This seems like a great opportunity for our dads who are interested, to get together and network. We are very fortunate that one of our dads, Andrew Kegele, has offered to co-ordinate and lead this initiative for us. Please contact Andrew as per the advice in the attached flyer if you are interested in attending the first meeting, which will be on Thursday May 17 th in the staffroom from 7-9pm. PIE Programs For more than ten years now, we have run PIE programs in conjunction with Camberwell South and Auburn South Primary Schools. PIE stands for Program for Individual Enrichment. The students who participate in the various programs, selected by the teachers, have generally shown an interest in the topic of the PIE. These programs target senior school students - Years 3 and 4 or Years 5 and 6. In each lesson there are about 6-7 students from Hartwell and the other two schools. To keep costs to a minimum the programs are conducted at one of our schools. In recent years the PIE programs have been organised for terms 2 and 3 to avoid the busy start and end of the year. For your interest, the next few PIE programs will cover topics such as Caricatures, Science (Genetics), Public Speaking, Kitchen Garden. For Your Diary The dates for the 2017 HART Art Show have been set. It will be held from Friday 31 August until Sunday 2 nd September. More details will follow, but please mark these dates in your diary. Principal-Parent Morning Tea- Prep Parents Last Friday Lisa and I held a morning tea for parents of current Prep students. It was well attended and provided us with an opportunity to show and discuss with parents the student report form that all Preps will receive towards the end of this term. We will repeat this session for Prep parents at 9.00am on Friday 19 May. Prep parents are encouraged to attend if they are unfamiliar with the student report forms and rating system. Year 4 Camp Congratulations to the Year 4 students who went to Phillip Island last week for their camp. The feedback from the teachers was that the students were well behaved and enthusiastic, despite the cold and at times wet weather. Thanks also to the teachers who went on the camp. Their care for the students, attention to detail and willingness to join in the activities with the children, was first class. Without such a professional and supportive group of teachers, camps such as this would not happen. Reminders School contributions can be settled any day at the school office. Thank you very much to all the families that have attended to this matter. School tours for prospective Prep students will be held each Tuesday morning at 9.30am. Please phone the office to arrange to join a tour. Notices Recently Sent Home House Cross Country Kris Moore Principal PE UPDATE Division Tennis Congratulations to Josh M (S6H) who played in the Boroondara Division Tennis Championships yesterday. Playing the best boys from all of the schools in Boroondara, the competition was of an excellent standard. Josh tells me he did his best and had a great experience playing against such talented opponents. He played some great tennis. Well done Josh. Year 6 Interschool Sport In perfect sunny conditions, our Year 6 Interschool Sport teams took on Camberwell South PS last Thursday. It was another round of terrific performances. Our Football team had a huge 64 point win. Well done to Lily G who kicked two goals and Siena M who knows how to tackle her opponent. It is great to see our girls are really taking the game on. Our Soccer team had another good win in a high scoring match, 6 goals to 4. Our softballers were also very impressive with both teams winning. The boys won 7 runs to 2 and the girls won 7 to 3. Each week their awareness and understanding of the game gets better and better. Our mixed netball team is on the board with a one goal win. Unfortunately, our girls team had another tough match, but certainly showed great strength of character. There are no matches this week due to Naplan testing, so we will train hard and keep developing our skills and match day strategies ready for next week. HPS House XC It is now another week closer to our Hartwell PS House Cross Country event! Students have been training hard in our PE lessons, where running has been the warm up focus. The event will be held on Wednesday 17 th May at Lynden Park. A notice was sent home last Thursday with all of the details. Students should dress in house colours, bring warm clothes, a drink bottle and a ground sheet if possible. Year 3-6 will head to the park just after 9am for a 9.30am start. Prep to Year 2 students will head to Lynden Park straight after recess. A map of the course is now on display in the gym for students to view. Running group sessions will continue this Wednesday 10 th May & Friday 12 th May. These sessions are open to all HPS students. Thanks to all of the wonderful parents who have been coming along, joining in and walking kids back to school with me. Please email me at bayes.joanne.l@edumail.vic.gov.au if you can assist with supervising around the course on XC day. Hoop Time Trials Year 3 & 4 students are in the midst of their Hoop Time Basketball trials. Hoop Time is an interschool basketball competition delivered by Basketball Victoria. Hartwell will enter teams in the three BV divisions: All Stars (Friday 2 rd June) and mixed teams of Future Stars and Rookies (Thursday 27 th July, Term 3). The boys trials began this morning. Their second trial will be held at lunchtime tomorrow (Wednesday 10 th May) rather than Thursday as initially published. The girls trials are on Tuesday 16 th May at 8am and on Thursday 18 th May at lunchtime. Players wishing to be selected in a team must attend at least one trial. However, it would be very helpful if players could attend both trials if possible. I have had meetings at school with all Year 3 & 4 students to ensure everyone is aware of the trials and all of the above information. Anyone who wants to trial has been given the opportunity. The teams will be finalised after the girls trials and permission notices will be sent home. Have a fantastic week. Jo Bayes PE & Sport Co-ordinator
