Board of Education Yadkin County Schools Yadkinville, NC A regular meeting of the Yadkin County Board of Education was held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 6:00p.m. at the Board of Education. Dr. Martin asked for nominations for the position of Board of Education Chairman. Tim Weatherman nominated Howard McKnight, seconded by Jennifer Hemric #18-071 On motion by Weatherman, seconded by Crews, the Board closed the Close Nominations: nominations for Chairman. #18-072 On motion by Hemric, seconded by Baity, the Board voted to accept the Board Chair nomination of Howard McKnight as Chairman of the Board of Education. The Board received a Courtney School update. Denny stated Courtney is 85-90% complete. He stated that the ceiling and beams are in and have been stained, and they look wonderful. He stated the HVAC System is going in this week and three-fourths of the gym floor is in today. Lastly he stated the Superintendent wants to turn building over to him at the end of August, and he is confident we will meet the mid October deadline.

6. The Board reviewed student releases. 7. The Board reviewed a Drug Testing Substance Abuse Proposal. Dr. Martin stated we discussed this at the last Board meeting. He stated that Kristi Gaddis has taken the lead if anyone has any questions. He stated this would be random drug testing for those participating in extracurricular activities, athletes and student drivers. He stated this type of testing has previously been done in Yadkin County Schools; however, it was cut due to funding. He state that if the Board is interested, we would contract with one of several companies who have submitted bids. He also stated the intent is not punitive, but intended to get kids help and the student names would be selected randomly. Dr. Martin stated we would have parent meetings regarding this with the middle and high schools. Dr. Martin asked if the Board wanted us to continue to go down this road and have conversations with parents. The Board stated they were in agreement to continue to look into this. 8. The Board reviewed upcoming Staff Development Webinars. Discussion Agenda 1. The Board reviewed the Open House Schedule and the August Schedule of Activities. 2. Dr. Martin stated he would like to congratulate the Board Members who were recently reelected. He stated he is fortunate to work in Yadkin County for the best Board in North Carolina. He stated he would also like to congratulate our student representatives and that he looks forward to working with them this year. He stated to the students that they will see and hear a lot and that they are here to provide a student perspective and he invited them to weigh in if they felt something needed to be addressed in our schools. Lastly, he stated he would like to say thank you to our school administrators as there had been a lot of changes and that everyone was working hard to gear up for the school year. 3. Tim Weatherman stated he would like to welcome the new student representatives to the Board. 4. Howard McKnight stated he would like to welcome the new student representatives to the Board and that he looked forward to hearing what they had to say. Lastly, he thanked everyone for being here.
