Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (MSEP) changed its name to Marine Science, Safety, & Environmental Protection (MSSEP) in Fall 2017. While students who were in the major prior to Fall 2017 were to continue under the old name designation, all degrees are reported here under the new naming convention for ease of tracking. Institutions are required to respond to a number of IPEDS surveys, including the Outcome Measures survey. The Outcomes Measures survey provides a more complete picture of student success than the IPEDS Graduation Rates surveys because it includes data on full-year entering student cohorts not just fall entering cohorts. Data is also broken down by full-time/part-time status and Pell Grant recipient status at entry. Percentages shown are based on adjusted counts of students who entered the institution during the indicated time period (full-year basis from July 1 to June 30th). As permissible by federal reporting standards for IPEDS, students who left MMA for any of the following reasons are excluded from rate calculations (i.e., "Cohort Less Exclusions"): 1) students who died or became permanently disabled; 2) students who left school to serve in the armed forces (or were called up to active duty); 3) students who left school to serve with a foreign aid service of the Federal Government; 4) students who left school to serve on an official church mission. OTHER MEASURES OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS Background: The mission of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is to provide a quality education for graduates serving in the merchant marine, the military services, and those who serve the interests of the Commonwealth, Nation and global marketplace. The Academy does so by combining a rigorous academic program with a regimented lifestyle that instills honor, responsibility, discipline, and leadership (Approved by the MMA Board of Trustees, September 2013). In keeping with the Academy's mission, in addition to retention and graduation rates, additional indicators of student achievement and success are tracked. These indicators pertain to student learning outcomes, student career outcomes, and the student experience. Retention & Graduation Rates Student Experience Outcomes Student Achievement & Success Indicators Student Learning Outcomes Student Career Outcomes The Academy has established sixteen specific Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs) for undergraduate education. The undergraduate learning outcomes (LOs) were revised during spring 2016 and became effective as of June 22, 2016. They are derived from the Academy's five core competencies, which reflect essential skills and abilities for all students who graduate from the Academy. More detailed information on the indicators included in this report can generally be found on the MMA Institutional Effectiveness website (https://www.maritime.edu/institutional-effectiveness).
