Cherokee Trail High School Pathways to Rigor

Before we start... Counselors are available in the cafeteria to answer specific questions If you have IB-specific questions, please talk to a counselor or call (720) 886-2040 Our website is a great resource...

The Importance of Rigor: Avoid College Remediation College professors estimate that 42% of public school graduates are not adequately prepared for college because they were not adequately exposed to rigor in high school. [Rigorous] tasks often include drawing inferences, interpreting results, analyzing conflicting sources of information, supporting arguments with evidence, and thinking deeply about material. Among students who attended postsecondary institutions, 58% of non-remediated students obtained a bachelor s degree, compared to between 17% and 37% of remediated students. The Development of an Index of Academic Rigor for College Readiness, The College Board

So...

College Readiness Identified Academic knowledge and skills evidenced by successful completion of a rigorous high school curriculum Success in college-prep and college-level courses taken in high school that require in-depth subject-area knowledge, higher order thinking skills, and strong study and research skills. Advanced academic skills, such as reasoning, problem solving, analysis, and writing abilities College planning skills, as demonstrated by understanding of college and career options and the college admissions and financing process College Board 2007

College and Career Ready?

Concurrent Enrollment Partnership between community colleges and high schools. Credit for high school and college concurrently. No cost. Transferring credit is possible. Credit not contingent upon a test. You can register now through CCA.

Advanced Placement Externally assessed. Score scale of 1-5, with a 3 being passing, though some schools offer credit only to 4-5. Courses prepare students for exam, but credit is dependent solely on the exam in May of school year. Students may choose to participate in Capstone Program

AP Capstone Students take and pass AP Seminar as Juniors and AP Research as Seniors. Seminar: Emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, research, argumentation, collaboration and communication. Research: Design, plan, conduct, defend 5000 word research paper. Students take and pass at least 4 additional AP classes/exams.

International Baccalaureate Externally and internally assessed. Score scale of 1-7 with a 4 being passing. Some schools favor Higher Level classes. Scores are averaged to determine IB Diploma, though credit is determined by passed courses. Students become Anticipated IB Candidates at the start of 11th grade

International Baccalaureate Emphasis on critical thinking/reasoning Emphasis on writing Emphasis on academic and personal roundedness and mindful citizenship Theory of Knowledge: How do we know what we know? CAS (Creativity, Action, Service)
