National symposium on Horizons of light in molecules, materials and daily life December 18-19, 2015 Department of Chemistry (School of Chemical Sciences & Technology) Dr. H. S. Gour Central University, Sagar, MP 470003, India. Endorsement: The International Year of Light and Light- Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative that speaks to many diverse segments of science, culture and society and forms bridges between them. A number of major international Organizations, Commissions and Unions have endorsed the Year and its goals, including the promotion of optical technologies in solving some of society s most pressing problems from medicine to energy-- as well as bringing awareness of how light can promote positive aspects of the human condition, through philosophy, art, design, etc. WELCOME TO NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HORIZONS OF LIGHT IN MOLECULES, MATERIALS AND DAILY LIFE Scope of the Symposium Science Philosophy Arts Culture Objectives The international year of light - 2015 is a global initiative that will highlight to citizen of the world with importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their future and for the development of society. It will consist of coordinated activities on national, regional and international level. Detailed background of the proposed Symposium. (i) Problems, relevance and priority for the region. Light plays a significant role in human activities. Right from the natural photosynthesis it has revolutionized society through medicine, communications, entertainment and culture. Light based technologies directly respond to the needs of humankind. Light
endorses all the living beings however awareness about its functionality towards science, engineering and society is very less in the mentioned areas. Sagar is a remote and tribal area of Madhya Pradesh state and needs significant attention of the people of this region towards horizons of light in their lives. The young brains studying in the institutions situated in this region require some activities through which they could understand the fundamentals and future aspects of light in chemical science, physical science, engineering, environmental science, and social sciences. (ii) Background and document Survey. International year of light project includes over 100 partners from over 85 countries including scientific societies, museums, universities and other organizations. It has received endorsement from International Council of Science (ICSU) and unions representing many different branches of science: IUCS (Chemical Science), IUPAP (Pure and Applied Physics), IUPAB (Pure and Applied Biophysics), IUTAM (Theoretical and Applied Mechanics), IUHPS (History and philosophy of Science), IUA (Astronomy), IURS (Radio Science) etc. The society partners have extensive data and track record in international outreach. UNESCO has accompanied this project to solve and remove this problem since 2005. (iii) Resources. As organizing institution is newly upgraded central university, internal resources are not up to the mark. However, recently some optical instruments have been installed and right now functioning well that will help to the students to learn the advancements of light pertaining to the symposium subject. Organizing committee has been looking for outer resources (resource persons) to come and deliver pertinent lectures. In addition, basic facilities are available to organize a symposium with ~300 participants. (v) The areas/topics proposed to be covered at the Symposium and mission. In general, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences and common human being will be beneficiary of this symposium. (vi) Significance of the symposium towards societal development. This symposium will i) improve public understandings on how light touches their daily lives, ii) build worldwide education capacity, iii) enhance international cooperation and, iv) focus on popular discoveries of nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most of the part of Madhya Pradesh (MP) is tribal and backward in terms of the awareness specially how to utilize the large amount of natural energy resource i. e. sunlight. As well, light based technologies (optical instruments) are far approachable to most of these MP people and students. Undoubtedly, this event will motivate to the young brains as well as social workers to relay the knowledge gained through this event to the society and to other students.
