School Development Variation Days The last day of this school year for students will be on Wednesday 19 th December. Teachers are required to attend on Thursday 20 th and Friday 21 st December. In order to maximise the benefits of professional learning sessions that our staff are participating in this year, teachers will be completing four sets of three hour sessions throughout the year so that they can implement ideas with their class, reflect and evaluate in lieu of attending the last two days. There is a strong focus on teaching numeracy, formative assessment, critical and creative thinking and catering for identified needs of students. School Uniform Thank you to our families for their ongoing support of their children wearing full school uniform on a daily basis. Students are required to wear the summer uniform in Terms 1 and 4 and the winter uniform in Terms 2 and 3. Order forms were sent home with each family this week. Fitness Fun Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 4 students for their tremendous efforts in their fitness sessions three times a week. They are keeping fit, healthy and having fun! Community Support Well done to members of the Student Representative Council for organising the World s Greatest Shave at Burraneer Bay. Thank you to all students who brought in a donation. Funds raised for the charity at present is $740. Special thanks to Mrs. Gaffney and Miss Warren for the outstanding job they are doing leading the SRC this year. You can t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. Maya Angelou 1928-2014, Poet and Author Warmest Regards, Ms.V.Pantelis Page 2

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL S REPORT The 2018 Grade Excursion Levies were sent home today in response to parent requests for upfront details of student excursion expenses. The Grade Excursion Levies can be paid as a lump sum or in three instalments. The staff have planned some exciting excursions for the students this year. Excursions and incursions provide valuable hands on learning experiences for all students and encourage social interaction. Grade Excursion Levies are to be paid in full by June 15 th, 2018. Harmony Day at Burraneer Bay Harmony Day celebrates Australia s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Harmony Day is recognized nationally on Wednesday 21st March. The colour of Harmony Day is orange. We ask that on Wednesday March 21, Burraneer Bay students wear a touch of orange to school to recognise this special day.it could be an orange t-shirt, orange socks or orange ribbons. As a token of their support, the canteen will be giving all students a piece of orange to enjoy for Crunch and Sip For more information about Harmony Day, visit www.harmonyday.gov.au 2019 High School Applications for Year 6 Students All High School Expression of Interest forms need to be returned to our school office no later than Friday 16 March to ensure the school has enough time to process them, before they are submitted to the high schools. We ask that you complete the forms as early as possible so that we are able to contact you if there are any omissions or errors. ON LINE PAYMENT SYSTEM As you are aware, we are introducing a new financial tool which will allow families to view and pay their accounts online. This program is called School Bytes. Your payments are safe and secure and there are no fees incurred by parents. To allow this system to work efficiently, we need to have updated emails. We ask that all families who have changed their details notify the office. If you have not returned your 2018 Update of Information, please complete the copy in this newsletter and return to the office as soon as possible. World s Greatest Shave at Burraneer Bay Thank you to the parents who responded to our pleas for hairdressers. We really appreciated the community support. We had our very own World s Greatest Shave today and 11 students from Year 6 and 2 staff members nominated to have their head shaved. It was encouraging to see all of our students participating in Burraneer Bay s Greatest Shave and fundraising for a very worthy cause. It was wonderful to see the students and teachers wearing their hair in a crazy hairstyle or coming to school with their hair coloured. Thank you for your gold coin donations. Page 3

High School for a Day Woolooware High School On Tuesday 13 th March, Year 6 students spent a day at Woolooware High School and were given a taste of what they can expect next year. They had to negotiate a timetable, find their way to classrooms and experience high school style lessons with a different teacher for each. Each group had four lessons (periods) which may have included either English, Maths, Science, PE, Health, Art, Drama, Home Economics or Woodwork. The boys and girls were very positive and the day was a huge success. CANTEEN NEWS: FRIDAY VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY REQUIRED Dear Parents, The canteen is experiencing a shortage of volunteers on Fridays. If you (or someone in your family) could assist for either the 9-11am shift or for an hour and a half between 12:30 and 2:00pm (when you get to see your kids) we would greatly appreciate it. Please see Catherine or Lauren in the canteen if you are able to help. Thank you. Page 5

K-2 Eggshibition and Assembly The K-2 Easter Assembly will be on Thursday, 29 th March, 2018 at 9:20 am. After the assembly, the K-2 Eggshibition will be set up under the Infants C.O.L.A. Please do not send your child s eggshibition in before Thursday, 29 th March. We have nowhere to store it and we would hate for it to get damaged. We ask that on the day of the Eggshibition you bring the exhibit to your child s classroom. The Coles Sports for Schools Program is here! Collect your Coles vouchers and return them to the box in the office foyer or pop them in the box in-store at Caringbah Coles. To date we have collected over 2000 vouchers from our BBPS community! The more vouchers we collect, the more sporting equipment our school will receive! The program runs from now until May 2018. Page 6
