PRINCIPAL S REPORT What a busy week we have had here at Walters Road PS. It was so nice to see the sun shining last Friday as the children made their way to PSSA sports. It seems like a long time since we have been able to play sport on a regular basis. Congratulations must go to our Zone Cross Country runners. Students ran many kilometers around Patterson Reserve and as always represented themselves, their families and the school with great pride. Thank you also to the many families who helped with transporting students to and from the venue. Continuing on the note of representation, Year 5 students visited Evans High School last week and once again, Mrs Pretlove and her staff were amazed at the engagement, fantastic behaviours and mathematical understanding that the students displayed. Well done Year 5 and thank you Evans High School for the invitation. The local community must be seeing the great work we do here at Walters Road to as our school enrolments continue to increase. We now have 595 students enrolled at our school. Families across the school will see high student numbers in some classes. In order to combat these larger classes we are now eligible for a new class to be formed according to Dept. Of Education formulas. Working with the executive team a plan will be formulated and implemented at the start of Term 3. Any changes to classes will be communicated prior to this time and we will aim for minimal disruption to classes. Last but most definitely not least, a BIG thank you to Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Higgins whom have both done amazing jobs in their roles as R/ Deputy Principal and R/ Assistant Principal for the past few weeks. Both women are amazing classroom practitioners and school administrators. The students, staff and community truly see the difference you make each day. Some notes for parents -: 1. Next week building works will begin on Walters Road entry driveway. In order to protect students and keep them safe we have chosen to install a fence on both sides of the driveway. This action has become necessary as many adults and older siblings continue to use the driveway as a footpath. Many adults are failing to understand that cars entering and exiting the school use the driveway. Whilst this fence is being erected, we ask that you use caution in mornings and afternoons. 2. As the number of parents assisting in classrooms, breakfast clubs and P&C steadily, increases I would like to draw your attention to the need to apply for your Working With Children s Check. A Working With Children Check is a requirement for people who work or volunteer in child-related work. It involves a national criminal history check and a review of findings of workplace misconduct. WWCC numbers are needed if you are volunteering in and around the school and when you are transporting children (other than your own) to and from events. Please visit http://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au for more information. 3. Parent/ Teacher Interviews will take place in Week 10 this term. Please save the dates. Monday 26 th June Kindergarten interviews, Tuesday 27 th June Year 1 and 2 interviews Wednesday 28 th June- Year 3 and 4 interviews and Thursday 29 th June Year 5 and 6 interviews. Bookings will be made online this year and further information will follow. Staffing news Whilst Mr Plumb is on leave, Mr Brett Thorpe will be teaching 5P for the remainder of the term. Welcome Mr Thorpe. We also welcome our new Relieving Deputy Principal Mr Matthew Carter to our school from Thursday 1 st June until the end of the school year. I hope you can welcome him into our school community. I will let Mr Carter introduce himself Mrs Jodi Warner Principal I am really excited to have the opportunity to work at Walters Road Public School. During 14 years in education, I have worked in a number of primary schools throughout Western Sydney. Over half of that time has been in leadership roles, including working as a teaching principal. On a personal note, I am married with two children. My eldest child is in primary school, my youngest is in preschool and my wife is also a teacher. It may take me a little while to remember names, but I never forget a face, so make sure you take the chance to stop me and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting the wonderful students, parents and staff at Walters Road Public School over the next few weeks. Mr Matt Carter Relieving Deputy Principal

Changes to the daily collection of your children As the school office is at its busiest between 8.30am to 9.30am and 3.00pm to 3.30pm, we would like to encourage parents/carer to make plans prior to school in regard to changes in pick-up arrangements. We understand that emergency situations do arise where you need to deter from your usual collection arrangements and we will assist you as much as we can in relaying this information to your child but it would be more beneficial if you could send a note with your child for the class teacher so that they are directly aware of any changes and can ensure that your child remembers what they need to do or where they need to go. Staff Car Park Just a reminder that our school car park is NOT to be used for parents dropping off/picking up children from OOSH or school. We thank you for your understanding in this matter. OC Applications This term, we had 14 students from Year 4 submit applications for placement in an Opportunity Class in 2018. The Department s High Performing Students Unit will review applications and inform parents of the testing locations in early to mid July, before the test takes place on 26 th July. We wish all of these students the best of luck. Mr D. McNamara Relieving Assistant Principal Stage 2 Blacktown PSSA Zone Cross Country On Tuesday, 23 rd May, a group of 27 students represented Walters Road Public School at the Zone Cross Country Carnival. The sun was shining as we arrived at the venue. I would like to extend my thanks to the wonderful parents, carers, relatives and teachers who assisted in transporting our competitors to the park. The students were excited as they walked the course in preparation for the race. The route was quite hilly and challenging, never the less, all of our representatives worked very hard and gave their best effort. We are very proud of their achievements. Four students, Mudathir, Mustafa, Devinas and Neesha have qualified for the Regional Cross Country on Wednesday 14 th June. A further 3 students are reserves. Well done everybody! Mrs C. Lebens & Mrs M. Cook

P & C News We are very happy to say that the Library has the new blinds up and they look awesome. This was made possible from the fundraising 5 cent drive last year. Students and Mrs Higgins are impressed with the new blinds and new look of the library Here are some pictures from Muffins for Mum which was on the 12 th of May 2017. The P&C would like to introduce School Shades Sunglasses into our school. Let s protect the eye health of our students. The students should have a note with information about School Shades and an order form. The order form is due back on the 8 th of June 2017. Students are giving School Shades Sunglasses a thumb up of approval Please note that we will be having our first night P&C meeting for this year on the Wednesday 7 th June 2017 in the staffroom at 6pm.
