MATER DEI PARENT NEWSLETTER January 2019 January 2019 MATER DEI MISSION STATEMENT Mater Dei, a Catholic, diocesan regional high school nurtures the spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional, and social growth of young men and women. In a caring environment, respectful of individual differences, her comprehensive program educates, fosters faith, and develops gospel values. THOUGHTS FROM THE PRINCIPAL Happy New Year wishes from Mater Dei! I trust that each of you enjoyed a peaceful and holy Christmas season and are now filled with a renewed spirit for 2019! As we begin the new year at Mater Dei, our senior students are sharing their spirit with others through their service projects. It is our belief that this experience allows our young people to develop self-confidence, to become aware of the needs of others, and to recognize the many ways they can serve others. When asked what the face of Jesus looks like, Mother Teresa responded by saying that Jesus is in every person who seeks help from his/her fellow man. Please join us in praying that our seniors experience the face and the hand of Jesus throughout their service work. Let us also pray for a successful, spirit-filled second semester! We encourage you to utilize PlusPortals in order to review your child s schedule and to remain updated on his/her academic, attendance, and discipline reports. We are confident that with your continued involvement and encouragement, your child will achieve his/her best! Finally, as we look forward to the joys of 2019, let us continue to pray for families who faced serious challenges or experienced the loss of a loved one in 2018. As always, we at Mater Dei are here to serve and to support your family. Thus, please contact us should you need assistance. May the Lord bless your family throughout 2019! ILLINOIS TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR The Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program was established in education reform bill SB 1947, which was signed August 31, 2017. WHO IS ELIGIBLE Students, including current 8 th graders, from a household with income below 300% of the federal poverty level. (example: $73,800 for a family of four) WHERE TO APPLY Information is available at www.empowerillinois.org. The Students menu includes the following pages: Do I Qualify, How Do I Apply, and How Does It Work. WHEN TO APPLY Per the website, the application opens January 15, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. APPLYING EARLY IS IMPORTANT CONTACT FOR QUESTIONS Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Dennis Litteken with questions. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AS PARENT AMBASSADORS Recognizing that the unique story of Mater Dei is most powerful when told by our families, we developed a Parent Ambassadors program in 2016 to assist us with sharing our story with prospective families. At this time, we are offering the opportunity for additional parents to join this program. ROLE As a Parent Ambassador, you will serve as a contact for and/or directly contact prospective families from your community (as well as surrounding communities, if you choose). Through these contacts, you will provide the different and valuable parent perspective. Know that this role does NOT require an extensive amount of time. TRAINING To gain the knowledge required for this role, volunteers must attend one training session from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17 or Tuesday, January 22. RSVP To volunteer as a parent ambassador, contact Mrs. Maria Zurliene to provide the date(s) of the training sessions you are able to attend (mzurliene@materdeiknights.org). (If all volunteers are able to attend the same session, only one session will be held.) THANK YOU for taking the time to consider volunteering for this important role! As always, your dedication to Mater Dei is greatly appreciated!

SERVING TO LEARN...... LEARNING TO SERVE On Monday, January 7, our seniors began responding to the needs of others in a variety of environments, including day care centers, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, civil agencies, and social agencies, in a variety of locations, including Clinton County, the metro-east area, and St. Louis. Thus, the benefits of their service are wide spread! We thank coordinator Campus Minister Ms. Colleen McDermott, who will visit each site in order to speak with both our students and the site supervisors, and those faculty members who have volunteered to mentor seniors during their service experience. The Mater Dei community will enjoy a video collage of photos from all the sites during Catholic Schools Week. Finally, please pray that this experience is an opportunity for our seniors to both serve to learn and learn to serve. AMAZING HELPING HANDS Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is pleased to announce that during the second quarter, our students, faculty, and staff donated a total of $7,326.50 to our weekly collections for class missions and special causes. Additionally, they donated $675 for the jeans day our FBLA hosted in November for the benefit of Community Link s First Step program, as well as 135 items to the toy and winter clothing collection our St. Vincent de Paul Society hosted in December. Thus, a grand total of $14,087.89 has been raised during the first semester! Please join us in thanking the members of our Mater Dei family for living the Gospel through their commitment to helping those in need. Their generosity is truly exceptional!
