Volume 64 Edition 5 Riverside-San Bernardino Counties The Inland Orchid News. Inside this edition: Guest Speaker Meetings are held at the Colton Community Center Second Thursday of each month Show-N-Tell @ 7:15 pm Meeting @ 7:30 pm Society Officers Culture Notes Roster Changes FYI Coming Events Refreshment Sign-up Other News Regular meetings are held on the 2 nd Thursday of the month. Regular meetings include: Plant Judging 7:15pm Meeting 7:30pm Speaker 7:45pm Refreshments & Judging Results 8:45pm Raffle 9:00pm We are pleased to have as our speaker for the night, Mr. Norman Fang of Norman s Orchids. Even before 1988, when he received his degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, Norman Fang was already immersed in orchids. While still a student, he managed the Raymond Burr Orchid Collection on campus. Two scholarships to study plant tissue culture also allowed him to study under Dr. Murashige at the University of California and Dr. Tanabe at the University of Hawaii. In 1986, he started his renowned nursery, Norman s Orchids, based in both California and Taiwan. His parents, brother and sister soon joined him in the company as it grew, and he wisely was the first to secure the domain name of www.orchids.com. Exhibiting at shows across the US, he has received more than 400 AOS flower quality awards and 20 AOS Show Trophies. In addition, he was honored in 2005 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Agriculture at Cal Poly in Pomona. As the second youngest judge to become fully accredited, Norman has traveled around the world to judge orchid shows, from Asia to South Africa, from Canada to South America. In 1996, with Paul Bechtel, he initiated AOS Judging at the Taiwan International Orchid Show and since then has served as the AOS Judging Coordinator for the show. He has also long served as the AOS Representative for the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association. As a result of these relationships, he has been instrumental in bridging the license agreement with TOGA and the Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society to include their award records in Orchids Plus. As a former Vice President of the American Orchid Society and having also chaired their Development Committee, he is currently serving on their Public Relations Committee. In addition to these AOS volunteer activities, he s a Founding Member and Regional Director of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, currently celebrating its 25 th year! As an active member of several affiliated societies, Norman is a sought-after guest speaker for society meetings, shows and conferences. He generously supports Judging Centers, societies and the AOS with generous financial, scholarship and plant donations.

RSBCOS P.O. Box 10423 San Bernardino, CA 92423 May 2018 Newsletter Our society still has funds to give Meetings are held at Colton Community Center 660 Colton Ave. Colton, CA 92324 First, the fundraising results: In a word, Amazing From all donations and membership renewals you donated $86,221. That is a sum unmatched in our history. Additionally, through profits from our Orchids in the Wild trips, you donated $15,954. Total = $102,175. An historic first! Well done everyone. To that total the OCA board voted to add $9167 from funds on hand, but of course these ultimately came from you also, and sent $111, 342 to Rainforest Trust to be matched dollar for dollar for Fundación EcoMinga to purchase land for the Dracula Reserve. Thus, by your generosity, Fundación EcoMinga received $222,684 to expand the Dracula Reserve. I hope you all take a lot of pleasure in having made it possible for that sum to go towards preserving the habitat sheltering Dracula orchids. About Our Society The Riverside-San Bernardino Counties Orchid Society (RSBCOS) was founded to further the understanding and appreciation of orchids by its members locally and to aid in a worldwide effort to improve man s knowledge of them.
