Prof. Debora Wenger submitted a proposal to the Best Practices in Journalism program to support our increased InSight program production on young voter coverage. I was consulted during this process during the planning stages of the proposal writing and logistical meetings on our production and coverage. VCU Center for Teaching Excellence Student Technology Experts Program. My proposal was for a student intern to instruct myself along Prof. Wenger and Prof. Paula Otto in web design and publishing. This was to help us maintain the website associated with VCU InSight. Our request was approved for Spring 2005. VCU Works. I submitted an application for two VCU Works student workers. VCU Works is a pilot program during the Spring 2005 semester that provides high-quality campus employment opportunities to undergraduate students and is designed to promote student retention and progress toward degree completion. My application was accepted, and I was able to hire one VCU Works student to help in our broadcast gear checkout room as an equipment monitor. Part of my duty in this program is to work as a mentor to the VCU Works student in my employment. TEACHING MCOM 151 Introduction to Mass Communication-Honors 3 credits. A comprehensive look at the mass media in the United States and the world. Includes discussions of newspapers, magazines, radio, television, books, movies, recordings, advertising and public relations. Also studies mass media rights and responsibilities, ethics and censorship. MCOM 710 Cross-Platform Storytelling 3 credits. In this course, students will explore several forms of professional journalistic and media writing. Students create a portfolio of writing samples.
MCOM 786 Conducting Professional Research 3 credits. In this course, students will learn the application of research methods commonly used in the media professions, including but not limited to surveys, elementary statistical procedures, focus groups and Media analytics. MCOM 760 Social Marketing for Health and Behavioral Change 3 credits. This course is designed to give students a thorough orientation to marketing for the public good and its application to a range of problems in health contexts. Students will acquire practical skills in the design, implementation, and evaluation of health intervention initiatives that use social marketing. Students acquire an understanding of basic rhetorical theory and its application in a variety of speech situations. Listening, speaking and critiquing abilities are emphasized. CBR 240 Survey of Electronic Media* Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. Explore the historical, cultural, technological, economic, and political forces that shape the United States system of electronic mass media. Consider how those media, in turn, influence the contemporary social landscape. Assess their potential and actual effects on the lives of individuals. * This class was taught at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan as an adjunct. MASC 681/TEDU 620 Video Applications in Instruction Semester course; Prerequisite: TEDU 556 and TEDU 610 Visual Literacy or permission of instructor. Emphasizes the design and instructional
strategies used with the production of video resources. Differentiates analog and digital video, importing images, video and sound, editing, previewing, transitions, filters, motion settings, superimposing, titles, special effect options, and exporting video. Students will produce and edit a personalized instructional module using digital video hardware and editing software. Course cross-listed with School of Mass Communications. MASC 466 TV Studio Production Semester course; 2 laboratory hours. 1 credit. Students may repeat the course for up to 3 credits. For mass communications majors only, or by permission of instructor. Instruction and practice in basic television studio production. This course supports the production of the television broadcast journalism programming created by students within the broadcast journalism concentration. * This course completed all the studio production for VCU InSight, our student produced news magazine show. MASC 465 Newscasting Semester course; 1 lecture and 4 laboratory hours. 3 credits. May be repeated once for a total of six credits. Prerequisites: MASC 363. Co requisite: MASC 466. For mass communications majors only. Concentrates on developing on-air skills in radio and television studio and field situations. Emphasizes journalistic principles in delivery of news, public affairs, editorial and interviews. Grammar, diction and broadcast writing are stressed. * This was the content course for VCU InSight, our student produced news magazine show. MASC 461 The Documentary Semester course; 2 lecture and 2 laboratory hours. 3 credits. Prerequisites: MASC 363, MASC 365 and MASC 366, or permission of instructor. MASC 464 may be taken concurrently with the instructor's permission. For mass communications majors only. An examination of documentary concepts through analysis of radio, television and film documentaries. The course will center on the development, writing and
production of a documentary in the medium (audio or video) of the student's choice. MASC 415 Video Journalism II Semester course; 3 laboratory hours. 1 credit. Prerequisite: MASC 366. Co requisite: MASC 464 or permission of instructor. For mass communications majors only. Students learn advanced field shooting and editing techniques as well as the inner workings of the television studio including studio camera operation, advanced audio and video editing, visual storytelling and advanced camera techniques. * This class worked with a third level electronic media writing class with a focus on more complicated electronic news gathering production. Students were required to complete a video essay as a final project. MASC 366 Video Journalism I Semester course; 3 laboratory hours. 1 credit. Prerequisites: MASC 101 and MASC 203. For mass communications majors only. Students will learn the purpose, function and execution of basic techniques of television and video field production, including non-linear editing. The course also covers studio operations as they relate to broadcast news. Emphasis will be placed on the production of broadcast-quality news video. * This class worked with a first level electronic media writing class to give the students the basics of electronic newsgathering production so they can complete a news package. MASC 362 Photojournalism Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. For mass communications majors only, or by permission of instructor. Examine theoretical, technical, and practical use of photography in communications and reporting along with theories and legal guidelines of photojournalism. Training in news photography and its application in converged media. MASC 290 Ethical Problems in Mass Media Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. Prerequisite: MASC 101 or permission of school. Examination and analysis of contemporary issues
and problems in conventional and new media. The philosophical foundation and principles of ethical decision making are explored. Critical and unresolved issues are discussed within the legal and ethical framework of modern mass media practice. Students are required to design and justify resolutions to the issues and present defenses for the resolution proposals. MASC 101 Introduction to Mass Communications (Lab) Semester course; 2 lecture and 2 laboratory hours. 3 credits. A broad survey of mass media, with emphasis on new media, global media and the business of media as traditional lines blur among journalism, advertising and public relations. PBS at the Capitol internship development I worked with the Community Idea Stations to develop a paid internship for broadcast journalism students during the Virginia General Assembly in Spring 2005. Four students work on the production crew at the PBS studio located in the state capitol producing shows during the general assembly. Inter-departmental service I worked with Prof. Michelle Peace and her Forensic Sciences class on crime scene exercises in Spring 2004. Students in that course investigated a mock crime scene, while
students in the School of Mass Communications used the experience to learn how to cover a crime scene. I worked with the VCU Department of Teaching and Learning to develop a teaching plan for a new course, TEDU 620 Video Applications in Instruction. This is now part of the College of Education post baccalaureate certificate in K-12 instructional technology, but taught in the School of Mass Communications. The goal was to teach educators on how to shoot and edit basic video to be used in their instruction. I taught sections of this course during Summer 2005 and 2006. Media Trainer, Richmond Times- Dispatch. I conducted a training seminar for still photojournalist at the Richmond Times-Dispatch on how to do basic videography and editing for web content. (Spring 2006) Videographer, Editor, Radio Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF) fundraising project. Worked with Prof. Debora Wenger on a fundraising video to seek donations for RTNDF Educator in the Newsroom Project. (2006) Videographer, Editor, "Advanced Broadcast Journalism in a Multimedia World, a CD- ROM video. This CD-ROM is to accompany a proposed media convergence textbook of the same name by Prof. Debora Wenger and Deborah Potter. I traveled to Roanoke, VA with Prof. Wenger and spent a day at WSLS, a Media General television station, interviewing and gathering video for the project. We also visited The News & Advance newspaper in Lynchburg, VA as part of the project. Videographer, Studio Director, Communications Workshops. I also assisted Prof. Otto as needed with her communications workshops geared to executives, managers and department heads in businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies. I gather field interviews and set up studio interviews to give the workshop attendees the experience of being on broadcast television. The groups we worked with include the Virginia Lottery, Virginia Economic Development Partnership, and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). This was part of The VCU School of Mass Communications partnership with Lauron Associates. Consultant, Earth Action Day, a 10-minute video produced under contract for the Hampton Roads Sanitation District. Two senior-level students and Prof. Paula Otto shot edited and produced the video, which is being shown to community groups
throughout the Hampton Roads area. I consulted those involved on non-linear editing techniques and production. (April-August 2004). Consultant, Social Work Advocacy: State Budget, 20-minute video; Fifth in a series of Policy Affects Practice videos produced by the School in conjunction with Dr. Robert Schneider in the VCU School of Social Work. Two senior-level students assisted Prof. Paula Otto in shooting and editing this video. The video was distributed to more than 1,000 schools of social work across the country. I consulted those involved on non-linear editing techniques and production. (Distribution began in January 2005). Videographer, Editor, Know Your Rights, a 30-second public service announcement produced for the Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy. I shot and edited the PSA, which Prof. Paula Otto produced. The PSA aired more than a dozen times in paid spots for several weeks in June 2004 on WWBT-TV in Richmond, VA. The PSA was additionally distributed to Richmond-area television stations for free air time. Videographer, Editor, Water Sampling Instructional Video Prof. Paula Otto and I wrote, shoot and produce a 30-minute instructional video for the Department of Environmental Quality (Summer 2005). Held tours of our broadcast studio as well as a demonstration of professional broadcast video equipment to the Boy Scout Troup from Goochland County, Virginia on January 24, 2005. The scouts had the opportunity to sit on our set and read a script off the teleprompter. I recorded the session and make a copy for the troupe to show at their next meeting.
