Thoughts from the Desktop Dear Parents, This week I have joined our year 7s for the last day of their camp at beautiful Magnetic Island. The children have had a fantastic time in what is a truly beautiful location. How fortunate our students are to have such dedicated staff planning these types of experiences for the children. It has been a very memorable time and a terrific way to end their year. The year 6s head off this Sunday and I am certain that their time here will be just as enjoyable. A very special thank you to our parent volunteers who have given their time so willingly to be a part of our school camps. These events would not be possible without your support. Last Saturday St Joseph's hosted the regional Opti-Mminds challenge. It was a great day with many teams from around the region competing. All teams competed well and gave it their best. Congratulations to St Joseph's team one who took out the Language and Literature Division and are eligible to compete at the state finals later this year. We wish them all the very best. As the term marches on and the weather begins to warm up there is a fast growing pile of lost jumpers in lost property. They are not a cheap item to replace so if your child is missing a jumper please encourage them to check for these at school. Have a great week. Timothy Ham It is tradition that past students and staff can have a plaque put on the wall in the breezeway. If you are interested in purchasing a plaque, please leave your details (name and year you started at St. Joseph s) along with $6 per plaque at the school office. Principal

APRE issue # term # Multicultural Festival Friday 5th September is the date for our annual Multicultural Festival which is being held at the Parish. This year we are celebrating the culture of New Zealand. Our Year 7 students will be helping out on the night and our choirs will be also singing the New Zealand and the Australian national anthems. It would be great to see our St. Joseph s community supporting this annual event. Next Friday is also School Officers Day. Our School Officers are a great support to our teachers and to our students and this is a day to thank them for the hard work they do in the classroom and behind the scenes. God Bless Claudine Dank FAMILY MOMENT his role or roles. H can be the person he is. Last weekend was rather busy for the Alexander family. The boys attended a specialised coaching clinic for BMX on the weekend and there was a BBQ on Saturday night for all the families involved in the BMX club. We had a great time with family and friends enjoying some home made goodies and a BBQ. This weekend is filled with sport again but will be exciting as exciting as Jarred is returning from Year 7 camp. No doubt he ll be tired but we re looking forward to seeing him and hearing all about his trip. Mrs Nicole Alexander Prep Green Curriculum @ Joey s Opti-Minds Last Saturday St. Joseph s was host to the Regional Opti-Minds Challenge. A number of teams from the school around town and also from Cloncurry came to battle it out in the Language and Literature, Social Sciences or Science and Engineering Divisions. All of the teams have been preparing for the last 6 weeks and it all came together on Saturday. Congratulations to the St. Joseph s teams. You all prepared well and performed well on the day. Our Language and Literature Team 1 were winners in their division and now have the opportunity to head to Brisbane to compete in the State Finals on the weekend of the 11th and 12th October. This is an awesome opportunity and one the team is very much looking forward to. NAPLAN Naplan results have been returned with very impressive results. Naplan results for individual students will be sent home within the next fortnight. PRAC STUDENT Welcome to Shannon Sweeney who is completing her prac in PE this week and next with Mr McLauchlan. Have a wonderful weekend Claudine Dank

Music Notes Wow, what a busy time we are having in the music room! OPERA - This week classes have been learning about large instruments making low sounds and small instruments making high sounds as well as how music in operas change suddenly to reflect what is happening in the story. Our older students have been learning about the differences between operas and musicals, what the first opera ever written was and the roles of composers and librettists! issue # term # We have had an overwhelming response to students wanting to come to the Mount Isa Mines School Opera Show. Next Thursday, all choir and instrumental students will be travelling to the Civic Centre to watch the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and singers from Opera Queensland perform a show for our students. It is going to be amazing! CHOIR - All choir students should have received a permission note about performing at the Multicultural Festival next Friday. If they haven't received one, they are available from the office. We are meeting at 6:45pmbetween father Mick's house and the church. We will be performing at 7pm then once we have finished, students will be walked back to the same place. Please be aware the students MUST be picked up by a parent and have their names ticked off my list before I allow them to go. This is for safety reasons. INSTRUMENTAL - All students are gearing up for 2 special concerts in Term 4. The first is the Mt Isa District Instrumental Gala, where all instrumental and choir students will be participating in a concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and other Mt Isa ensembles. Our other concert is our school instrumental concert. Students will be performing solos, duets, small ensembles and finishing with the St Joseph's band. The date for this event is TBA. LA BOHEME - Next week, Sebastian Lehtonen, Ashleigh Stallmann, Mr Khovy Inthavong, Mrs Kaye Stallmann and myself will be performing on stage with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and cast of Opera Queensland in Pucchini's La Boheme. If you have never watched live opera before, I encourage this to be your first. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry. Please come and support our talented students and staff members. Tickets available at Outback at Isa. There will be no Instrumental on Thursday and Friday next week. Friday instrumental students have their final catch up on Monday September 8th. Hope to see you all at the opera!! Alicia Freeman Music and Instrumental Teacher

issue # term # LIBRARY MATTERS In recent weeks, Year 4 and 5 students have been learning how to search for fiction books on Destiny, the library operating system. As this is a cloud-based system, anyone can search our catalogue from anywhere with internet access. The home page tells you which are the most frequently borrowed items in the library, and lists recent additions to the collection. There is a search function at the top of the page, and students can search for books by title, author or subject. The shelf browse option is an amazing piece of technology, and very popular with students and staff. To visit the site, click on this link Destiny or go to library.tsv.catholic.edu.au and select St Joseph s Mount Isa from the Western Schools tab. New Books Below are some of the resources purchased recently. You can go to the Destiny site for more information, or the check if they are still available. Yours in reading, Kim Higgs Teacher - Li-
