HOLY CROSS NEWSLETTER TERM 2 - WEEK 8-1ST JUNE, 2016 NEXT WEEK... MON 6TH JUNE Dear Parents, Learning and Teaching at Holy Cross Update Many of you are aware that Holy Cross is currently involved in a three year project sponsored by Catholic Education Melbourne, around Visible Learning. The project is based on the work of Professor John Hattie and his colleague Deb Masters. Deb has visited our school as a part of the project team. We have been heavily involved for 18 months now, attending professional learning, making changes in our classroom practice and sharing our practices across year levels. The project makes us very accountable in regard to data we collect and providing evidence of growth and change in our school. We have learnt a lot about what really works to improve student out comes based on the meta research done by Professor Hattie across thousands of schools. The reason I mention this to you again is because the ABC is currently running a four part series called Revolution School. It is a school in Melbourne which was very poorly achieving and through the work of Professor Hattie and others, has made significant gains. I m not suggesting Holy Cross was in any way in this situation, but rather the work of Professor Hattie is highly regarded and based on very sound research. It is called Visible Learning. It encourages teachers to be very articulate about the purpose of what children are learning and that students can begin to also articulate that from as early as Year Prep. It also asks teachers to be clear about what success in a particular area might look like, how students can judge if they are achieving and getting students to set their own goals around their learning. It is not about letting children choose what they learn, but rather students understanding what the purpose of a particular lesson, or lessons is and how they know they are successful. Individual goal setting is a key part of this process. The terms we are using at Holy Cross are Learning Intentions and Success Criteria If you are interested you can Google John Hattie and also the ABC program. Confirmation This week the Year 6 students led us through a beautiful Community Prayer based on Confirmation. Please keep these candidates in your prayers. INTERSCHOOL SOCCER On Tuesday, 30th May, 15 Grade 5/6 students participated in the Interschool Soccer Tournament at Dixon Field. The day consisted of playing games against New Gisborne, Mt Macedon and Macedon. Over the 3 games the team showed much improvement in their skill level and in their team work. We created some great chances on goal, but were unable to score any of these chances. I was proud of the way the team encouraged each other and showed sportsmanship in defeat. A big congratulations to all who participated on your efforts throughout the day and thank you to the parents who were able to come and support the team.
