30 January 2017 - Issue 15/2016-2017from the THE WALLINGTON WEEK Message from the Head Teacher Dear Parents and Carers In our assemblies last week, we recognised and celebrated Black History Month. These assemblies were very ably led by five of our Year 12 students; Sinead, Temi, Xue, Jada and Sunmi. They each talked about the impact that black women have had on science and engineering as well as promoting the different events that they have organised over the next few weeks to celebrate Black History. These include a fashion and talent show, a form quiz, some Afro-Caribbean food tasting as well as an after school screening of the acclaimed film The Help. They have also invited in two prominent speakers to talk to our students; Courtney Daniela, a Cambridge undergraduate and well known you tuber and Tobi Oredein, a journalist, who will talk about her the portrayal of black women in the media and her own experiences. I would encourage all of our students to come along and support these various events. On Wednesday we held our hustings which provided our senior prefect hopefuls with an opportunity to put forward their case as to why they should be selected to be on the Senior Prefect team. Subsequently Year 12 students and all staff have now voted and positions will finalised by the end of this week. We also held a very successful careers evening last Wednesday which focused on careers in Science. Nearly all of the sessions were oversubscribed and included talks on Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry as well as careers in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Thank you to everyone who gave presentations including a number of our own science staff. On Tuesday Year 10 enjoyed a PSHCE session on looking after your mental health. They spent the morning discussing things that are likely to affect their mental health and then looking at strategies to help them deal with them. Finally a reminder that our school performance of Thirty-Nine Steps is taking place this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at lunchtime in the second foyer. Richard Booth Headteacher
The Week Ahead Monday 30 January 08.25-14.50 School Production Dress Rehearsal Tuesday 31 January Thursday 2 February 19.00-21.00 School Production The 39 Steps Thursday 2 February 08.25-13.05 Intermediate Maths Challenge French Play for Years 8-13 The Onatti Theatre Company visited school again today with their latest French production for all French students in Years 8 13. The play, entitled Le Café, ran through the highs and lows of Colette s first day at work as a waitress in the café and there were many comic moments to keep us entertained throughout. The 2 actors were admirably supported by volunteers from the audience and we all enjoyed watching the participants in action. We have been hosting these language plays for a number of years as they are not only a highly entertaining way to practise listening comprehension skills but also provide our students with the opportunity to hear authentic French speakers using a range of current phrases which helps to enrich their own range of vocabulary. We shall also be hosting German and Spanish plays later in the year.
