Please send any comments or suggestions to NISD Communications Coordinator Rayanne Schmid Superintendent's Message It's a great day in Nacogdoches ISD! http://www.discoveryeducation.com Discovery Education is an excellent site for just about anything education, for teachers, parents, and students. Quick Links Facebook Twitter Calendar Parent Resources We are nearing the end of an excellent year in Nacogdoches ISD, but there still are great things going on at our schools. This week we had everything from campus leadership teams spending the night on a rooftop to "Clap Outs" this week. The educators, Dr. Fred Hayes staff, and students are making these last few weeks memorable and engaging ones, and I encourage you to get involved in the exciting events occurring on our campuses. A list of all activities can be found at www.nacisd.org. This past week I have been rereading The Noticer, a book by Andy Andrews, one of my favorite authors. In this book the narrator tells of an old man in the community who connects with him and through the elderly man's kindness and perspective the narrator's life is changed for the better. One of my favorite quotes from the book is, "Consider that even the simplest actions you take for your lives matter beyond measure...and they matter forever." Our lives often get caught up in mundane, daily steps and we forget that a kind word or deed can make a huge difference 1 of 5 This week in NISD Friday, May 10 * AP English Language and Composition Testing * First grade Field Trip to Caldwell Zoo, Raguet Elementary * Kindergarten Breakfast with Mom, 7:45-8:30 a.m., Thomas J. in the lives of others and in our own lives. Today, in NISD we are starting a new campaign that focuses on kindness - "Because Nice Matters." Signs are appearing throughout the community for the next month, and they serve to remind us, all of us, that kindness is the most important quality one can possess. Kindness finds its root in love, and I cannot think of a more important aspect that we should practice in our lives than love. * Muffins with Mom, 7:30-8:30 a.m., Fredon Elementary Sunday, May 12 * Mother's Day Monday, May 13 * AP Physics B Testing * EOC Social Studies, 9th and 10th grade Tuesday, May 14 * EOC Algebra Exam * Math Retest, 8th grade * 7th and 8th Grade Spring Concert at SFA Turner Auditorium, 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 * Reading Retest, 8th grade * AP US History Testing Thursday, May 16 * UIL Competition, Stephen F. Fine Arts, 411 Mound Street. Penny Drop Fundraiser Find a penny, pick it up -- then carry it to your elementary campus and drop it in the Penny Drop container! On December 14, 2012, tragedy struck the town of Newtown, Connecticut as 26 were killed -- 20 students and 6 adults -- in one of the worst school shootings in history. The Penny Drop Fundraiser is an opportunity for NISD to give back to those in Newtown. Each elementary school campus is collecting pennies to buy books in memory and honor of those who were lost in the tragic shooting. The schools are competing to see who can collect the most pennies -- hence the name, "Penny Drop." Other donations are also acceptable, but we ask that only pennies are put in the containers. For more information on how you can help, contact your elementary campus.
