International School of Bremen Parent Bulletin 12 2017/18 Paddington As you read this, the little children will just have watched Paddington 2. The moral of the film is that Paddington always only sees the good in people. This is perhaps something for us all. Hip Hop - New After-School Activity Stefan, our Grade 11 student showcased below right, is not only an accomplished weight-lifter, but also a very keen hip hop dancer. He would like to pass on his dancing experience to our younger students. As from next Thursday, 30 November, he will be starting a class for students of Grade 4-6. Those interested need not register beforehand, but just go to the Small Gym on the First Floor. Students should wear their PE kit or comfortable clothes and clean gym shoes. See also advert below and a larger version as an attachment to this Bulletin. Food Drive Do remember that our Bremer Tafel food drive will only be running for another week until 1 December so, if you have not already done so, please remember the needy and buy a few items of storable food for them. For more information, see last week s Parent Bulletin and the attachment sent with it. New Date for Summer Barbecue Note that the date of the Summer Barbecue has been changed. The ISB calendar that you received from us at the beginning of the school year states 16 June, however the event will now be taking place two weeks earlier. The new date is: Saturday, 2 June 2018. Meet Our CAS Students... Stefan, Grade 11 Action is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting sections. For years now, I ve been interested in weight-lifting and have always found it fascinating. CAS is a perfect opportunity to reflect on my progress. I already have two years of weightlifting experience and would like to continue to progress. My goal for action would be to eventually take part in a weightlifting competition in Germany. I plan to reflect every day on my progress, in both positive and negative points of view. I would practice this activity at my gym in Bremen, the Universum gym. Here I would find a supervisor to supervise my progress to ensure that it is professional. This project is easily presentable by taking videos and pictures in my practice sessions, and presenting them at the end in front of an audience. All my investigations are complete for this activity. I investigated the location for practice, for a supervisor, as well as a good method for reflecting. 2 Parent Bulletin 24 November 2017

University and Career Guidance Counselling (Grades 9-12) Fees in England and Wales Please be advised that fees for EU citizens attending English and Welsh universities will be increased across the board from September 2018 to 9,250. There are no scholarships in the UK, but some do offer bursaries for high achievement in the IB or for studying particular degrees. The cost per year for international students in the UK varies, but is considerably more than that for EU students. SAT Exam The December SAT exam is less than a month away, taking place on 2 December, 8.00am. As we would like to give our students everything they need to succeed, we recommend Trio Prep that provides the opportunity for every student at ISB to work with an SAT test prep expert who has scored in the top 1 %. To enroll, go to: trioprep.com/go What Should You Be Doing? If you are planning to go to university next year, you must apply by 15 January, in most instances. This deadline varies, depending on the country - it can be earlier or later. If you have not applied by the cut-off date, you cannot attend the following year - it is that simple. There are still a large number of students who have sent off their applications. REMEMBER: You must give teachers 3 weeks notice to write your recommendation, so you have one more week to request these. The 3-week period of notice does not include holidays.
