I begin today s Newsletter, feeling very privileged and blessed to have been appointed last week, as the Principal of our wonderful School Community- On sharing this news with my family, I have been delighted to learn that my late grandmother began her school years here at Sacred Heart, as a five year old boarder- Sacred Heart has very quickly become close to my heart, and I feel a strong sense of responsibility to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, for continuing our work, both this term, and into the future, in combining our strengths and talents to provide a wonderful education for our boys and girls, and a continued sense of community for all families and staff. Learning This week, our children in Years Three and Five, complete their NAPLAN assessments in Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation. The best possible preparation for any assessments, is being well rested, and I thank Mrs Julia Hill, and Miss Claire Cooper for their preparation of the children, ensuring they are well supported and excited about completing these tests, to demonstrate the learning and understandings they have covered in the past two or so, school years. Yesterday saw our staff gather with our School Support Consultant, Ms Tamara Boyer and our School Improvement Advisor, Mrs Eileen Climo, to examine student data, for the purpose of identifying trends over time, what areas we have to celebrate, and areas for focus and further development. The data that staff work with, includes PIPS (Performance Indicators in Pre School), NAPLAN, the Bishops Religious Literacy Assessments (BRLA), Early Years Literacy and Numeracy Data (EYLND) completed in Years One and Two, and standardised tests. The analysis of student data, both internal and external, is a necessary AITSL Professional Practice skill. Assessment can be for learning, of learning and as learning- purposeful assessment informs teachers planning (formative), and gives information about student progress, (summative). Engagement What a wonderful Mothers Day celebration we all enjoyed last Friday afternoon! The efforts of our Parents and Friends Association, and in particular, our Year Two parents, under the guidance of our president, Mrs Sharee Hogg, ensured all mothers were treated to High Tea, a beautiful rose and a special time with their children. Thank you to everyone for their work. I hope the Mother's Day festival continued over the weekend, and that all mothers enjoyed special treatment, and the love and support of their children and families. This evening, our Parents and Friends Association has scheduled a workshop in our Library, starting at 6.45pm, for the purpose of establishing some big ideas for focus over this year. There will be some early contributions from our School Board Chair, Mr Steven Brown, our Assistant Principal, Mrs Carolyn Perlini, and myself. It is hoped that parents will be provided with a context, and emerging from discussions, will be a range of suggestions for focus areas and developments at our School, for wider consultation. Special thanks to Andrew Del Marco, (Vice President of the P and F) for his coordination of tonight's workshop please try to get along to participate in future planning for our boys and girls. Accountability I have enjoyed the privilege of conducting the 2016 Kindergarten enrolment Interviews over past weeks. This process sees us working closely with Fr Peter Bianchini, as we are a school that enjoys a close relationship with our parish. Fr Peter and I have been heartened to meet with young families who are excited about the prospect of joining the Sacred Heart School Community. In preparing for the interviews, I have been called to reflect on our purpose as a Catholic Primary School, the prominence that is given to the Religious Education Learning Area, and the opportunity to experience positive liturgical experiences. In addition, we share with families, the importance of sound, oral language development in the early years, and the importance of technology in supporting good, foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Perhaps what comes through very strongly in our discussions with parents, is their desire to provide a Catholic education for their children, as they themselves have experienced, and a school that has a strong sense of community and welcome- this is our collective responsibility, and I thank everyone for their continued efforts to contribute to our success as a Catholic Primary School! We look forward to welcoming our 2016 Kindergarten children at an Orientation and Transition day, later this year.

Discipleship This Thursday, our Year Three parents will gather for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance) Information evening in the Library at 7.00pm. This very important milestone in your child's faith journey is a time of celebration and preparation. Reconciliation is a Sacrament of healing, restoring our relationship with Jesus when we have broken that relationship, through choices we make. As a school, we look forward to supporting you, as the primary educators of your children, with preparation for this very special Sacramental journey. The Religious Education programme here at school, offers your child a basic understanding of Reconciliation, but the opportunity to deepen this understanding, and experience of the sacraments, is provided by you as parents, when you ensure your child is able to attend Mass regularly, and reflect on how the sacraments make continued contributions to their developing faith. I look forward to meeting with you all tomorrow evening, as together with our Parish Priest, Father Peter Bianchini, our Parish Sacramental coordinator, Mrs Nadia Napoli, and our Assistant Principals, Mrs Renee Byrne-King and Mrs Carolyn Perlini, we all commit to this most special of journeys. In closing, can I thank everyone for their continued efforts to contribute to all that is Sacred Heart! Term Two is a busy one, and through everyone s hard work and organisation, our boys and girls experience a smooth start to our days, and positive learning. As the days become cooler, we are very fortunate to be able to access delicious warm lunches from our Canteen- I'm planning to work my way through the Menu! Many thanks and God Bless, Mrs Tanya McGuire Principal IMPORTANT SCHOOL DATES May 11 NAPLAN (11th to 15th May) 13 Year 1 & 2 Class Mass - 9.00am P&F Strategic Planning Meeting - 6.45pm School Library 14 Reconciliation Information Evening - 7.00pm School Library 16 Enrolment Mass Confirmation - 6.00pm 20 Year 3 & 4 Class Mass - 9.00am School Board Meeting - 6.30pm 23 Enrolment Mass Eucharist - 6.00pm 29 Catholicity Day - SCHOOL CLOSED Jun 1 PUBLIC HOLIDAY - SCHOOL CLOSED 2 STAFF PD DAY - SCHOOL CLOSED 3 P&F Meeting - 7.00pm School Library Engaging Hearts and Minds Our school has been focusing on "Being Respectful" so far this term with pleasing results. Y charts were used to introduce and teach this skill to the students. Following class discussions about what this skill looks like, sounds like and feels like, the teachers recorded the students answers on a Y chart. Here is an example of a Y chart, created by our Year 2 students: It would be great for parents and care-givers to please reinforce and practise this skill with their children at home. Thank you for supporting our whole-school social skills program. Year 1 and Year 2 Class Liturgy The Year 1 and Year 2 classes participated in their class liturgy at the Sacred Heart Church, this morning.
