The Market Weighton School Expect More - Achieve More Parent Newsletter March 2017 Headteacher s Update We are past the halfway point of the academic year already! Our Year 11 students have just completed a second set of trial exams and are beginning the final countdown to their GCSE examinations which start on Monday 15 th May. Kevin Mincher, a leading performance coach, visited the school on our most recent Personal Development day to work with Year 9, 10 and 11 students on the strategies they can use to improve their exam performance and be successful in life. He also shared his thoughts with staff in a training session after school where we all picked up some valuable strategies. His website Unstoppable Teen has lots of free resources and blogs that students can refer to in order to help keep their focus over the coming weeks. The PE department has been busy with fixtures and it is great to see TMWS students competing in a wider range of sports such as basketball and table tennis. Getting more students involved in competitive sport was one of our targets this year and it has been fantastic to hear of our successes, often against much bigger schools. Following the refurbishment of our canteen we are looking to reduce the cost of school meals and at the same time encourage healthy eating. We are now offering free vegetables with each main meal which will hopefully encourage students to add veg to their meal and reduce the cost for those who are already making healthy choices. We now have ties available to buy for 5 from reception; they can be paid for through the school gateway and collected the next day. We hope to maintain a good stock in school to reduce the time it has been taking to get delivery from Price and Buckland. Thank you to all parents in supporting our uniform policy; please do ensure that students are coming to school in appropriate skirts, trousers and shoes. I am reluctant to go to a specific supplier for these items as the costs will be considerably higher but I do need to stress that short skirts, leggings and trainers are not acceptable. We have had a very successful visit to an ICT conference in Paris with a group of Year 10 and 11 students and we are looking forward to our two other residential trips which are new for 2017. Almost all of Year 8 are now signed up to go to Kingswood s Dearne Valley Outdoor Activity Centre in South Yorkshire for the week beginning 15 th May; Mrs Hall is holding a parents meeting for this on Thursday 27 th April at 6.00 pm. Then, the week after half term, 40 Year 9 students will be heading off to the west coast of France for a week of water sports and other outdoor activities. We appreciate that these visits come at a cost to parents and thank you for making it possible for us to give these memorable and valuable experiences to our students. Richard Harrison Headteacher

East Riding Table Tennis As reported in our previous newsletter, Ewan Henderson (Year 8) has been competing in the East Riding Table Tennis Competition. He progressed through to the final round which consisted of 16 competitors. Overall, he has been given a 10 th ranking in the North East region. An amazing achievement! Well done Ewan. East Riding Apprenticeship Pathway Event Fifteen Year 11 students attended an East Riding Apprenticeship Pathway Event at Bishop Burton College on Wednesday 1 February. The event was a collaboration between East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Bishop Burton College, local careers advisors, local training providers and seventeen schools in The East Riding. Students had the opportunity to discuss apprenticeships with training providers, their partner employers and some of their current apprentices. The event included sessions where students could learn about apprenticeships in general, how to apply and receive careers advice from local advisers. All students enjoyed the event, taking away lots of information and meeting prospective employers. Basketball East Riding School Partnership Tournament Our Year 10/11 boys recently donned their new Dominos sponsored basketball kit at the East Riding School Partnership Tournament. With short games due to the amount of teams that entered, the boys found it difficult to get into their stride. They lost two of their games by only one basket and they won their last. Sadly, this didn't take them through to the final but a connection was made for them to start training at Longcroft Well done to Ryan Askem who was voted player of the tournament.

Computing Live - Disneyland Paris On 25 th February we took 24 pupils from Years 10 and 11 to participate in the European Study Tour Annual Conference held at Disneyland Paris. The pupils were able to hear from three key speakers about their roles in the use and development of technology. The speakers were Geoff White, (Ch4 Technology Producer) who told us about the Secret lives of our mobile phones, Gemma Milne (Ogilvy Lab) regarding the use of VR to support space travel and medical research, and Joe McEwan (Marketing Director from Innocent Smoothies) who engaged the pupils with tales of moving a relatively new company from no online brand to being one of the most popular communicators with their customers on Twitter. As well as all this hard work, pupils were able to visit Tower Montparnasse to see the views over Paris and also enjoy a two day pass into the Disney parks. It was a very busy three days but the pupils (and staff) had a great time learning not only about the use of computer science but building independence by being away from home. We hope to run this trip again next year!

Cross Country Championships Congratulations to Laurence Lewis (Year 11) who represented East Riding in the Cross Country Championships and came 15 th ; a brilliant achievement which contributed towards East Riding winning the team event. World Book Day Miss Joshi held a competition during the run up to World Book Day (2 nd March) to design a book cover and write a first page introduction to a story. First prize was a 15 ITunes Card won by Laura Jade Greig in Year 8, the runner up was Ben Tinsdale in Year 7. Max Nicholas, Laura Jade Greig and Ben Tinsdale There was also a quiz in the Library which was won by Max Nicholas in Year 7 who correctly answered 14/15 questions on Marvel Books and Magazines. Weighton Young Players Miss Todd (Teacher of English) helps to run a youth theatre club in the school s youth centre called Weighton Young Players. On Saturday 4 th March they took part in the regional heats of the All England Theatre Festival at Bridlington Spa. In the Youth Section, Weighton Young Players won first place and received the Humberside Leisure Services Trophy for the Best Youth Performance; Ellis Brown won the Alexander Simpson Trophy for Best Actor and the group were awarded the Lincolnshire and Humberside Arts Trophy for the Best Original Play. Congratulations to all of our students involved: Ellis Brown, Ashleigh Allenden, Libby Ainley, Elizabeth Cass, Alanna Haxby, Lewis Perry, Holly Pearson, Lucie Waring and Kacy Webster. Red Nose day is on Friday 24 th March Please can students wishing to participate bring 1 for non-uniform. There will be a bun sale at break and a student talent show at lunchtime in the Hall, also 1. Thank you for your support.
