This will be an action-packed and memorable 5 days for students and community members. Maybe there will be no snow!! If any community members are interested in going on this trip please contact Mr Oliver for registration information: aoliver@riverside.k12.ia.us. Deadline is November 15. Backpack Program Riverside Elementary and Intermediate School students have the opportunity to participate in the backpack program again this school year. The backpack program is designed to provide food for hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as during weekends and school vacations. Food Bank for the Heartland supplies packs filled with nutritious food for children to take home on Friday afternoons. Each pack provides two breakfast meals and two lunch or dinner meals. If you would like your child/ children to participate, please call Jana Hensley at 484-2291 or email me at jhensley@riverside.k12.ia.us. Thank you! Submitted by Jana Hensley 2

Riverside Allergy Awareness (Mr. Meek and Mrs. Palmer) There have been some discussions about the expectations of food allergies at Riverside Schools. Here is what we consider when it comes to peanut/tree nut allergies. 1. All Riverside kitchens are peanut/tree nut free. 2. Any snacks sent to classrooms for birthdays, celebrations, or other classroom parties should be peanut/ tree nut free. Any purchased or homemade snack should include the ingredient list. A recipe is OK to send if made at home. 3. We do allow peanut butter to be brought in a lunch. We ask that students not share/trade lunch items. If there are any changes to a specific classroom regarding food allergies, parents will be notified in writing. Join The Riverside Booster Club The Riverside Booster Club s purpose is to assist all grades, clubs and organizations, including athletics, band, choir, National Honor Society, drama, yearbook, FCCLA, etc. in obtaining needed items. In the past, we have purchased athletic uniforms and supplies, band uniforms, bike helmets, risers for the choir, a tent for track, donated toward shirts for K-12 students and staff, donated toward student trips/camps (all-state camp, neuro camp, choir students to sing in NYC, etc.), helped to send band members to the Orange Bowl and other honor bands, FCCLA members to the state conference, scholarships, post prom, and many other school organizations that have needed funding for projects for students. The Riverside Booster is having a competition between Elem/IS staff against HS staff. Winners will receive a Blimpies Blast. Please let us know if there is anything we might be able to help you with. FLAGS These kids spend 3 days at Wartburg's All-State camp at the beginning of August to learn the music for auditions in October. The process is extremely difficult, and the level of music is very collegiate. If anyone is accepted after auditions, they will sing in a chorus of 600 kids from all over the state at Iowa State's Hilton Coliseum. It's truly the highest honor you can achieve as a high school choir student. During the first week of school, students in grades Kindergarten through Grade 12 had their pictures taken in the new school building. We want to include those in this newsletter and upcoming newsletters. We have also added something new with the newsletter this year. We have some students helping out with taking photos, writing articles, and other duties as assigned. Safeco Player of the Game Hummel Insurance Services is proud to have once again been selected as part of an exclusive group of insurance agencies associated with Safeco Insurance, a Liberty Mutual Company, invited to participate in the Player of the Game (POTG) Program. This program highlights a high school varsity football player of the game at each home game of the Riverside Bulldogs. The player selected will receive a certificate, as well as a commemorative medallion and football at the conclusion of the game. On August 22, 2016, Craig Hummel, on behalf of Safeco Insurance and Hummel Insurance Services, presented a check in the amount of $500 to the Riverside Athletic Department, in association with the Player of the Game Program. The Player of the Game banner, which was presented last year, is proudly displayed below the Press Box. The presentation was made to: Dr. Timothy Mitchell, Supt., Dave Gute, High School Principal, Liz Graves, Athletic Director, and Mitch Rice, Head Football Coach.
