INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KANPUR PHYSICAL EDUCATION SECTION Information about PE Courses for First Year Students ACADEMIC YEAR 2018-2019 Date: 10 th July, 2018 Compulsory Physical Education Courses are senate approved courses for B. Tech. / BS students. These courses are offered in the first two semesters of the academic program under the course numbers PE-101A & PE-102A. Both the courses have two components, namely: SI. No. PE Classes Schedule Duration 01. Physical Exercises Morning(6:00am-7:00am) Two hours per week 02. Personality Development Activities (Games & Sports, Yoga, NSS, Tae- Kwon-Do, Aerobics, Cultural activities, Wall climbing and NCC). A. GAMES & SPORTS Aerobics 5.30PM Yoga 6.30 PM NCC (Saturday 08:40AM) Rest of Activities (05:45PM) One hour session twice in a week with a total of minimum 22 hours during the semester. The Chairman, Sports & Physical Education Committee (SPEC) is the instructor in-charge of these courses. The courses are graded as S (satisfactory)/ X (Unsatisfactory). The grade will be given after the end semester examination. A minimum of 75% attendance and satisfactory performance in each of the two components will be necessary for obtaining S grade. All students undergo at least four hours of activities per week (Two hrs. in morning & two hrs. in the afternoon given above. The students have to opt for one of the following 19 Personality Development Activities categorized into two streams: 1. Athletics 7. Squash (Boys & Girls ) 2. Badminton 8. Swimming 3. Basketball 9. Table Tennis 4. Cricket (Boys only) 10. Tennis 5. Football (Boys only) 11. Volleyball (Boys &Girls) 6. Hockey (Boys only) 12. Weight Lifting (Boys only) B. OTHER PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES 1. AEROBICS 5. TAE KWON DO 2. NCC (Boys only) 6. YOGA 3. NSS 7. Cultural Activities 4. Wall Climbing -- The students who want to opt for an activity under Games & Sports can give preferences for utmost two games. The final allotment of activity will be based on trial(s) of the opted game(s), provided they are selected in trials. It has been observed that increasing number of fresh students are not physically fit. This affects their overall personality and development. In view of this, the PE section has devised a structure for physical exercises. Under this structure, all fresh students will have PE twice a week which will help them improve their physical and mental fitness.

1 Physical Exercises: Participation will be twice a week. This would run during August November in the morning. The details of the activities to be undertaken will be available on the PE Course web site http://www.iitk.ac.in/pes/pecourses and will also be sent to the enrolled students. 2 Personality Development Activities: Selection trials will be held during 28 th July to 30 th July 2018 to fill up the allocated numbers for different activities. Students are required to fill-up the option form for the streams, which will be collected on the day of registration. Numbers of seats available under different steam are as follows. Distribution of seats is tentative and numbers may change, if circumstances so require (i) Games & Sports (Coordinator: Chairman, SPEC) Seats =286 (B&G) Games & Sports will be held twice a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. Seats will be filled up through selection trials conducted by coaches/coordinator. (ii) NSS (Coordinator: Prof. Sandeep Sangal) Seats = 70 (B&G) NSS will be conducted once a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. Seats will be filled on the basis of option given/trial. (iii) YOGA (Coordinator: Chairman, SPEC) Seats = 63 (B&G) Yoga will be conducted once a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. Seats will be filled on the basis of option given/trial. (iv) TAE KWON DO (Coordinator: Chairman, SPEC) Seats = 63(B&G) Tae Kwon Do will be conducted once a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. Seats will be filled on the basis of option given/trial. (v) AEROBICS (Coordinator: Chairman, SPEC) Seats = 25 (B&G) Aerobics will be conducted once a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. Seats will be filled on the basis of option given/trial. (vi) Wall climbing (Coordinator: Chairman, SPEC) Seats = 17 (B&G) Skating will be conducted once a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. Seats will be filled on the basis of option given/trial. (vii) NCC (Coordinator: Commanding Officer NCC) Seats=320(Boys only) NCC activities will be conducted once a week with a total of 22-24 hours of activity during the semester. For NCC no trial will be held. Any student, except foreign nationals, can take NCC. Students selected under NCC have to participate on occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day parades. (viii) Cultural Activities: Dr. Ritwij Bhowmik, Coordinator Seats= 60 (B&G) Participation will be two hours a week. Selection trials will be held during 28th July to 29th July to fill up the seats for the following FOUR activities. Tentative numbers of seats available under different steam are as follows. The outstanding players (students) will have an opportunity to represent the institute team in various sports meets/festivals, such as, Inter IIT Sports Meet and District level tournaments. Meritorious players are awarded prizes and medals at the annual function of the Student Gymkhana. The achievements of the meritorious players are also considered for some institute awards.
