Overall MSUB Enrollment by IPEDS Race Designations MSUB Student Population as Defined by IPEDS Race The student body at MSUB is predominantly white, 83% of the total student enrollment over the last five years. The next most numerous are the Hispanic (5%) and the American Indian (4%) students. The remaining designations combined, comprise 8%. In contrast to the MT Race designations, Hispanic and Multi Racial percentages are higher and American Indian are lower. IPEDS Race definition: Ethnicity and race information is student selfreported data. The federal Integrated Post Secondary Education Data System (IPEDS) protocol dictates a two question format. The first question asks about ethnicity (is the individual Hispanic or Latino, yes or no) and the second question asks about race (the individual is asked to select one or more race categories with which he or she identifies). All respondents must have the opportunity to answer both questions. The categories for reporting are: Hispanic (regardless of race); and for non Hispanics: American Indian or Alaska Native; Asian; Black or African American; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; White; Two or more races. In addition, Nonresident alien (for whom race and ethnicity is not reported), and Race and ethnicity unknown. 9 7 5 3 2 1 Percent Enrollment by IPEDS Race Fall 2016 Census Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Asian Black/African American Unknown Non Resident Alien Multi Racial American Indian or Alaska Native Hispanic White TOTAL Fall Census Headcount Enrollment by IPEDS Race American Indian or Alaska Native 202 4% 212 4% 192 4% 185 4% 177 4% Asian 45 1% 46 1% 49 1% 40 1% 40 1% Black/African American 40 1% 53 1% 54 1% 43 1% 50 1% Hispanic 218 4% 215 4% 221 5% 219 5% 229 5% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 7 11 14 9 11 White 4268 84% 4110 83% 3928 82% 3652 82% 3563 82% Multi Racial 110 2% 124 2% 115 2% 116 3% 127 3% Unknown 58 1% 42 1% 63 1% 52 1% 63 1% Non Resident Alien (International) 133 3% 155 3% 145 3% 113 3% 106 2% 5081 4968 4781 4429 4366 UNDERGRADUATE Fall Census Headcount Enrollment by IPEDS Race American Indian or Alaska Native 191 4% 201 4% 180 4% 174 4% 164 4% Asian 35 1% 40 1% 43 1% 37 1% 36 1% Black/African American 37 1% 49 1% 54 1% 42 1% 48 1% Hispanic 197 4% 201 4% 205 5% 208 5% 215 5% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 7 10 13 9 10 White 3858 84% 3739 82% 3559 82% 3302 82% 3221 81% Multi Racial 102 2% 116 3% 105 2% 108 3% 121 3% Unknown 52 1% 36 1% 55 1% 45 1% 58 1% Non Resident Alien (International) 127 3% 147 3% 139 3% 109 3% 99 2% 4606 4539 4353 4034 3972 0 GRADUATE Fall Census Headcount Enrollment by IPEDS Race American Indian or Alaska Native 11 2% 11 3% 12 3% 11 3% 13 3% Asian 10 2% 6 1% 6 1% 3 1% 4 1% Black/African American 3 1% 4 1% 0 1 2 1% Hispanic 21 4% 14 3% 16 4% 11 3% 14 4% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 0 1 1 0 1 White 410 86% 371 86% 369 86% 350 89% 342 87% Multi Racial 8 2% 8 2% 10 2% 8 2% 6 2% Unknown 6 1% 6 1% 8 2% 7 2% 5 1% Non Resident Alien (International) 6 1% 8 2% 6 1% 4 1% 7 2% 475 429 428 395 394

MSUB Undergraduate Enrollment by Age Exactly what constitutes a nontraditional student has been the source of much discussion in recent research. Most often age (especially being over the age of 24) has been the defining characteristic for this population. Age acts as a surrogate variable that captures a large, heterogeneous population of adult students who often have family and work responsibilities as well as other life circumstances that can interfere with successful completion of educational objectives.
