HOUSE BILL 5 HB 5 HB 5 adjusted the graduation programs from the Minimum, Recommended, and Distinguished plans (current 10 th, 11 th, 12 th ) to a single Foundation High School Program (FHSP) w/options (incoming 9 th, current 9 th ). FHSP is now mandated for all students entering 9 th grade starting 2014 +. Any current 10 th, 11 th or 12 th grade student may choose to graduate under FHSP.

FOUNDATION PLAN OPTIONS 1 - Foundation Program requires 22 state credits Similar to current Minimum plan (graduating on FHSP w/out endorsement does not allow for direct entry into a 4 year University); Not available for choice until the completion of the student s sophomore year (must meet w/counselor) 2 - Foundation + Endorsement requires 26 state credits Similar to current Recommended plan The student will complete the Foundation program (22) plus an Endorsement (4) based on a choice of a Program of Study ( career ). 3 - Distinguished Level of Achievement requires 26 credits MUST include Algebra 2 and the completion of an endorsement Similar to current Distinguished plan w/language requirement of 2 years

ENDORSEMENT Decision/Requirement Discuss interests, careers, likes/dislikes review the examples of Programs of Study within the 5 Endorsement areas to help your child with their decision. STUDENT MUST INDICATE (IN WRITING) AN ENDORSEMENT HE/SHE INTENDS TO EARN UPON ENTERING 9 TH GRADE on the Personal Graduation Plan (PGP). STUDENT MAY CHANGE ENDORSEMENT UPON WRITTEN REQUEST AND PROVIDED THE TIME RESTRAINTS PERMIT THE CHANGE.

PERSONAL GRADUATION PLAN (PGP) PGP sample is given on website. HB 5 requires ALL 9 th graders to have PGP which MUST be signed by Student and Parent and returned to HS Counselor. PGPs will be kept for all students in Counseling center (make copy/take a picture for your files) SAMPLES of 4 year plans/schedule choices are available Endorsement areas are on website to help you. Students MUST indicate a Program of Study and check off the corresponding Endorsement on their PGP.
Additional Graduation Plan decisions: DISTINGUISHED LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT The Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA) replaces the current Distinguished Achievement Plan as the highest graduation plan in the state of Texas for students entering high school in 2014-15. In order to be considered for the Top 10% Automatic Admission in Texas Public Universities, graduates MUST earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA) diploma which requires passing Algebra 2. CHANGE: 2 years of a Language other than English (LOTE) vs 3 in current 10 th 12 th grades.
PERFORMANCE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Students may earn a performance acknowledgement indicated on the their transcript by achieving Outstanding Performance in one of the following areas: --In a dual credit course at least 12 dual credit hours as part of Texas core curriculum or advanced technical credit with a grade of 80 or above --In bilingualism and bi-literacy --On an AP test with a score of 4 or 5 on an AP exam --On the PSAT, the SAT, or the ACT PSAT commended scholar, National Hispanic Scholar, National Achievement Scholar SAT combined Critical Reading and Math of at least 1250 ACT composite of 28 --Earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification or license certification; or --Examination performance to obtain a government required credential to practice a profession.

Parent/Guardian and Student MUST sign the schedule & PGP (required by HB5). TEACHER signatures required for some choices Students must RETURN form to the Junior High School counselor on or before APRIL 14th!
HOW do we know what our kids will PICK? 1. Start by discussing a possible Program of Study. 2. Go to that Endorsement area. 3. Pick up a course sample sheet for that specific Program of Study (pick 1) 3. Write the Endorsement on the top of the sample PGP 4. Review elective course selections (hot pink)
Bottom line: Students will meet w/hs Counselors and input choices on computer. 7 Period day Students must have 7 classes plus alternates in mind! 1. English 2. Math 3. Science 4. Social Studies 5. Elective (typically a PE PE or Athletics, Dance, Band) 6. Elective (typically a Fine Arts Band, Theater, Art, Dance) 7. Elective (any open to 9th language, speech, health, Ag, etc ) 8. To take or not to take: Advanced Level Classes 9th graders - Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) options are available for many CORE classes The majority of Advanced Placement (AP)/Dual credit classes begin Jr year. Pre-AP classes earn a 5 pt bump on GPA AP/Dual credit classes earn a 10 pt bump on GPA IF it sounds too good THESE classes are challenging and expectations are high! I ll try and see what it is like is NOT an easy option in high school scheduling. YOU know your child s maturity level, capabilities, study habits and extra-curricular involvements (and your work schedule, siblings, etc ) IF you have doubts, talk to your child s current teachers (THEY MUST SIGN OFF)!
FINAL THOUGHTS Discuss choices w/child before April 7 th /8 th write it down for them IMPORTANT: IF you have questions, PLEASE make a copy of your form and email me for an appointment BUT please have your child turn in signed original to Junior High School on/before APRIL 14th! We must have something in the system. YOU and YOUR child ARE IMPORTANT to me time is my enemy. EMAIL is my friend I m here until June 26th and I return July 27th.
