Sporting News. Year 5 & 6 Swimming Gala On Friday 20 th April children from Year 5 and 6 took part in the annual Worcester School Games Swimming Gala at Perdiswell Sports Centre. The children were excited to take part in the big event against 15 other schools. They competed in individual races as well as a number of relays with points being accumulated throughout the gala. It was a fantastic afternoon with the children displaying great sportsmanship and team spirit throughout. The children finished the gala in a very strong 8 th position. Congratulations to all who took part. Under 11s Football Match On Tuesday 24 th April, the Under 11- football team took part in a league match against Northwick Manor Primary School. This was the first competitive game played for a while and our team were looking forward to the challenge. The first goal was scored by Oliver (Year 6) and quickly followed by a goal from Lewis (Year 6). St Josephs dominated the game and won comfortable 6 2. Well done to all who played. Year 4 Tag Rugby Festival On Thursday 26 th April Year 4 took part in a tag rugby festival at Blessed Edwards. The whole class took part and competed as 3 separate teams, A, B and C against other local primary schools, 15 teams in total. Year 4 represented St Joseph s perfectly throughout the morning. All children displayed wonderful listening skills, team spirit and determination. The festival finished with the following results: A team 8 th, B Team 10 th, C team 15 th. Well done to all who took part.

On Tuesday 16th April, ten boys from Upper Key Stage Two had the opportunity to go to a special World Book Day event hosted by The Albion Foundation this is what they had to say about it: It was a brilliant opportunity for us to have a day at a different school and meet other children. We paired up with St George s, Kidderminster. Our first workshop was on reading which we started with an A-Z football game! We then discussed the three roles needed in a group read questioner, predictor, clarifier. Next we read a couple of chapters of Dan Freedman s book, Born to Play. The second workshop was on writing. We became journalists who had to report on a football match. We had to find the information by reading notes given to us and talking to others to get the whole story and then write the report all in 30 minutes! After lunch (meatballs and pasta or jacket potatoes!), we took part in an outdoor spelling football workshop. The cones represented letters and we had two challenges One, to make the longest word and two, to make the most words. We hed to dribble the ball to the cones to make the words and work as a team to be successful. At the end of the day, Dan Freedman, (the creator of the Jamie Johnson series of books), Talked about his life as a footballer, a journalist and an author. He told us he had interviewed Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney! He called us his bosses as he writes for us. He also explained that we were the first ones to hear about his new book about sporting twins. It sounded very exciting. We all came away with a free, signed copy of his book Born to Play. It was a great day and we had lots to tell friends and family when we came back! Sam, Brandon, Tom and Oliver (Y6) Huge thanks to Rich and all the guys from The Albion Foundation who planned the day and worked with the children. Also to Dan Freedman for coming to speak to the children and inspiring them to read and write for pleasure.
