Elevate [Math] 8 2015 Program Results Sares Regis Program Report

Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) The Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) is a nonprofit resource and advocate for students and educators. We drive academic achievement in the critical areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by combining resources and partnerships to provide innovative academic programs. We use an unparalleled combination of experience and diversity to elevate achievement through education policy advocacy, direct service programs, and resources for innovation. Our mission is to make Silicon Valley the leader in academically prepared students. We achieve this via a multi-faceted strategy that includes: 1) operating programs that impact students directly, strategically targeting gateway courses such as 8th grade math and high school chemistry and biology, to make sure students stay on course for high school graduation and college success; 2) working directly with school districts to reform policies that are holding students back from achieving their full potential; and 3) working with the business and high tech communities to bring innovative education technology into the classroom, ensuring that students are gaining the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century economy. In March of 2015, SVEF received a $15,000 grant from Sares Regis to support Elevate [Math] 8 in Redwood City and San Mateo-Foster City during the summer of 2015. Below please find details on the success we were able to achieve in the last year, thanks to support from Sares Regis. Elevate [Math] 8 SVEF s Elevate [Math] 8 is an intensive 75-hour summer intervention program that prepares incoming 8 th graders for success in Common Core 8 by providing them with a solid base from which to build their math skills. Elevate [Math] helps targeted students achieve improved scores on assessments and foster strong interest in pursuing collegetrack coursework and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The ultimate goal, for this program, is to narrow the achievement gap for students in Silicon Valley. Elevate [Math] provides students with instruction from a credentialed teacher, utilizing curriculum developed by SVEF and the Santa Clara County Office of Education to address the concepts these students have struggled with in the past and introducing new content based on the grade 8 CCSS (e.g. transformational geometry, probability/statistics). Participating teachers receives 40 hours of Common Core aligned professional development. The program also focuses on developing college awareness through field trips to San Jose State, Santa Clara or Stanford Universities, and outreach to parents through a College Night that discusses college aspirations. In the summer of 2015: - SVEF administered 47 Elevate [Math] classes across 27 school districts. Elevate [Math] 8 2

- SVEF provided 47 Silicon Valley teachers with 40 hours of Common Core aligned professional development. - 1,161 students participated in Elevate [Math] 8, with 75% of students successfully completing the program. - 70% of students in our target populations are on federal free or reduced lunch programs. - 88% of participating students were from underserved communities. - Students demonstrated an average growth in mathematics proficiency of 23%, based on pre- and post- program MDTP assessments. Overall, students completing the program saw their assessment results grow by 23% on average. The district-by-district breakdown is shown in the figure below. Elevate [Math] 8 3

I did not just learn how to solve hard math problems but I learned how to be confident in myself and to never give up. Federally Validated In June of 2015, SVEF received the results of a federally sponsored randomized controlled trial (RCT) research study, conducted by WestEd, to assess the implementation and effectiveness of Elevate [Math]. The student-level RCT studied the impact of the summer 2014 Elevate [Math] program on participating students math knowledge and algebra readiness as well as their mathematics interest and self-efficacy. Key findings from this study showed: - Students Algebra readiness level increased by 2.4 times after completing Elevate [Math], and; - Elevate [Math] is 2 times more effective than other middle school education intervention programs. Looking Forward Due to the exciting results from WestEd s study, SVEF is now significantly scaling Elevate to reach a greater range of students throughout Silicon Valley. Scaling will include the development of three new curriculums to serve incoming 7 th, 10 th and 11 th grade students. SVEF is working with existing partners at the Santa Clara County Office of Education and East Side Union High School District to implement courses, modeled after Elevate [Math], for targeted students in those grades. To support the addition of new classes and grade level subject matter, SVEF will work with participating districts to recruit new students and teachers for the new courses. During the summer of 2016 and 2017, SVEF will add approximately 50 new Elevate classes each year to serve an increase of approximately 1,500 students each year. By 2020, Elevate will scale to serve approximately 10,000 students each summer, through an addition of approximately 300 classes. SVEF has continued to receive support from several champion sponsors and continues to add new sponsors in support of Elevate [Math]. Corporate and foundation contributions continue to be the primary source of revenue and will be instrumental as we scale to reach more of the underserved students in Silicon Valley. Through the generous support of funders like Sares Regis, SVEF and participating school districts are able to offer Elevate to students free of cost, ensuring we are able to reach all students in need.
