Fellows Application The Child & Adolescent Policy Research Institute (CAPRI) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will fund 12 undergraduate students to support education research training that promotes diversity and prepares underrepresented students for doctoral study. The UTSA Educational Research Training Program: P-20 Pipeline Issues will provide students, especially students from underrepresented backgrounds, with an introduction to education science research and scientific methods, meaningful opportunities to participate in education research studies, networking and professional development and mentoring that leads to doctoral study. Funding for this training program is provided by the Institute of Education Sciences Pathways to the Education Sciences Research Training program (Award #R305B160008). The primary objective of the fellowship training program is to provide undergraduate juniors at UTSA with experiences in conducting education research while preparing participants for doctoral study. The training program s theme focuses on research addressing inequities that exist in students' educational experiences, transitions, and outcomes from preschool through graduate school. This fellowship program funds students in all disciplines with a focus on education science. In the fall semester, the fellows will participate in an informal seminar consisting of activities to improve research and writing skills and to help them identify appropriate graduate programs. In the spring semester, fellows will participate in ongoing research apprenticeships with UTSA faculty mentors (7-10 hours per week) who have on-going education science research projects. In the summer, fellows will participate in a 1-week Young Scientist Workshop led by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) at UTSA and a 1-week long Professionalization Workshop at Stanford University that will address research related to P-20 Pipeline Issues, dual language learners, academic/research careers, academic skills and methodology, research design, and requirements for Ph.D. programs. An eight week workshop will be optional for two fellows interested in assessment and evaluation. This workshop will be led by the Educational Testing Service at the New Jersey headquarters. The fall of the fellows senior year, staff and mentors will assist fellows in applying to graduate programs. Fellows who are selected for the training program will receive a stipend totaling $5,000 and a small research fund which will be disbursed as they participate in and complete the project activities. Fellows must complete all program activities and apply for graduate programs. Each fellow will be awarded a $5,000 stipend to be distributed in 3 installments, $2,000 in the fall, $2,000 in the spring and $1,000 in the fall semester of the senior year. The first cohort of 12 fellows will be selected in 2017. The American Education Research Association (AERA) proposes the following definition for Education Science Researchers: Education science researchers study, measure, and/or assess education and learning processes and the human attributes, interactions, organizations, and institutions that shape educational and learning outcomes across all levels of education throughout the life span. Education research scholars may collect and/or analyze data using the full spectrum of research methods and modes of analysis. Applicants Must: Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident Be a junior enrolled part-time or full-time in a UTSA bachelor s program Have completed between 60 and 90 credit hours Be enrolled at UTSA or transferring from one of the Alamo Colleges into UTSA Demonstrate potential and expressed interest in pursuing a graduate program to conduct education research in any discipline Other Requirements The fellow s research focus must be relevant to U.S. education The fellow must respond to IES requests for information, and The fellow must comply with IES guidelines for acknowledgement of funding and for submission of final, peer-reviewed manuscripts after they have been accepted for publication. The fellow agrees to participate in all IES components as described in the Terms of Participation from (i.e. informal seminar, apprenticeship, workshops, presentations of research, application to graduate programs) Application must include: 1.
