President s Word It is a big honor for me as we collectively submit our third continuous annual report of SPIE Chapter, University Of Delhi at Acharya Narendra Dev College for the academic year 2012-13. It has been a very delightful journey so far as the president of the ANDC SPIE Chapter. This is the 3 rd year of our SPIE Chapter and our family has now grown multifold with around 100 active student members from three different colleges of University Of Delhi belonging to various disciplines. This year we went to fourteen different schools to promote optics and photonics under the Optics Outreach Programme of SPIE for junior level students by conducting experiments in ray optics and fiber optics for senior level students with the help of kits completely developed by our SPIE Student members. Each student member took remarkable interest in each activity of the outreach programme and their enthusiasm was highly commendable. The whole outreach programme was chained with the main event of this year Optics Fair in which all these fourteen schools participated. Each school came up with their junior and senior level working projects based on optics. It was a real pleasure to see the innovation and the joy amongst the students as well as their teachers. It is always nice to see student s enthusiasm about learning new things and that is what exactly happened in our workshop on LabVIEW. The Workshop on LabVIEW proved out to be a really fascinating and joyful experience for every one of us and I really would like thank each and every student member for putting all sheer efforts in spreading the light amongst the society. This fast paced development that our chapter witnessed could not have been possible without the tireless efforts by our faculty advisor Dr. Amit Garg. It was his sheer hard work whose fruits we all are still savoring. Pravin Kumar Jha President (2012-13) 3 P a g e

WORKSHOP ON LabVIEW and Data Acquisition 05 and 06 th October 2012 University of Delhi at ANDC SPIE student chapter organized a two day workshop on LabVIEW and Data Acquisition on 05 th and 06 th October, 2012. The workshop was attended by 50 students (Physics, Electronics and Physical Science with Electronics Department). Special Attention was paid to Virtual Instrumentation and LabVIEW environment. Students were made aware of various elements of LabVIEW programs and advanced data flow. They were also taught how to develop graphical interface in LabVIEW. There were specific LabVIEW case studies through which students learnt large program development and data acquisition with special emphasis on interfacing of Optics based experiments. Ms. Reena Sharma (Ex-teacher of Acharya Narendra Dev College and also a member of SPIE) along with Dr. Amit Garg (SPIE faculty advisor) helped in smooth conduct of the workshop and assisted the students at every place so that each and every topic becomes crystal clear in every attendees mind. SCHEDULE Topics covered: 1. Virtual Instrumentation and LabVIEW 2. LabVIEW environment 3. Elements of LabVIEW Programs 4. Presenting Results in LabVIEW 5. Advanced Data Flow 6. ANDC CHAPTER AWARDED OPTICS EDUCATION OUTREACH GRANT 2012 18 P a g e

OPTICS OUTREACH PROGRAMME 2012 Education Outreach Grant Recipient Our student chapter has been selected to be one of the 25 organizations worldwide for SPIE Education Outreach Grant to promote optics and photonics related education outreach projects. The chapter received a grant of USD 5000 for this purpose. This grant was used to promote optics through workshops and model making amongst the school students. The activities under this grant that have been conducted were in two stages- Stage-1: Workshops demonstrating various optics concepts and experiments on geometrical optics, fiber optics, laser based experiments etc. were successfully conducted in the below listed schools by our SPIE student chapter members in the month of October -December. During these workshops, students handled the batches of students cumulating upto 140. The workshops were very much cherished by the school students. Both teachers as well as students were in all praise for the effort and requested to conduct more such programmes in future. Stage-II: Optics based model competition was conducted at two levels- Junior (class VI-X) and Senior Level (Class XI-XII) amongst the schools in which the workshops were organized. Each school consenting for this programme was provided a grant of Rs. 2000/- to make one optics based model in each category. 26 high quality models developed by 14 participating schools were displayed in OPTICS FAIR, perhaps first of its kind in India, organized on 20 th December 2012 at Acharya Narendra Dev College. The models were evaluated by a separate jury of optics experts for Junior and Senior category. Each participant and the teaching mentor were given a telescope as a token of appreciation for their effort. Three prizes were awarded in each category: Junior Category: First: Rs. 1500/- + Fiber Optics Kit developed by our students Second: Rs. 1000/- + Fiber Optics Kit developed by our students Third: Rs. 500/- Senior Category: First: Rs. 1500/- + Fiber Optics Kit developed by our students Second: Rs. 1000/- + Fiber Optics Kit developed by our students Third: Rs. 500/- 19 P a g e

Our chapter members accomplished this mammoth task of demonstrating optics and related experimental kits in fourteen different schools of Delhi. Since our chapter had around hundred 20 P a g e

active chapter members thus they all were divided in various teams with a group leader for each group. These groups conducted their separate meetings and designed a framework for presenting the experiments in the most efficient manner. In this way our chapter was able to make its presence felt across Delhi and was also able to successfully promote optics at school level. The way our members gave their presentations, created an everlasting effect on the young minds and made them aware of research possibilities in the future. These presentations also gave students an insight about SPIE, its functioning, mechanism and role in development optics and photonics. 21 P a g e
