Veterans Day Monday, November 12 is a student and teacher holiday! Tuesday, November 13 will be an A day. FCMS Thanksgiving Food Drive To help everyone in our St. Johns community celebrate Thanksgiving, the National Junior Honor Society, Web Leaders, Fruit Cove Cares, and B6 club sponsored a school wide food drive. The drive was a tremendous success, collecting over 1300 items! We are so proud of the generosity shown by our school. Thank you so much! All items will be donated to local families in need. Relay for Life Thanks to all who contributed to our Spirit Week fund-raisers for Relay for Life. We collected $1,170.83 in pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills! Thank you for supporting this worthy cause. Front Office Memo Parents: We are unable to accept items such as homework, textbooks, projects, and PE clothes after 8:15 am in the front office. This policy is in place to minimize the interruptions to instructional time. We encourage students to be prepared for school each day by bringing what is needed for the day. Of course, we will always accept lunches, lunch money, medicine, and eyeglasses. Thank you for your cooperation.

The award of $750 is for the project entitled Lunch Bunch Book Club. The grant proposal was submitted by Instructional Literacy Coach, Lori Sisson. The goal of the project is to instill a love of reading, in addition to helping build students self-esteem and positive interactions with peers. The book club(s) will meet once weekly during the lunch period for 8 weeks. More details on the Lunch Bunch Book Club will be coming soon. 8th grade Science The 8 th Grade Science students will be making a Human Periodic Table. They are decorating t-shirts with their unique elements. Projects are due November 30 (A day) and December 3 (B day).

Science Fair Science Fair Projects were due this week for our students. Presentations took place in the classrooms and now the teachers have the arduous job of selecting the projects that will go on to the official school Science Fair. Those projects will be on display for judging Wednesday and open for viewing Thursday and Friday of next week in the Multi-purpose room. Chess Champions Building Security Meet Fruit Cove Middle School s Chess Champions, Advait Kiran and Vasanth Parthasarathy. They participated in a chess competition that was held at Greenwood School in Mandarin. Advait and Vasanth defeated over 50 competitors from all over St. Johns and Duval counties. Advait has been playing for three years and plays in a chess club every Sunday. Vasanth began playing the game 4 months ago and practices everyday. Great job, boys! Parents: In a continuing effort to provide safety and security to our students and staff we ask that you complete a School Access Form if you plan to enter a facility in the St. Johns County School District. The link for the School Access Form and related information can be found at: https:// www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/volunteer/. This includes if you would like to meet with a guidance counselor, teacher, or volunteer for special activities such as the book fair, field trips, school dances or other activities. Any person going beyond the front office area of a school must have a completed school access form, and present a valid driver s license or state identification card when signing into a school. To check your status, contact the school which you wish to enter two weeks after completion of the school access form. It is suggested that the form be completed right away, as it can take two to six weeks to process. Once school access has been granted, a person signs into the school as a volunteer, and chooses the activity that best describes what he/she will be doing in the school. Driver s license and state identification card are required upon each sign in.

2018-2019 Instructional Materials Adoption- Mathematics The St. Johns County School District curriculum department representatives and adoption committee members are currently conducting the review process for the 2018-2019 Instructional Materials Adoption for Mathematics. Resources are available for review at http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/media/instructional-resources-media-services/textbooks/adoption/ by our parents and community members. The core resources that have been submitted for evaluation are listed on the state adoption consideration lists. AP materials that will be reviewed are from College Board recommended materials. If you are interested in serving on an adoption review committee, please contact the principal or assistant principal. Some print materials may be available for review. If you would like access to the available printed materials or require assistance reviewing the online resources, please call the Instructional Resources and Media Services office at 904.547.3947. Materials are available for review from 8:00 AM 4:30 PM when district offices are open. Resource lists may be revised throughout the review process. Please check the website frequently for updates. Please note the following Florida statute regarding instructional materials that pertains to parent input regarding adopted materials: F.S. 1006.28 (1)(a)(3) Each district school board must establish a process by which the parent of a public school student may contest the district school board s adoption of a specific instructional material. The parent must file a petition, on a form provided by the school board, within 30 calendar days after the adoption of the material by the school board. The school board must make the form available to the public and publish the form on the school district s website. The form must be signed by the parent, include the required contact information, and state the objection to the instructional material. Within 30 days after the 30-day period has expired, the school board must conduct at least one open public hearing on all petitions timely received and provide the petitioner written notification of the date and time of the hearing at least 7 days before the hearing. All instructional materials contested must be made accessible online to the public at least 7 days before a public hearing. The school board s decision after convening a hearing is final and not subject to further petition or review.
