Radley CE Primary School & Foundation Stage Unit www.radley-pri.oxon.sch.uk OCTOBER NEWSLETTER Dear Parents, October 2018 As I write we are coming to the culmination of what has been a fabulous Art Week at school, which has been very much enjoyed by both children and staff alike. Co-ordinated by Mrs Sparks, the week has had a Narnian theme, based around C.S Lewis book of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. May I also thank you for your support of your children during Art Week. This has taken many forms - from the materials (and art overalls!) sent into school for the children to use, to those volunteers who have assisted us, and for your support of your children at home on the tremendous pieces of art work they have brought into school. Art Week has also included an opportunity for children to spend time in the Narnian themed Prayer Space. This has taken place in The Church Hut, where the children have seemed to enter the land of Narnia itself. There are more details and pictures of the various activities later in the newsletter. We are now looking forward to our Harvest Festival Service which takes place in St James Church on Wednesday 17th October at 9.15am, and to which you are most cordially welcome to join us. We would be very grateful for any gifts of nonperishable items of food, which will be donated to Abingdon Food Bank. We look forward to seeing you at our Parents Evenings next week, when your child s teacher will have an opportunity to talk with you about your child s progress. Whilst you are in school, we also hope you will enjoy looking at the many different forms of art work created by your children during this week. I also write to let you know that the Parish Council are looking to fund the appointment of a temporary road crossing patrol person for the beginning and end of the school day. There are further details about this later in the newsletter and, should you know of anyone who might be interested in applying for this position, I would be grateful if you would let them know. Thank you. Finally, as I finish, may I remind you that the school will not be open for children on Friday 19 October prior to the Half Term holiday, because of a staff training day. With my best wishes, Grace Slater Headteacher

Thames Class Y6 Parents Parents can now submit online applications for children to transfer from primary to secondary school for Year 7 entry in September 2019. Parents should apply direct at: www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/secondaryadmissions Parents unable or unwilling to apply online, can complete the secondary application form by hand, this should then be posted recorded delivery to the Admissions Team or hand delivered to County Hall. Please ask the school office for a form. Parents are advised to apply online where possible as this is the most secure method of applying. The deadline for receipt of completed applications, online or on paper, is 31 October 2018. Places will be confirmed on 1 st March 2019. Sports News Multi Sports Event On Wednesday 25 th September, Year 2 from Cherwell class were invited to attend a Multi Sports Event at Thomas Reade School. During the morning, the class had 40 minute taster sessions in Tennis, Golf and Martial Arts. The children had a great time and were very enthusiastic in trying new sports. Abingdon Primary School Cross Country Competition On Thursday 4 th October Team Radley went to Tilsley Park to take part in the Abingdon Primary Schools Cross County competition, together with 15 other local schools. During the PE lessons in the last 3 weeks, trials have been taking place to select 2 teams from Isis and Thames class. 8 children from Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 represented the school. Well done to everyone who took part especially the girls teams who have got through to the Vale Finals. Thank you to all the parents who have helped to transport the children to these events. I could not enter the competitions without your support. Mrs Yates PE Co-Ordinator

Art Week We have been delighted by the children s energy and enthusiasm embracing our whole school Narnia themed Art Week. As the doors opened on Monday, children arrived ready for a busy week of creating and making, many having brought in their own impressive work inspired by famous artists, designers or architects. Monday was a whirlwind of activity with each class enjoying a hands on workshop delivered by visiting artist, Peter Swidrak. A range of materials and techniques were experienced throughout the year groups and each class engaged with a variety of artwork by famous artists. Isis and Cherwell classes also enjoyed tours around the Radley College Art Gallery and Art Department, where they took part in a scavenger hunt. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we enjoyed mixed group activities where children spent time in their Houses. Activities included: Narnia character sculpting; water colour Aslan; wintery Narnia; and What s through the wardrobe multimedia. During these sessions, children were also invited to contribute to our Whole School collaborative Aslan, who will proudly display our school values of Relationships, Resilience and Respect. Thames Class then enjoyed their tour of the Radley College Design and Technology and Art Departments on Wednesday afternoon. To complete our themed week, each class was invited to spend time in the Narnia themed Prayer Space, located in the Church Hut. This provided a welcome opportunity for peace and reflection. Following a creative and productive week, we have one final treat Radley Primary s very own Narnia, in part of our Forest School area. This has been lovingly created by the FSU team, with the work of the children, and they have kindly invited each class the opportunity to visit it early next week. During your visits next week to Parents evenings, we invite you to have a good look at the displays of the children s creative efforts, which will be in the main reception area and throughout the school corridors. An enormous thank you to all our parent volunteers throughout the week and to the Radley College Art and DT Departments for their generous contribution of time, resources and creative energies. This has really been a week of community efforts. Heather Sparks Art Co-ordinator
