CHASE GRAMMAR SCHOOL & INTERNATIONAL STUDY CENTRE Formerly CHASE ACADEMY

Chase Grammar School is a modern, day and boarding school with an on-site day nursery. We cater for all aspects of child care and education from infancy to A Level. Since 1979 it has provided high quality independent education at an affordable price to the families of Cannock and beyond. Class sizes are small, so that teachers can teach, and pupils can learn. This results in high expectations and a high standard of academic success; the school is very proud of its examination results, which are among the very best in the country. While there is a Christian ethos we welcome children of all faiths. Our International Study Centre lends an exciting cosmopolitan air to the site, especially important given the growth of the global community. Our main criteria for admission to the school is that a child will be able to thrive at the school and become a good member of the community. The only examinations for entry are for the award of scholarships. Normally, we ask a child to spend a day with us at school, so that pupil, parents and school can then make an informed decision about entry. Our aim is to help children develop in as many directions as possible, to encourage excellence, and prepare them for their role beyond school. School Welcome Any prospectus can only hint at the real school. Please come and visit us, and meet some of our staff and pupils.

Family The Preparatory School With pupils from aged 3 to 11, the Prep School, in its self-contained building in the heart of the school, is a hive of industry. Pupils are encouraged to develop key skills such as concentration and self discipline, but there is also time to enjoy the many opportunities for sport, music, art and dance. In the Junior Department, Numeracy and Literacy are key subjects, but pupils use these strong foundations to broaden their horizons, including new areas such as Information Technology and French. A Large Family In the Nursery and Infant Departments, there is a steady transition from play-centred to more structured learning. All years are taught in small classes by their Form Teacher, who thus knows the pupils very well; specialist teachers from the Senior School ease the transition from the Prep School by teaching certain subject specific skills.

Academic The Senior School In the Senior School attention is given to providing an individual curriculum for every child but once again competence in Literacy and Mathematics are our primary focus. In Mathematics weaker pupils have extra lessons and abler mathematicians are rapidly accelerated. All pupils take GCSE Mathematics two years early in Year Nine. Our grammar stream pupils can expect A* grades at this stage and they continue by achieving Maths (or even Further Maths) at A Level, by the end of Year Eleven. This then allows more subjects to be studied in the Sixth Form. Literacy skills are developed in all subjects. All pupils take GCSE English Language in Year Ten a consequence of the keen focus on basic skills. All pupils take Latin and French in Year Seven and able pupils add German in Year Eight with Greek as a further option for our grammar stream. The well established accelerated Science course ensures that more than half the year group complete their GCSEs in separate Sciences in Year Ten enabling them to follow the Physics, Chemistry and Biology IGCSE course in Year Eleven an excellent preparation for A Level. In addition to the core subjects, pupils study a range of Humanities subjects. This is supported by creative arts such as Design Technology, Music and Art. All pupils have a full Games afternoon each week, and the opportunity to represent the school in some capacity. At GCSE, pupils make choices outside the core of English, Mathematics, Science and Languages, with subjects such as Sports Science, Business Studies and Drama entering the curriculum. As an independent school, we can design a curriculum between ages 3 to 18 in which we firmly believe. We are not tightly bound by the National Curriculum, SATS, or other elements of educational fashion.

Inde endence The Sixth Form As young adults, the school looks to help Sixth Formers to become independent learners who will thrive at University. At A Level, there is a wide choice of up to 20 subjects. All pupils are encouraged to take a good deal of personal responsibility for their study, and nearly all go on to the university of their choice. Classes at this level are small, and there is a large amount of seminar and tutorial work. In addition to academic work, Sixth Formers play a very full role in the life of the school. There is a well-resourced Sixth Form Common Room for relaxation and informal working. In the family tradition of the school, Sixth Formers volunteer to look after younger pupils. There are many opportunities to develop the skills of leadership, and a number of senior pupils are chosen each year as Prefects to support the Head Boy or Girl. Experienced staff and Sixth Form Tutors provide good quality career guidance and university application advice. Preparing for University

Visitors frequently comment on the special, family atmosphere of our school. As a relatively small school, with around 300 pupils, we understand the great importance of each member of our community. Each pupil s progress is monitored by a Form Tutor, who is the first point of contact with home; our Tutors are highly skilled and experienced, and take responsibility for, and personal interest in, their tutees development. Each Form has a formal parents meeting at least once each year, with opportunities for informal discussion commonplace. Detailed reports are provided at the end of each term. Pupils participate in pastoral lessons where they study elements of Personal, Social and Health Education, and attend regular assemblies where moral and spiritual issues are discussed. It is important to us that our pupils also learn the value of service to others; there is much charity work undertaken, and older pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for the young members of the community. Community Care for the Individual

Creative Arts Pupils are given exposure to Music and Art from Nursery, and then move on to experience Design Technology, Drama and Dance. The Music School offers excellent facilities and allows the large number of visiting specialists to give individual instrumental tuition. The department produces regular concerts, including a Charity Concert, as well as many Orchestra, Choir, and church performances. School productions are frequent, ranging from Prep School plays to spectacular whole school musicals. In addition to this Drama GCSE as an extra curricular subject has been a great success. The Design Technology and Art Department are housed alongside each other in light and well laid out rooms to allow links between the departments to be developed. The rooms provide considerable opportunity for the exhibition of pupils work but the work is impressive and therefore it is to be found displayed around the school. The school is proud of its reputation for excellence in the Creative Arts.

Sport Games and Physical Education Pupils have PE lessons up to Year 9, and Games afternoons throughout the age range. Physical Education is also available as a GCSE and A Level course. The school competes successfully in a full fixture list with other schools. Girls play Hockey, Netball, Rounders and Tennis. Boys play Football, Hockey and Cricket. The school also has teams for Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. Chase Grammar School is a partner with Cannock Cricket and Hockey Club, and uses the extensive facilities at the hugely impressive Chase Park, a 5 minute journey in the school s minibuses. Children are taught by our well qualified PE staff and by professional coaches. The school has its own full size Sports Hall, with facilities for Badminton, Basketball, Tennis, Gymnastics, Indoor Soccer and Hockey...A Healthy Body

Outside Lessons There is so much to do outside lessons at Chase Grammar School: after school clubs include all manner of activities, including various sports, chess, computing, art, music and drama. The lively House system offers inter-house competition in sport, music and debating as well as the merit awards. The three Houses are named Helvellyn, Langdale and Scafell The Duke of Edinburgh's award is offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels and is both popular and successful. There are numerous local trips, social, academic and theatrical, and recent years have seen ski trips to Austria, activity holidays across the UK and overseas visits to Italy and France. Pupils using our extensive transport network can also do their homework at school while awaiting the departure of their school bus. After school care is available to allow working parents the opportunity to collect children at later times. A Full and Purposeful

Home Boarding Life is thriving The well appointed boarding houses are home to pupils from the age of 11, and are also the family homes of a number of members of staff. Most pupils have individual or twin bedrooms while some younger pupils share in small groups. Pupils whose first language is not English have language lessons tailored to their individual needs. Boarding staff are experienced and well trained. They work as a team to provide the best possible care for our boarders. There is a school Doctor, and a resident Matron. Boarding pupils have full access to the facilities in the evenings, including the IT room, the Music and Art Departments, and the Sports Hall. There is a regular and incredibly wide programme of trips, both local and national. The pupils have the opportunity to suggest and influence any other activities through the Boarding Council. During half term holidays, pupils can stay in school under the school s own Guardianship Service.... A Home From Home
