St. Pius X School Philosophy Students at St. Pius X School learn in a Catholic educational environment. Their education and formation is student-centered to encompass spiritual, academic, psychological, social, cultural, and physical growth. This is the top priority of the administration, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians. Students from various cultural backgrounds learn to know, love, and serve God and to see themselves and others as special persons created in God s image, loved and cherished by God, and therefore, to view themselves as unique individuals of great dignity and worth. Our students develop a desire for prayer, reflection, and reverence for all creation, and they take advantage of provided opportunities to share the Good News, to build Christian community and to be of service to others. St. Pius X students learn to bear witness to Christ and to His values through their interactions with others. Students at St. Pius X School learn that God loves everyone and that a loving response to God leads to a more fulfilling life. They work to live out the parish motto of our patron, Pope St. Pius X, to restore all things in Christ. Students work to achieve mastery of basic skills. They do so using a variety of materials and techniques which incorporate different learning styles and multiple intelligences to develop effective skills in creative and critical thinking, in decision-making, in problem solving, and in making moral choices. Students build on their learning to prepare themselves for higher education and their future roles as Catholic/Christian members of an ever- changing world, under the direction of teachers, and staff, and in cooperation with parents. Mindful of the lifelong learning process, our students become life learners who integrate Catholic truths, and values into their daily lives, as they work for justice and peace as vibrant members of family, school, church, and global communities. The administration, faculty, and staff at St. Pius X School, in partnership with the parents who are the primary educators of their children, are committed to assisting students in developing their full potential. St. Pius X School Mission Statement The mission of St. Pius X School is to provide a Christ-Centered educational environment, which is student- focused. We strive to provide a quality education that allows each student to: Have a deeper relationship with God Improve academic achievement Develop physically Grow socially Mature emotionally At St. Pius X School, we work with our students so that they become lifelong learners who integrate Catholic truths and values into their daily lives. We strive to help them to 2

become vibrant members of family, school, church, and global communities and to work cooperatively to restore all things in Christ. Requirements for Admissions Assessments Registration forms for the next school year will be available on the 1 st day after St. Pius X School Christmas vacation (1/5/2018). It is important to complete this paperwork as close to the opening day as possible. Families with children listed on the form are invited to test, but this is not a guarantee of a position in the school. Grades 1-8 testing will be on Monday, March (3/5/2018) at 3:00 PM and there is a fee of $30.00. Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten assessments are scheduled individually. All new students will be placed on academic and conduct probation for one semester. New students entering grades 4 through 8 are required to attend the after school tutoring program at least twice a week the first quarter. The tutoring program is offered Monday through Thursday from 3:00-3:30 p.m. Administrator s exceptions may be made for accepting incoming 8 th graders. Age policy for Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten & 1 st grade - A child must be 4 1/2 years of age by September 1 st to be admitted to Transitional Kindergarten, a child must be 5 years of age by September 1 st to be admitted to Kindergarten. A child must be 6 years of age by September 1 st to be admitted to grade 1. Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Admission A child entering Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten must meet the age requirement above and be tested by the school for developmental readiness. The school will determine readiness on an individual basis. If a child shows significant readiness, the principal may meet with the parents and teacher to discuss the possibility of enrollment if the above-mentioned age requirement is a factor. St. Pius X School will use a standardized screening process that is approved by the Diocesan office. The assessment will be administered by a qualified tester appointed by St. Pius X School at our school site. The results of this assessment will be the basis used to determine: development readiness and acceptance into St. Pius X School kindergarten program, if a child meets the above stated age & readiness requirements. (For your information, we use the Gesell test of developmental readiness for St. Pius X School Kindergarten. These specific results, plus the age of the child, are the criteria we use for placement in our Kindergarten. Assessments from other schools are not accepted.) Health and Immunizations St. Pius X School also complies with the California law that requires a health checkup for first grade school entry to protect the health of all children. The health checkup can be given anytime during the year and a half (18 months) before your child begins first grade. All immunizations must be up to date for all students. St. Pius X School complies with the California Laws regarding the health and welfare of its students. School entry health checkups are required for all students entering kindergarten/first Grade. The CHDP exam/oral health exam must be completed a year and a half (18 months) prior to or 90 days 3

after year child begins first grade to meet the school entry requirement. Early and regular health checkups can find, prevent and treat many health problems before they become serious. All students entering St. Pius X School must present a current and complete immunization record. The requirements for each grade must comply with the current requirement as stipulated by the California Department of Public health. The immunization record will be reviewed and if any immunizations are missing the parent will be informed. The necessary immunizations will need to be completed before the student is allowed to attend classes. All students entering Grade 7 are required to have a Tdap immunization before starting their 7 th grade year in school. Notices will be sent to parents of students not meeting the requirement in May of their 6 th grade year. The Tdap may be given any time after the 7 th birthday of the student. St. Pius is a food allergy aware campus. We have several students who have been diagnosed with food allergies and we are in the process of setting up school, student and parent guidelines, recognizing this situation. A letter with these guidelines will be sent to all parents and school personnel. Students with a food allergy are encouraged to get a doctor s order and emergency care plan to help at school and use in case of an emergency. School personnel may dispense medication to students only if accompanied by a written doctors order. School personnel will provide a safe place to store this medication in the appropriately labeled prescription container with the student s name, name of the medication, dosage and time the medication is to be given. All continuing medications must be reviewed yearly and expired medications need to be updated regularly. Admission Priority Students who meet the above criteria are placed in the priority below: brother or sister of student presently enrolled in the school family is a verified registered contributing member of St. Pius X Parish date on enrollment form To qualify as a contributing member of St. Pius X Parish, and to receive the reduced tuition rate you: must attend Sunday Mass at St. Pius X Church on a regular basis must use your pink mass attendance cards or your Sunday bulletin from our affiliated FIAT parishes. (Corpus Christi, Mater Dei, Most Precious Blood, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Charles, St. Mary, St. Michael, St. Rose of Lima) Parental Support Parents must agree to actively support the spiritual and academic standards of the school, and to participate in school functions fundraisers and volunteer programs. Because we affirm the role of the parent as primary educators, especially in the area of religious and moral formation, it is essential that families recognize the importance of family prayer and weekly participation in Sunday celebration of the liturgy. Parents need to demonstrate a commitment to the school s philosophy, rules and regulations. Probation for New Students All new students entering grade PS-8 are automatically placed on probation (academic, behavior) for the duration of the first quarter of the school year. At the end of the first quarter of attendance, the 4

teacher(s) involved will meet with the principal to discuss and evaluate the following categories: Extent of student involvement in his/her own learning: class participation, effort, completion of assignments and regular attendance in the after school tutoring program Student s application to study/homework Level of progress Academic standing Responsible behavior, attitude, peer relationships and other areas of concern Parents will receive written notification with the student s first report card regarding probationary status. Probation may be continued due to unsatisfactory marks in one or more of the areas listed above, the principal will request a conference with the student, parents and appropriate teachers. At the end of the first quarter, at the discretion of the Principal, either one of the following will happen: Probation will be discontinued Probation will continue, independent tutoring will be required, closer home supervision will be required, progress at school will be monitored closely, testing, psychological and/or academic, may be requested at this time, to be initiated within 30 days. The principal will assist parents in discerning what is in the best interest of the student. If it is evident to the school educators that the school is unable to meet the student s need, the principal will assist the parent in finding an academic environment more suited to the student, where he/she may be able to experience academic and/or social success.
