714 F Street Eureka, CA 95501 ~Alder Grove News~ November 2018 Telephone: 707-268-0854 Fax: 707-268-0813 Website: www.aldergrovecharter.org Hello Alder Grove Families, My yard is a tangle of spider webs and my family is getting creative with apples and pumpkins. Autumn on the north coast is in full swing! November is always a good month for reflection on gratitude for all of the good things in our lives. I couldn t do my job without the supportive office staff here at AGCS, our enthusiastic teachers, and dedicated students and families! I am thankful for you all. Alder Grove Charter School is unique and strong because of you. Speaking of thankful, a hearty thanks goes out to our CT Brooke Sayre, who organized the Family Maker Night in October. Thanks to all of the awesome volunteers who helped, too! It was a well-attended event, with engaged and excited students working on a variety of projects. We will host more of these events, with the help of the Humboldt County Office of Education, in the future. Keep your eyes open for test prep information as we head into testing season. Stefani Gambrel, our testing coordinator, is working on effective ways to prepare our students for CAASPP testing in the spring. If your student has qualified for academic support, you have probably filled out an Academic Support Form with your CT. It s really important that we all support those students who are working below grade level. Please bring your student to their academic support sessions on campus, or enforce weekly work time in the online programs offered to help students bring their skills up to grade level. Academic success of our students is a huge priority for AGCS. And finally, if you have a student in middle or high school, be sure to read the college and career sections of this newsletter. Jen Burtram has included a lot of information about on and off campus opportunities for our students such as field trips, classes, programs, and other college and career related events. We want to be sure students have a plan for the future as they are working toward graduation. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I hope your November is cozy! Thankfully, Tim Warner, Director Alder Grove students with their creative pumpkins during the K-6th grade Halloween Party Anne-Shirley Harris is this month s featured artist in the Student Art Gallery

Alder Grove is happy to announce that this year we'll be participating in Crayola's marker recycling program. Look for the sign and the collection box in the lobby soon! You are welcomed to drop off any and all used/dried/old markers regardless of what brand/size/shape they are. Feel free to collect them from your friends and family, too! Usually markers become part of the waste stream and end up in landfills, but with this opportunity we can divert them from the trash to be made into something new! If you have any questions, or a LARGE box of markers to drop off, please contact Ami Wruck, 707-834-8965 or ami.wruck@aldergrovecharter.org Be Your Own Boss with Crafting Up Business Students can learn how to be creative making and selling their own creations. And, in the process create income for themselves. It s easy once they dream design develop and DO the steps for success. Alder Grove will have their second annual blood drive on Tuesday November 13th from 10-3. The Bloodmobile will be parked outside and anyone 16 and older are welcome to come donate. Alder Grove is working with Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) to bring Crafting Up Business curriculum to our students. From the ideation process of coming up with their idea all the way through preparing for their selling event on December 21 st (Holiday Craft Party from 3-5 p.m.) your student will have fun learning a real-world experience. Each participating student can table at the Craft Fair to sell their products or offer their services. Crafting Up is designed for Middle School students but the selling event is available to all Alder Grove students.
