KY AHED funds have been made available to Appalachian Kentucky public high schools on a competitive basis to implement expanded strategies for improving access to college for high school students. Programs especially target those individuals who do not consider college to be an option. Funds to schools are used to explore student career interests; inform them about college and financial aid options; and build self-confidence in their ability to succeed in higher education and life. ATTENTION JUNIORS: GOVERNORS SCHOLAR APPLICATION Review Day Thursday, Nov. 17 at 9am Parents are welcome to participate. Final copies must be turned in to Mrs. Walters by December 2. GSA College and Career Readiness Governor s School for the Arts is accepting applications for the summer program. Application deadline is December 31. Students can download an application at www.kentuckygsa.org or pick up a copy in the guidance office. In order to be considered for the 2012 Governor s School for the Arts, you must be a resident of Kentucky and currently be a sophomore or junior in a Kentucky high school or home school. ACT tutoring is available in the computer lab on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15 on the following dates: November 2, 9, 16, 30 December 7 January 4,11, 18, 25 February 1, 8, 29 Rogers Scholar Applications are available for current sophomores. Kim Baldwin from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority will be in the SHS Computer Lab on Tuesday, January 24 from 5:00-7:00pm to assist seniors and their parents with the FAFSA financial aid forms. Page 3 BigSun Scholarship The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in. Deadline: June 22, 2012 Amount of Award : $500.00 The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community.. Any senior who would be the first member of their immediate family (parents, guardians & siblings) to complete a college degree and has an ACT Reading score of at least a 20 could be eligible for a non-renewable $2,500 scholarship from the Kentucky School Boards Association. Please see Mrs. Walters for an application by November 23. Scholarships Available KEES $$$ Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship For each year you earn a 2.5 or better GPA, you can earn the base amount listed below. For instance, a high school freshman who earns a 3.5 GPA would have a $375 scholarship for each year of college. You can earn a bonus award for an ACT score of 15 or above. For example, a KEE eligible student who has a score of 25 would earn an additional $393 for each year of college. The 2012-2013 University of Kentucky Freshman Application is now live! www.applyuk.com We encourage all seniors interested in attending the University of Kentucky next fall to begin the application process now. KFC Colonels Scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for the KFC Colonel s Scholar Program. Awards are up to $20,000. Congratulations Matt King!! Costume for a Cure Matt was selected as the Snappy Tomato SHS Student of the month! He received a free family meal from Snappy Tomato Pizza! November s winner will be named soon. Just get caught being kind and considerate of others and you may be next! On October 28, SHS students participated in Costume for a Cure which was sponsored by the SHS Cheerleaders. Students who paid $1 were given a pink sticker and bracelet to wear to promote breast cancer awareness. The best costumed students were awarded with tickets to the district play off game and a Briar Jumper Football t-shirt. Mrs. Calahan (Flo) was voted by students to be the best costumed teacher. She won a $50 gift certificate to Kentucky State Parks. The cheerleaders will be presenting the funds to the Susan G. Colman Foundation. The Big Smiles Dental program will be available at SHS to do dental work. * Students must have turned in applications at the beginning of school to be eligible. Deadlines for applying: March 1 for priority ranking and awarding of fall 2012 scholarships KRS 159.051 Loss of license or permit Please remember that our school nurse is available to perform school physicals and Kentucky Entrance Exams. Nurse Hall encourages you to schedule these by appointment as a parent must be present. These services are provided at no cost in collaboration with the Resource Center, Somerset Board of Education and the Lake Cumberland Health Department. DRIVE TO PERFECTION When a student age sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) drops out of school or is declared to be academically deficient, the school administrator or his designee shall notify the superintendent of schools of the district in which the student is a resident or is enrolled. The reports shall be made at the end of each semester but may be made earlier in the semester for accumulated absences. A student shall be deemed to have dropped out of school when he has nine (9) or more unexcused absences in the preceding semester. Any absences due to suspension shall be unexcused absences. A student shall be deemed to be academically deficient when he has not received passing grades in at least four (4/6) courses, or 5/7 courses in the preceding semester. SHS is partnering with Don Franklin Motors in the Chevy Drive for Perfection. Any senior that completes the school year with 98% perfect attendance (no more than 3 ½ days) with NO UNEX- CUSED absences will be eligible for a drawing at the end of the year to win a brand new Chevrolet.
