Royal Russell Junior School Bulletin Autumn Term 2018

Dear Parents, Open Day seems an awfully long time ago and yet the memories of a buzzing school, full of a record number of visitors is still very fresh. Our Year 5 & 6 guides did a superb job all morning and were unanimously given outstanding feedback by our visitors. My grateful thanks to all who helped make the day such a success. During assembly on Monday I was extolling the virtues of team work to the children using the example of getting over a physical barrier such as a wall. The Great Wall of China, Hadrian s Wall, The Western Wall and The Berlin Wall were all used as examples and congratulations to Emily in Y6 and Michael in Year 4 who were the only pupils able to identify Hadrian s Wall and The Berlin Wall respectively. Year 2 enjoyed a very informative and exciting trip to the London Aquarium on Tuesday. They travelled by public transport to the aquarium which was an adventure in itself and I am delighted to report that they coped admirably with the challenge. My thanks to the Year 2 team and the parent helpers for supporting the trip. I have spent the last couple of days at the IAPS Heads Annual Conference in Wales where amongst other things I attended a fascinating talk from the Headmaster of Bootham School in York on Mental Health and Wellbeing. Bootham is a Quaker School and they have been running a very successful programme there for the last few years that started with inspiration from Martin Seligman and his ground breaking work on positive psychology. The main reason for my fascination with the talk was that they continually used the language of our very own Russell Powers and so it was good to see that once again RRJS is ahead of the game! One of his other suggestions to improve wellbeing was not to send or answers emails from work between the hours of 7pm and 7am.watch this space for further development! Having been away with 350 other heads it is always fantastic to return to school, to hear the pupils voices and to catch up with the news of the last few days. Thank you to the team back at base who have, as always managed the school so well in my physical absence. Good luck to all those taking part in the U9 and U10 Football Festivals tomorrow at St George s Weybridge and Caterham. Best wishes. Mr James C Thompson

An Evening with Johnny Ball Tuesday 9 October, 7.00pm, Auditorium TV presenter, Johnny Ball will be talking in our Auditorium about his latest book, "Wonders Beyond Numbers - A Brief History of all things Mathematical". It is most suited for pupils in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8, although other children, and parents, may enjoy it. Johnny will begin his talk at 7.00pm, followed by a Q&A session and a book signing with photo opportunity. Johnny Ball has been entertaining for 60 years, 12 in Stand Up, 51 in TV, 38 in Education. He is best known for his award winning TV shows, of which he wrote and presented, including: Think of a Number, Think Again and Johnny Ball Reveals All, which inspired a generation towards confidence in mathematics and science. He was the oldest ever Contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2012. He has produced and presented many award winning videos, educational, promotional and motivational projects. There will be two books available for pre-order and have signed during the evening. 15.00 Johnny slowly unravels the tale of how humanity built up a knowledge and understanding of shapes, numbers and patterns from ancient times, a story that leads directly to the technological wonderland we live in today. As Galileo said, 'Everything in the universe is written in the language of mathematics', and Wonders Beyond Numbers is your guide to this language. Enriched with tales of colourful personalities and remarkable discoveries, there is also plenty of mathematics for keen readers to get stuck into. Written in Johnny Ball's characteristically light-hearted and engaging style, this book is packed with historical insight and mathematical marvels; join Johnny and uncover the wonders found beyond the numbers. 7.50 Let your child join Johnny Ball on a dazzling maths adventure to infinity and beyond. They'll find out maths isn't just about sums and calculations, but how numbers can take them anywhere! Watch as they learn to test their friends with magic tricks, discover mind-reading techniques and find out about the simple puzzles that stumped the world's brainiest mathematicians for centuries. Tickets are free, but booking is essential as seats are limited. Please secure your tickets by completing the booking form

Royal Russell Junior Sports The year 3 boys enjoyed their first taste of tournament football on Saturday. There was some exceptional team work and enthusiasm all round with some superb goals being scored. The A team won all of their games without conceding a goal. The Stars and the Storm both grabbed some goals and victories.

The Y3 girls had their first taste of netball matches after some fun warm up games on open morning. The matches were a great chance to learn some new skills. The U8A team obviously learnt a lot as they went onto win their first real match against Old Palace 3-1 on Monday! Well done to everyone, a great fun morning.

Ellie took her ABRSM Grade 2 Piano exam at the end of the summer term and passed with Merit. Well done Ellie!

Thanks to everyone for making Jeans 4 Genes such a success this year with both your kind donations and those from the children! We have now counted up all of the money and this year we raised... 408.85! But that's not all because with all of your generous Gift Aid donations factored in, the actual total is... 425.85! All of these donations will go towards providing nursing care, equipment, activity weekends, online support and counselling for children with genetic disorders.
