Mathematics and Computing Faculty The Mathematics Department is a successful and forward-looking curriculum area which has an excellent record of examination results at both GCSE and Advanced Level. The subject is popular in the sixth form, with around one third of the year group choosing to study mathematics at A-Level and some girls also study Further Maths at A-Level. The examining board at both GCSE and A-Level is currently Edexcel, however in September 2015 GCSE students we will be moving to AQA GCSE. The A-Level syllabus includes Pure Maths, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths. The department is staffed by six dedicated specialists who have embraced change whilst striving for excellence to raise standards and improve the quality of teaching and learning. Departmental administration and Teaching and Learning embrace the use of IT and students are encouraged to use IT to support their learning at home through a well-populated VLE. Teaching groups are organised according to ability with regular testing allowing movement between groups as and when appropriate. Both formal and informal assessments are used to monitor progress and extra support is offered outside of timetabled lessons. The more able girls are encouraged to participate in the UKMT Maths Challenges, Team Challenges, Masterclasses and Maths competitions. A variety of enrichment and revision classes are provided to prepare students for examinations and challenge activities. We also offer Further Maths GCSE as enrichment. Examination results at both KS4 and KS5 are excellent and consistently above national benchmarks. In 2014 at A-Level 60% of all students achieved A*- B to grades, while at GCSE the pass rate was 100% with 85% achieving A*- C and 21% achieving A*- A. The subject is well resourced and digital technology, including interactive whiteboards, is embedded in curriculum delivery. There are a range of ICT resources which are bookable by staff to support teaching and learning. All of the maths teachers are experienced and well qualified subject specialists. The Computing and Business Studies Department is a developing department which has introduced GCSE Computer Science from September 2014. At KS3 all students study Digital Literacy during which they cover ICT skills, basic programming and e-safety. At KS4 we offer Edexcel ICT; AQA Computer Science and AQA Business Studies. We currently offer A Level ICT (Welsh Board)and Business Studies (AQA). We would like to offer Computer Science at KS5 in the near future.
