For Immediate Release May 24, 2013 Volusia FCAT Writing Scores Released DELAND-- The School District of Volusia County's 2013 FCAT Writing results were released today. The test is administered to students in grades 4, 8 and 10 to assess on-demand writing proficiency. Scores are reported for all curriculum groups and cannot be used to predict school grades. Making direct comparisons from year to year is challenging, as writing prompts and other factors change over time. This year, there changes in the FCAT 2.0 scoring and test administration. First, the cut score used to calculate school grades and identify students performing at grade level expectation was increased from 3.0 to 3.5. There is no passing score for FCAT 2.0 Writing. Students receive scores on a 1 to 6 point scale. Second, students were given an additional 15 minutes to complete their response to the writing prompt. Grade 4 Percentage of students scoring 3.5 or higher increased from 41% to 50% 54% 58% Grade 8 Percentage of students scoring 3.5 or higher increased from 52% to Grade 10 Percentage of students scoring 3.5 or higher increased from 55% to "We are pleased with the increased percentage of students meeting or exceeding proficiency at all grade levels, said Superintendent Dr. Margaret Smith. Elementary schools equaled the state by increasing 9 percentage points, middle schools equaled the state by increasing 2 percentage points, and high schools closed the achievement gap by increasing 3 percentage points, whereas the state average increased by 2 percentage points. Volusia students are writing better and we will build on their work this year for further improvement.
