What you need to know about the IB MYP

How is a school authorized and reviewed?

An Educational Program for: ALL STUDENTS in Grades 5-8; not just honors students Advanced Professional Development for Teachers Team Approach / Interdisciplinary Work Vertical Alignment of Curriculum Incorporates Faith and our Diocesan Curriculum

Our children will not always be children how can we prepare them for lifelong growth?

IB learner profile The Attributes integrate well with our Catholicity. Students are introduced to the Learner Profile at LCA in Preschool. The Learner Profile provides continuous opportunities for growth. As IB learners we strive to be: inquirers knowledgeable thinkers communicators principled open-minded caring risk-takers balanced reflective

Our children will not always have teachers how will we prepare them for lifelong learning?

Approaches to Learning Skills ATL Skills fall under five main categories: Communication, social, self-management, research, thinking. Teachers will explicitly plan learning experiences that foster growth in these categories. The objective is for students to develop skills that will gradually help them take control of their learning. By focusing on ATL skills at a young age, students will begin to develop learning behaviors that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Approaches to Learning As teachers begin to transition to using the MYP Unit Planner, they will target growth in specific ATL skill categories during each unit of inquiry. Additionally, teams have chosen one skill per grade which will serve as a common growth goal throughout the school year. Fifth Grade: Self-management Sixth Grade: Communication Seventh Grade: Research Eighth Grade: Thinking

The transition to MYP will be gradual. What to expect this year: THE ACTIVE CLASSROOM

Learning Experiences Emphasized De-Emphasized Inquiry Discussion Analysis Critique and defense of work Critical thinking Investigation Projects Performance based assessments Passive note-taking Direct Instruction Teacher as expert Multiple choice tests

Examples of MYP related changes and lessons already in place PE and Health is one class and is one of eight core subjects. This elevates its status and recognizes the importance of physical, emotional, and intellectual health on the whole child. Students experience language immersion in Spanish and French class. Two math teachers are piloting the Harkness discussion method which calls for student leadership, critical thinking, presentation and reflection. Individuals & Societies (Social Studies) teachers are modifying the way in which students gather factual information. Teachers are meeting twice per week in grade bands to create MYP units of inquiry and to reflect upon and improve their practice. Students have been introduced to the Learner Profile and will continue to reflect on the attributes in all classes.

How can I help my child? As a family, commit to a growth mindset. Praise effort and open-mindedness rather than perfection in academic endeavors. Exemplify the attributes of a lifelong learner. Reflect upon and discuss the Learner Profile attributes. Investigate the wider world with your child. Help your child be rested and ready to learn each day.

How can I help LCA? Support our teachers as they grow in this professionally demanding role. Recognize that change is challenging. However, engaging in this process of change will have a beneficial impact on the whole school, our teachers, and the quality of student learning. Please pray for us. If we keep our focus on doing what is best for each and every child, God will surely be with us.
