2 Welcome The School of Business and Law (SBL) at Edith Cowan University is very pleased to welcome you to the 2016 ECU Business Doctoral and Emerging Scholars Colloquium. This colloquium provides an opportunity for doctoral students and early career researchers (ECRs) to discuss and share their ideas and approaches with peers and leading academics within the broad field of business. Participants this year have come from a range of disciplines encompassing: human resource management, small medium enterprises, consumer relationships, innovation, accounting and financial markets, to name a few. We are also honoured to have three distinguished keynote speakers: Dr Charles Hampden-Turner and Associate Professor Foo Maw Der who have travelled to Perth for this colloquium to join Professor Pi-Shen Seet. They will provide some insights into charting and building an academic career. Research at SBL has been energised this year with a number of new professors and senior academics joining us, a wave of collaborative activities to support researchers and students, and a number of new students commencing their degrees. The colloquium will wrap up an eventful year in our constant pursuit to extend the boundaries of knowledge. We hope you enjoy your time with us at the colloquium. Associate Professor Hadrian Djajadikerta Associate Dean of Research ECU has been named the Times Higher Education (THE) 150 under 50 rankings for Recognising the world s 150 best universities less than 50 years of age, the rankings are a global showcase or a new breed of university. They focus on performance indicators such as research, teaching excellence international outlook and innovation, and highlight universities that are developing at an exceptional rate. ECU is proud to be recognised for its research productivity, research influence, quality of teaching, industry innovation and international focus. 3 Keynote Speakers Dr Charles Hampden-Turner What it means to be a researcher Charles Hamden-Turner is a management philosopher and the creator of Dilemma Theory. He is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and received his MBA and DBA from Harvard University. He is a co-founder of Trompenaars-Hampden-Turner, an Amsterdam based consultancy in cross-cultural communication. Charles has written and co-authored more than 20 books including Maps of the Mind, Riding the Waves of Culture, and most recently, Nine Visions of Capitalism: Unlocking the Meanings of Wealth Creation. He has researched at London Business School, Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts has won the Douglas McGregor Memorial Award and a recipient of the Guggenheim and Rockefeller fellowships. Professor Pi-Shen Seet Strategies to build and academic career Pi-Shen Seet is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Edith Cowan University s School of Business and Law. Having graduated from Oxford University with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics, he went onto complete his doctorate at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. He has held positions at Flinders University and the University of Adelaide, where he engages in collaborative research with the Family Business Education Research Group. Pi-Shen currently researches in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, international business and human resource management. He is currently leading an industry research project funded by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), examining the impact of disruptive technologies on skills and training in Australia. Associate Professor Foo Maw Der Publish successfully in quality peer-reviewed journals Foo Maw Der is the Acting Head of the Division of Engineering and Technology Management, at the National University of Singapore. He holds a PhD in Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also an Honorary Professor at both Jilin University and Nankai University. His research uses management concepts to understand entrepreneurial processes in technology start-ups. Past projects have delved into cognition, teams, and emotions and how these processes impact individual well-being, team functioning, and venture success. Maw Der is the editor of Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, and is on the editorial review boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Perspectives, Journal of Business Venturing, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. His interest in fair and sustainably business practices engages him to serve on the CaseTrust Advisory Council, NUS-DBS Social Venture Challenge Asia, the Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy, and the Annual Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship Conference. 2

8 Research at the School of Business and Law The School of Business and Law at ECU is proud of its research achievements and is committed to continuing its high quality and innovative applied research. This approach ensures research in areas of relevance and the application of research results for meaningful impact in the community.
