2 MASTER IN ECONOMICS Program Overview MEI is a one-year program designed to provide the analytical and quantitative skills needed for a successful career as a professional economist in business or government. The program is also designed to provide intensive training to students who want to pursue a PhD in Economics, Econometrics or Finance in a leading research university. The program is entirely in English and the student body is very international. Structure of the Program First Term (September-January): Review courses in Mathematics and Statistics; Core courses in Econometrics, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics. Second Term (February-June): Selected courses from three areas of specialization offered by MEI: Monetary and Financial Economics; Public Economics and Regulation; Quantitative Methods for Economics and Finance. Summer Term (July-September): An internship or a project, with a final report due by the end of September.

3 MEI Areas of Specialization Monetary and Financial Economics It aims at training experts in the areas of banking, financial intermediation, and insurance. Teaching focuses on the main tools to understand the bank-business relationships, credit risk evaluation, portfolio choice and derivatives, and the efficiency of financial and insurance markets. Public Economics and Regulation It aims at training specialists in the economics of public policies, with a particular focus on regulation. Teaching covers the foundations, contents and instruments of government intervention in the economy. Particular emphasis is given to governance, competition and regulation of markets, public goods, the environment, and growth and investment policies. Quantitative Methods for Economics and Finance It aims at training expert users of economic and financial data by emphasizing the interaction between economic modeling, data and econometric methodology. This area is of special interest to those who want to pursue a career in institutions that require advanced analytical skills, or to those who want to strengthen their background in order to pursue a PhD in Economics, Econometrics or Finance.

4 Admission Applications for admission must be sent to the MEI s Office along with the following documents: Curriculum vitae Official transcripts Two letters of recommendation Statement of professional goals GRE-General Part (strongly recommended) TOEFL or similar certificate of proficiency in English The deadline for application is June 10. Tuition fees are to be paid in two equal installments, the first due on admission. Financial aid is available in the form of total or partial refund of the tuition fees to the best students in the program. Placement MEI has an excellent track-record in placing students in both academic and non-academic institutions. In the last three years about 60% of our students have been enrolled in PhD programs in top U.S. or European universities, while about 40% have found jobs in non-academic institutions in Italy or abroad. Internships Internships are mostly in Rome. 5 PHD IN ECONOMETRICS AND EMPIRICAL ECONOMICS Program Overview The PhD program in Econometrics and Empirical Economics provides advanced specialization in Econometrics, Applied Economics and Empirical Finance to students whose goal is a successful career in a research-oriented organization. The program is entirely in English and brings together students from all over the world in a stimulating research-oriented environment. Students are chosen through a highly competitive selection process. About half of the students receive tuition waiver and a 3-year scholarship. An Italian language course is available in the Fall Term for foreign students enrolled in the program in order to better prepare them for living in Italy. Students are guided through the program under the close supervision of the Faculty Board. Cooperation and joint research with Faculty members and fellow students are strongly encouraged. After their first year, students are also encouraged to spend one semester abroad, taking advantage of the relationships that the program maintains with leading research universities.

6 Students in the program have a substantial record of publications in top scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Econometrics, the Journal of Economic Theory, the Journal of Time Series Analysis, Health Economics, Economics Letters, Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, and Empirical Economics. Structure of the Program In the first year, students undertake an intensive coursework. In particular, students without a suitable Master's degree are required to attend the courses offered within the Quantitative Methods area of the Master in Economics (MEI), especially those in the fields of Macroeconometrics, Microeconometrics, and Mathematical Statistics. In the second year, students are required to attend the weekly research seminars in Economics and Econometrics, the Econometrics reading group, and the advanced courses taught by members of the Faculty and by international visitors. At the end of the Fall and the Spring Terms, the Faculty Board evaluates the progress made by each student. In the Summer Term, students are expected to start working on their dissertation. In the third year, PhD candidates focus on their doctoral dissertation. Dissertation topics span a wide range of issues, both theoretical and applied. The dissertation is expected to consist of an original and significant contribution to the chosen field of specialization.

If this is not feasible, interviews may be carried out via Skype. Final admission decisions are usually made by the end of June. Placement Our PhD students have found jobs in both academic and non-academic institutions, in Italy and abroad. Some of our former students hold academic positions at Carnegie Mellon University (USA), Duke University (USA), Arizona State University (USA), Maastricht University (The Netherlands) and the University of Westminster (UK).
