MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER, DEVONSHIRE AREA Happy New Year to all, Beverly and I would like to thank our Devonshire Community for the partnership we have embraced this past year. Your support has been instrumental in helping us community police our neighborhoods; assist with solving crimes; supporting events such as our Open House, National Night Out, annual PALS Toy Drive, to name a few; our volunteer support group programs; and our SOLID partners for the completion of our Senior Lead/Community Relations trailer, as well as our Narcotics/Gangs trailer. As we move forward in 2016, I look forward to building a stronger partnership and ask the community to look at ways that we can make our community a safer place to live. Please contact your Senior Lead Officer if you wish to arrange a start-up Neighborhood Watch meeting or have questions about crime prevention tips at (818) If you are interested in some of our Volunteer Programs contact Officer Mark Blizzard at (818) During the month of December, there were several events organized by our Senior Lead Officers, our PALS Officers, Cadet Officers, our Chaplain Ken Crawford and the community, such as the Porter Ranch Gas Leak Meetings, the El Nino Town Hall Meeting, Granada Hills Holiday Parade, PALS Toy Drive, Chatsworth Holiday Parade, the Viking Food Basket Give- Away, Community Clean-up event near the Odyssey Restaurant, and an Interfaith Candle Light Vigil for the San Bernardino Victims. It was a very busy month to say the least, but very successful for each cause. Thank you to all who participated! Our upcoming event in January: On Thursday, January 21st, Coffee with the Captain, at the Starbucks (first level below Food Court) in the Northridge Fashion Center, 9301 Tampa Avenue, Northridge from 10:00 A.M. 11:30 A.M. For more details, contact your Senior Lead Officers, or monitor our Devonshire Facebook, Nixle and Twitter social media cites. As you read through the highlights by our Senior Lead Officers, please share their messages with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and clergy members. Our partnership between the community and Devonshire Community Police is paramount for the continued success in crime reduction for Devonshire Area. Once again, thank you all for your continued support and how we can better serve the Devonshire Area. 2 Commanding Officer Devonshire Community Police Station BASIC CAR HIGHLIGHTS SLO Supervisor, Sgt. II Jose Torres Direct No.: (818) or Main No.: (818) BASIC CAR AREA 17A23 Senior Lead Officer Daniel Del Valle, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The crime of concern for our area is Grand Theft Auto (GTA). GTA s have been occurring from Rinaldi to Lassen Sts., and Topanga Canyon Blvd. to Corbin Ave. The vehicles are generally stolen in late-evening to early-morning hours. Please let others know of the crime activity that is occurring in the area and report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH AND EVENTS: The Basic Car 17A23 Neighborhood Watch meeting is Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 7:00 P.M., at St. John Eudes Church, 9901 Mason Avenue in Chatsworth. This is our first meeting of the year, so I hope to see you there!!! CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE BIG ONE? The Big One generally refers to a major earthquake, but really it could be any major catastrophe. This is a question we should all ask ourselves, and make sure to plan for the Big One. It s not a question of if, because the reality is a major earthquake or catastrophe will eventually happen. If we prepare ourselves and plan properly, we will do just fine when things are going a bit chaotic. Here are a few tips to consider when making your plans: Escape routes out of your home, and safest area to remain in when catastrophe is occurring; Keep shoes or foot-wear under bed or nearby for broken glass on floor; Shut off your main gas valve; DO NOT LIGHT CANDLES/FIRE (assess damage first before you blow yourself up); Emergency lighting - flashlight w/additional batteries; Clothing stored in backpacks (Backpacks can come in handy later); Nonperishable food and bottled water (3-day s supply is a good start); Portable tent (house or apartment may not be safe); Portable radio and cell phone w/alternate charging capabilities; Alternate meeting location if home destroyed and unsafe area - Out of state family/friend.

BASIC CAR AREA 17A35 Senior Lead Officer Dario Del Core, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: As we approach the closing of 2015, overall Part-1 crime has increased approximately 20% Division-wide compared to In our own Basic Car Area we saw the biggest increases over 2014 in overall Burglaries (269 vs. 178) and Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicle (291 vs. 192). Having said this, it is apparent the unity between residents and law enforcement has been successful in hardening the targets (for criminals) as we have not had a repeat of the heavy concentration of Residential Burglary clusters. Compared to the previous years, there have been fewer residential burglaries this year than experienced in the past. There have been significant arrests made as recent as a few days ago when two suspects were taken into custody after fleeing the scene of a Residential Burglary in the block of Amestoy Ave., in Granada Hills. Thank you for being vigilant in the community. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Neighborhood Watch meeting will be on Tuesday, February 10, 2016 at 7:00 P.M., located at Saint Euphrasia Church, Shoshone Avenue in Granada Hills. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: For those that have time and desire it - it would be quite advantageous to get to know the basics of how your local police station operates: the area of coverage, deployment, most effective reporting procedures, and terminology commonly used in community alert bulletins etc. The reason I say this is because having a basic understanding of these elements will render anyone more effective when trying to address problem locations in the neighborhood, especially when taking the role of spokesperson or block leader for the area. To do this you can simply request a meet with your Senior Lead Officer or initiate a block meeting or attend one of our Cop On The Corner or Coffee with the Captain events and spend a few minutes understanding this valuable information. Safety is everyone s concern and can best be achieved when working together in a synchronized partnership. BASIC CAR AREA 17A49 Senior Lead Officer Janine Angeles, 30392@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ;

CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: Happy New Year! The New Year is a time for making resolutions! How about this year s resolution! To be more active in Neighborhood Watch and to not leave anything in your vehicles! Let s make it tough for the bad guys! The following crime statistics are from January 1 to December 1, These numbers reflect the number of crimes which occurred in Basic Car 17A49 only. There were (103) Grand Theft Autos, (24) Robberies, (190) Thefts, (182) Burglaries, (83) Aggravated Assaults and (269) Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles. The crime in our Basic Car Area is up 30.8% from last year at this time. Be aware of your surroundings! Please report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our first Basic Car Meeting for 2016 will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 7:00P.M. The location will be announced at a later time. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: We have been warned about the El Nino Season so I thought it would be fitting to provide some safety tips to consider. Tips for the Rainy Season (El Nino) - 1. Fix your leaks around your house before it rains; 2. Clean out your rain gutters; 3. Invest in a generator if you are in a neighborhood susceptible to power outages; 4. Consider buying a portable generator or even a permanent standby generator that immediately kicks in if the power goes out; 5. Check your car s tires. Make sure they have the proper amount of tread and that they are inflated to the correct air pressure; -AND- 6. Make sure your car s windshield wipers work; 7. Prepare now! Don t get caught unprepared! Experts agree that the toughest time to find solutions to rain-related issues is during a rainstorm. PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A START UP MEETING! BASIC CAR AREA 17A67 Senior Lead Officer Patti Peteque, 31373@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following Part-1 crime statistics cover the period of January 1, thru December 5, There have been (85) Aggravated Assaults, (195) Burglary/Thefts from Motor Vehicles, (118) Burglaries, (86) Grant Theft Autos, (201) Personal Theft/Other Property, (6) Rapes, and (30) Robberies. Basic Car A67 is currently at 7.9% YTD. The most active crime in this area is Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles. The areas where most of the crimes are occurring continue to be from Plummer St. to Roscoe Blvd. and Tampa to Lindley Aves. Also, there is heavy activity along the Reseda corridor for Thefts, Burglaries and some Vandalism crimes. The Theft crimes are occurring between the hours of 8:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. The B/TFMV crimes are being committed primarily between the hours of 10:00 P.M. 6:00 A.M. Unfortunately, the Vandalism crimes seem to be happening at all hours of the day and night. If you happen to have information on any of the above listed crimes, please DO NOT

hesitate to contact me. I have received video footage depicting some crime activity from certain community members, which has been very helpful in solving some cases. So please keep sharing and caring about our community! NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Basic Car Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 7:00 P.M., located at Calahan Street Elementary School, Knapp Street in Northridge. Hope everyone can attend! CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: Friendly reminder, please be more alert and vigilant over any suspicious activity. Do not hesitate to report a crime in progress immediately!! For Emergency calls dial 911, for non-emergency calls, please call (877) ASK-LAPD or contact the Devonshire station front desk at (818) Please continue to lock and secure your vehicles regardless of where you park. Don t forget to use your alarm or any anti-theft device you may have on you vehicle. This will make it a little more challenging and difficult for the criminals to quickly gain entry into your car. A little delay could mean crime prevention overall. Criminals for the most part want to act out the commission of their crimes quickly to avoid being seen/caught by anyone. Think about how you can prevent being a victim of a crime! There have been a number of packages stolen from the front porch of residences. If you are having UPS/FED- EX packages delivered to your home, consider requesting a signature for delivery, or simply plan on picking your packages directly form UPS/FED-EX or from the Post office facility. DO NOT leave your purses or cell phones unattended while shopping. These items have been easily taken from shopping carts/baskets, store counter tops and from restaurant tables. Please do your part to protect your precious valuables. Best wishes in the New Year 2016! BASIC CAR AREA 17A81 Senior Lead Officer John Parker, 36560@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following Part-1 crime statistics are for Basic Car A81 only from January 1 thru December 12, Under Total Violent Crime we were up 90.0% this year compared to last year. There were (0) Homicides, (9) Rapes, (41) Robberies, and (64) Aggravated Assaults. Under Total Property Crimes we were up 0.2% this year compared to last year. There were (137) Burglaries, (80) Grand Theft Autos, (202) Burglary/Theft from Vehicle, and (496) Personal Theft/Other Theft.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Basic Car meeting will on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 7:00 P.M., at the Garden Christian Fellowship, Nordhoff Street in Chatsworth. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: Since this is the beginning of the New Year, I want everyone to be inspired about doing something that may impact the community you live in, such as starting a Neighborhood Watch Program, volunteering your time with some of the programs at Devonshire Police Station, start a community clean-up or mentoring some of our youth. Your leadership is needed to make our community even better! Crime Tips: Be aware of your surroundings; Do not leave any personal belongings in your vehicle; Cut back shrubs/trees near windows, replace light bulbs for outside lights and have alarm systems (if you have one) inspected before the winter season we generally get many false alarm activations with windy weather; Be aware of Phone Scams and shred important documents you dispose of; Safety Tips: Stay informed with crime websites: Nixle, Crime Mapping, LAPDonline.org, Facebook and Twitter (LAPD); Get involved in a Neighborhood Watch Program or Nextdoor.com; Get involved with some of the programs that keep our community safe: Volunteer Surveillance Team, Volunteer Bike Patrol, Reserve Officer, Community Police Advisory Board, California Emergency Mobile Patrol, Community Police Academy, Cadet Program or Police Activity League Service; and Prepare for El Nino: Clean gutters; repair roof if damaged or leaking; seal leaks near windows/doors; purchase Flood Insurance now if in flood zone; replace worn vehicle tires and windshield wipers. I m starting a new tradition in 2016 by having a quote per month for inspiration: Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together. Paul Ryan BASIC CAR AREA 17A95 Senior Lead Officer Efren Corral, 35472@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following crime statistics are for November 1, to November 28, We had (13) Burglaries, (5) GTA s (Grand Theft Autos), and (20) BTFV s (Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicle), (1) Robbery, (17) Thefts, and (5) Aggravated Assaults. Our major concern is the increase in cars getting broken into. This crime can be easily avoided, please remember to - Lock it, Hide it, Keep it.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Basic Car meeting will be on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 7:00 The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, located at Plummer Street in Northridge. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: Here are a few New Years Resolutions for 2016: Start a Neighborhood Watch group; Make sure that all the youth in the neighborhood have positive ways to spend their spare time through our PALS, CADET or DAP programs; Clean up the neighborhood! Call 311 for any trash pick-up needs; Register for e-policing and/or Nixle to obtain current crime trends and updates; -AND- Register on to connect with your neighbors.
