The Pitkin Miner Winter Edition 2016 Published January 4, 2016 Edited January 6, February 6, February 25, February 28, March 6, March 9, and April 15, 2016 Editor, Suzy Metzler please with any additions or corrections with Miner in the subject line *REVERSE 911 LINK for Cell Phone Users who have homes here: pg. 10* *Info on ordering the 2014 Pitkin Cookbook (all money going to the Pitkin Volunteer Fire Department) is found on pg. 9* April 15, TAX DAY! Hello, dear readers! I apologize for the long delay since my last update. I also need to start a Spring 2016 edition and will do that in the next couple of days. I went up to Minnesota on March 10 and had pretty major surgery on March 17, got out of the hospital March 22 with a stable report and I only need to have a couple of chest xrays as follow-up. They fixed me! I m so excited! I LOVE MAYO CLINIC! I continued staying with my friend Becky whom I ve known all her life (our Moms were best friends and I am 18 months older than she is we have always been close) until April 1 when I flew back to Denver. Daughter Heidi brought me to Pitkin on April 2. I ve been laying low, resting a lot, trying not to overdo and now I am off the heavy duty painkillers and able to think clearly enough to write an update to the Miner! April 5, 2016 Election Results The results of the April 5 election gave the Town a mostly-new Board of Trustees. The only Trustee who was on the board before, as far as I know, is Matt Buchanan. Here is the list of Town Trustees who were sworn in earlier this week at the April 12, 2016, Town Meeting. Mayor Steve Pinkston ran unopposed and was also sworn in as Mayor at Tuesday night s meeting. Matt Buchanan Brad Wick Eddy Balch Cory Nasso Chris Nasso

Rachel New Congratulations to the newly elected Trustees and to incumbent Matt Buchanan! And Rachel New has been chosen as the Mayor Pro Tem, and congratulations on that, too, Rachel! QCIA Looking for New Board Members This was sent to me by my friend Kathy Walker: Hello, This year, the QCIA will be losing three board members which will need to be replaced. Board members serve a three year term but longer if they wish. We try to get a range of board members who live between Pitkin and Parlin. We are allowed three summer residents as board members. Election of new board members will be June 11 at the annual meeting. The object of the Quartz Creek Improvement Association is to promote and preserve our natural resources, our historical places of interest and to bring about civic betterment and social improvement. We normally meet once a month but sometimes we skip a month if nothing needs to be done. Recently, we have been meeting on a Tuesday afternoon, but if you work, we can switch back to evenings. If you are interested in learning more about being a board member, please contact Patri Reinmund at or patri@goldcreekmeadows.com Thank you! PS: Next QCIA Potluck is on May 14th. Mark your calendar now for a fun time. New and Fun, Upbeat Facebook Page having to do with Pitkin In the middle of one of my sleepless, painful nights, I had an idea. Years ago on Facebook I found a similar page with the topic being my hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, and it was so much fun to read that I remember that on that particular day and a couple more days after that, all I could do was sit and read it and smile and laugh! There were many more posts on the page for

Manhattan, but this one is a start and I think people are really enjoying it. If you are a Facebook member you might want to check it out. It is entitled You Know You ve Lived In Pitkin, Colorado if Right now it has just over 400 members and I started it 5 days ago. Enjoy and be sure to share your memories! March 9, 2016 Myron Dillow sent me an to let me know that his wife Marjorie has been hospitalized with a heart problem. She should be getting out of the hospital today, though, so that is good news! Myron and Marjorie s address is 1656 W. Lifecare Circle, Ozark, MO I believe Myron was here in the summer of He has been working for a long time on a book about Pitkin s history and has been searching for the first book of Minutes from the Town of Pitkin Meetings, for many years. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the missing minutes, please let me or Myron Dillow know. Myron s address is dillowmyron@gmail.com. March 6, 2016 QCIA Pot Luck at Newcomb Center in Pitkin, Saturday, March 12 Hello to one and all: Please come share in the QCIA Luck of the Irish Potluck on March 12, 2016 at 6:30. We will be meeting in Pitkin this month at the Newcomb Center. Bring a dish of your choice to share will all your friends and family. Everyone is welcome. Laughter and outstanding food is always the highlight of these functions. We will be looking forward to seeing all of you that can attend. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at Blessings to all of you! Kathy Walker SNOWY DAY TODAY Snow started around 9:30 this morning at my house it is supposed to pick up this evening and snow overnight and through tomorrow that s the prediction, and we may get up to 10 inches of fresh snow! That would be very welcome! It has been quite mild the past week or two and the snow is mostly melted off of all the streets. Even today the snow is not sticking to my deck but hopefully later tonight it will. February 28, 2016 Election Info Judge and Candidate Training Held February 27

Yesterday three appointed election judges and several candidates for Town Trustee met in two separate groups with the town s election consultant, Judy Egbert, to have some training. Something that I had not heard about before was that each candidate can have a watcher. The Watcher must be a registered voter and live in Pitkin full-time, and they will watch on election day as the mailed-in ballots (which will be contained in a plain envelope or sleeve, inside of the outer envelope on to which each voter must sign their signature) are opened. The Watchers have the right to challenge any voter's participation in the election if they do not believe that the voter truly qualifies to vote in the Town of Pitkin election. A form is completed by the Watcher that specifies the name of the voter in question and the reason that the Watcher does not feel that the voter is qualified. This form is turned in to the District Attorney and the D.A. then looks into the validity of the voter s registration as a voter in the Town of Pitkin and at his discretion, he may or may not choose to prosecute the possibly fraudulent voter. I have voted in many town elections here in Pitkin beginning in April 1998 after I moved to Pitkin (March 1996) to live here full-time, but none of the elections held from 1998 until 2014 had as many candidates. In many cases (I think really, MOST of the elections held in Pitkin), the elections were canceled due to there not being any reason to hold the election, which costs the town money. If there were only six people (or less, and I believe one time we only had 4 interested candidates) running for Trustee, and one running for Mayor, the election was canceled. Then after they took office in April, the Trustees and Mayor needed to urge one (or two) other citizens to serve as Trustee. Within a month or two, they would have a full Board of Trustees again. Sad News A Pitkin resident, Jane Corn, 65, passed away on February 23 in Arizona after a short illness. Jane and her husband Bill lived for many years in Gunnison but sold their home there and moved to Pitkin, where they made some nice improvements to their Main Street home, a few years ago. Jane worked with the Colorado Education Association. Bill Corn says that there will be a Celebration of Life for Jane held this summer in Gunnison. Bill's address currently is Bill Corn, 5518 East Lindstrom Lane, #3032, Mesa, AZ And More Sad News

Many readers may have learned already that Ida Martinez Archuleta, 86, passed away in Gunnison on January 2, 2016, peacefully at home. Two sons live here very close to Pitkin (Harold Archuleta lives at the Pitkin Fish Hatchery, but owns a home just feet away from Pitkin's town limits, and his brother Don and wife Vikki have their home just next door to Harold's home, both on 3rd Street). I know they were both so saddened by their mother's death, I hesitated to bother them to ask about putting information in the Pitkin Miner. It's such a hard thing to go through the death of a close loved one. Harold told me a few days ago that he would be fine with me putting something in the Pitkin Miner about his mother's passing. It's hard to know where to begin. There were a couple of wonderful write-ups in the Gunnison Country Times* and I had met Ida but did not know her well. She was an amazing lady who was always helping out so many other people. I think she was really an angel on earth! Ida was born in Milliken, Colorado, and moved to Pitkin with her family at the age of 10. Ida and her late husband Ernie had seven children: Rita, Don, Gloria, Harold, Barb and Kimberlee. They suffered the loss of their third son, David, in Ida and Ernie moved their family to Gunnison in Other than her six living children, Ida is also survived by her sister Margie Jimenez who lives in Olathe, Colorado. Ida had a special relationship with each of her 17 grandchildren, and 30 greatgrandchildren, and even had one great-great-grandchild! Ida had many friends and is missed by so many people in Gunnison County. Ida was very involved with her church in Gunnison, St. Peter s Catholic Church, and working in many different capacities over a timespan of 48 years, working with 11 different priests. Ida was a devoted fan of the Gunnison High School Cowboys and the Gunnison Country Times article on February 11 shows that her empty red chair was decorated in Ida s memory it was the first home game that Ida had missed in nearly five decades. Ida is missed by many and if any readers would like to send a card to Don and Vikki Archuleta or to Harold Archuleta, here are their mailing addresses:

Don & Vikki Archuleta, PO Box 44, Pitkin, CO Harold Archuleta, PO Box 117, Pitkin, CO The family has requested that a small Celebration of Life will be held in the summer of Alpine Tunnel Palisades Damaged by Avalanche or Rock Slide Sometime before February 8, an avalanche or rock slide occurred which damaged the Palisades, a retaining wall that is about 33 feet high, built without mortar out of hand-cut stones in the late 1800 s. Passage to the Alpine Tunnel from the Pitkin area is in jeopardy. More information will be known in the spring or summer. There is a wonderful article about this damage in the February 25, 2016, issue of the Gunnison Country Times. Search for Missing Town Meeting Minutes Myron Dillow has been writing a book of the history of Pitkin. He would like anyone who has knowledge of the whereabouts Pitkin Town Meeting Minutes for the years , to please let us know, and we will pass the information on to him. 9 Kelsey Metzler Marries Tom Hammond on February 20 in Santa Rosa, CA Kelsey Metzler, 27, youngest daughter of Suzy Metzler and her late husband Helmut, married Tom Hammond, 33, son of Coleen Maloney of Santa Rosa, CA, and Dave Hammond of Shingle Springs, CA, in a beautiful ceremony in Santa Rosa, California, this past Saturday! Kelsey moved to Santa Rosa in June of 2011 to take a job as a mechanical engineer with Agilent Technologies, then changed jobs in April of 2014 to work for Camelbak in Petaluma, CA. Tom works as the agricultural engineer for E & J Gallo Winery in Healdsburg, CA. The couple live in Santa Rosa and are currently enjoying their honeymoon in Bend, Oregon. Jim Ashbrook Doing Well On February 16 (I was on my way to California for Kelsey s wedding), Jim s brother Dennis wrote: Jim was very alert today. He is now on solid foods and regular liquids. He's had all tubes and stuff related to the surgery, removed. He is only on two IV's for a blood thinner and one antibiotic. From the time I got there, he was sitting up most of the time. He hasn't stood or walked, yet. He was doing SO WELL

that he was moved from Surgical ICCU to regular ICCU late this afternoon. That's a BIG accomplishment. We talked with the LVAD support rep after he was moved, and we, Jim and I, start our LVAD patient/family training tomorrow. After that, I'll begin learning about changing his bandages. Jim can now have visitors and take phone calls. I put his cell phone on the charger after his move to regular ICCU so he can receive calls. After all the festivities of the day, and then moving, I'd give him a day or so before calling him, though. More good news to follow...it's called optimism! Jim Ashbrook Update by his brother Dennis Ashbrook of Pueblo The Ashbrooks own a cabin on upper River Street and have a long history in Pitkin. Jim and Dennis Ashbrook are the sons of Gladys Ashbrook who some long-time Pitkin residents may know. Gladys is still alive and lives near Dennis in Pueblo. Dennis Ashbrook sent this update on his brother Jim who lives in Pennsylvania. Please keep Jim in your thoughts and prayers as well as Dennis for safe travels: Jim has been approved for the LVAD implant. We've waited for nearly two months and now they want to do the implant next week. Jim goes into the hospital Monday, February 8 and will have the LVAD implant done on Wednesday, February 11. I've arranged for visits to Mom from several friends, as I'll be leaving for Philadelphia next Thursday. I regret I'll not be there for Jim's surgery, but it's been a challenge arranging for personal leave from work on such short notice. I'll probably be in Philadelphia for 6 to 8 weeks. Dennis Ashbrook QCIA Pot Luck on Saturday, February 13, Ohio City School House Hello to all the Quartz Creek Valley friends: The QCIA Potluck will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 6:30 pm in the Ohio City School House. As an update the next three dates for QCIA Potlucks will be March 12th, April 9th and May 14th. Thought you might like to mark your calendars now. If you have any questions call me, Kathy Walker, at MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM PITKIN!

December 27, 2015, taken from First Street near River Street aka Waunita Pass Road January 6, 2016 QCIA Pot Luck Dinner January 9 in Ohio City Just a reminder that this Saturday, January 9, the QCIA (Quartz Creek Improvement Association) will have a Pot Luck Dinner in Ohio City at the School House at 6:30 p.m. Kathy Walker wrote: Please bring a dish to share, an appetite, a funny winter story and your laughter to share with the community. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the gathering. If you have any questions feel free to call Kathy Walker at Looking forward to seeing you all there. The fire will be going and warm drinks will be brewed.

2016 Town Election Information Information on the upcoming Pitkin Town Election has been posted at the Pitkin Post Office both inside and outside, and petitions for those who would like to run for Town Trustee or Mayor are available as of yesterday from Pitkin s Town Clerk/Treasurer, Jody Wise. Interested full-time residents can call Jody at and make arrangements to pick up a petition. The petitions must be turned in to Jody by January 25, complete with signatures of Pitkin voters and notarized by a notary public. Note: I am no longer a Notary Public but I believe that Lucinda Lull still is. Banks in Gunnison will also notarize documents for the public. January 4, 2016 Snowy Winter So Far in Pitkin Here in Pitkin we didn't get very much snow until December 21...then it snowed December 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25, sometimes all day long! Snow worshipers like me, of course, were thrilled! I do hope that people did not have trouble getting here...my oldest daughter drove from northern California on December 19 and 20, so she and her husband made it just in time. We also have had a lot of cold temperatures, which has preserved the snow nicely and most of the snow that landed on the trees around town is still on the trees...well, at least quite a bit of it is! So that's a pretty sight to see. The lowest temperature that I heard about was -16 and at my house, I recorded -15 degrees on December 27. The temperatures remained below freezing in Pitkin from December 20 until today, January 4, Today I recorded a high of 35 at my house. Still Available: PVFD Cookbook Fundraiser, published Summer 2014 The PVFD s Pitkin cookbook, entitled Pitkin to Parlin Revisited, a fundraiser for the Pitkin Volunteer Fire Department is still available! These would make wonderful Christmas gifts, so keep that in mind. Suzy Metzler is handling the mailing of cookbooks to those who are not able to come to Pitkin to pick one up in person. All of the $14 per cookbook goes directly to the PVFD. If you would like to buy a single cookbook and have it mailed to you, please send a check made out to the PVFD (Pitkin Volunteer Fire Department) for $20.00 to Suzy Metzler, PO Box 100, Pitkin, CO 81241, and I will mail the cookbook out to you. The price breakdown of the $20 is $14 for the cookbook and $6 for priority mail postage which includes $50 in insurance.

If you want me to send you more than one cookbook, please me at so that I can check on the best way to mail or ship the cookbooks to you and I can also set aside the number of cookbooks you want to order. Then you can mail me a check made out to the PVFD at this address: Suzy Metzler, PO Box 100, Pitkin, CO I will ship these out just as quickly as I can. REMEMBER checks are not made out to Suzy, but to the Pitkin Volunteer Fire Department, or PVFD and then mail them to Suzy, please, at the address above.
