2 Welcome Message from the EARCOS Executive Director and CIS Director of Higher Education Welcome to the first Institute on Higher Education Admission and Guidance, the culmination of a collaborative effort between EARCOS and the Council of International Schools (CIS). We are pleased to jointly host this new regional Asia/Pacific event. Dr. Richard Krajczar EARCOS Executive Director Paul Greene CIS Director of Higher Education This Institute is designed to connect the school and higher education communities for purposeful dialogue and networking, to enhance your knowledge of leading practices to guide, admit and support international students as they explore and choose their paths in higher education. We expect that you will find your time here to be well spent. Thanks to the CIS and EARCOS teams, especially the support of Bill Oldread and Joe Petrone with EARCOS, and Willemijn Nieuwenhuys and Nunana Nyomi with CIS, and the planning committee which includes David Birchenall (IS Manila), Jennifer Melton (IS Bangkok), Aleka Bilan (JIS), Kathy Schultz (NIST), Mary Adams (Pennsylvania State University), and Kindel Hollis (Trinity University). And of course, we are indebted to our respective office staff who provide support from Manila and Leiden. We are thrilled to have 110 universities and 150 counselors with us, exceeding our original goal. The Institute will be offered annually in the future, and we hope that it continues to grow. The workshops include university admissions topics as well as issues faced by our schools across the Asia/Pacific region. None of this would be possible without the contributions of our presenters and we hope that next year, you ll be inspired to submit a session proposal. Thanks to our many volunteers and to the Shangri-La for its hospitality and service, in support of our students, families and schools in the region. On behalf of the EARCOS and CIS Boards and our respective members, thank you for joining us at this CIS-EARCOS Institute on Higher Education and Admission. We hope you will leave energized by what you ve learned and the relationships you ve built. Dr. Richard Krajczar EARCOS Executive Director Paul Greene CIS Director of Higher Education

Within these walls are situated government offices and the Chapel Royal of the Emerald Buddha besides the royal residences. When Siam restored law and order after the fall of Ayutthaya the monarch lived in Thonburi on the west side of the river. Rama I, on ascending the throne, moved the centre of administration to this side of the Chao Phraya; and, after erecting public monuments such as fortifications and monasteries, built a palace to serve not only as his residence but also his offices--the various ministries, only one of which remains in the palace walls. This palace came to be known as the Grand Palace, in which the earliest edifices contemporary with the foundation of Bangkok were the two groups of residences named the Dusit Maha Prasat and the Phra Maha Monthian.
