Seminar outputs: Definitions and links with SRIA 1 Live Testing: Structured use of a final product based processes to critically demonstrate its behaviour against high level objectives and requirements in its operational environment. Real testing: Structured use of prototype and facility based processes to critically evaluate a real product behaviour in a configuration against specified requirements in a test environment Model (DoD , 2009): A physical, mathematical, or otherwise logical representation of a system, entity, phenomenon, or process. (Non-comprehensive examples: a mathematical formula, a mock-up, a logically rigorous representation of a system or a systems behavior, and a human behavior representation). 10AirTN-NextGen 10
Seminar outputs: Definitions and links with SRIA 1 Simulation (DoD , 2009): A method for implementing a model over time. (Non-comprehensive examples: federation, distributed interactive simulation, combinations of simulations).. Virtual testing: Structured use of modelling and simulation based processes to critically evaluate a real product behaviour in a configuration against specified requirements in a test environment. In SRIA 1: a fatigue, fracture mechanics/crack propagation model of the complete airframe is coupled with aerodynamic and thermal models eliminating ground test rigs completely p. 75; Developments are supported by high-fidelity multidisciplinary virtual engine simulation capabilities p. 88. Virtual Hybrid Testing: Structured mix of virtual testing and real testing to evaluate a product against behaviour in a specific environment In SRIA 1: Lightning and electromagnetic compatibility are certificated at 11AirTN-NextGen airframe level by modelling with reduced full scale testing p.75 11
Seminar outputs: Definitions and links with SRIA 1 Cluster/Federation of simulations: Cluster of distributed and disparate models and/or simulations operating in a network. In SRIA 1: Large dimension simulations allow rapid design iteration and optimisation involving all system levels and across all disciplines from flight physics to physical design p. 130; The organisation of infrastructure into a European network or clusters supported by the appropriate legal framework p. 130; The world s leading research infrastructure is built on existing facilities, which are maintained, together with the coordinated development of new infrastructure p.130. Certification: Compliance demonstration to the applicable regulations (From the design to operations). All analyses must be based on test data. 12AirTN-NextGen 12
Seminar outputs (from presentations): Points of view regarding simulation capabilities: Certification assisted by simulations: To demonstrate compliance for changes (baseline already demonstrated). More effort for now but long term gain is expected. Simulation will be more and more extensively used and be more and more integrated (Environment simulation, Multiple model coupling ). Virtual testing during the design cycle Preliminary risk assessment by simulation, Preparation of the real tests. Simulation Infrastructure Hardware funding support seems to be OK but not the case for softwares Improvements needed: Validation and verification, Multi-physics coupling, Uncertainty quantification, Model-order reduction. 13AirTN-NextGen 13
Seminar outputs (from presentations): Points of view regarding simulation capabilities: The nature of uncertainty evolves during the design cycle: Lack of knowledge, Intellectual properties, Marketing changes, Fast changing hypothesis, Large amount of information, Variability due to manufacturing, Certification issues Simulations can not replace all the tests The use of VHT increases every year. The use of VHT Modification of old infrastructures / New facilities including new systems. 14AirTN-NextGen 14
Seminar outputs (from presentations): From examples to advantages: Project TOICA (Thermal Overall Integrated Conception of Aircraft): TOICA will provide a complex representation of the thermal behaviour of the whole aircraft and will support the overall product architecture and design. Reduction of aircraft development costs (Reduction of the equipment development cost: expected 10%) Supply chain efficiency (reduction of the lead time of an aircraft thermal architecture assessment: expected 50%) Virtual design development in TOICA directly addresses "Challenge 3 Competitiveness through innovation" of the ACARE SRA2. 15AirTN-NextGen 15
Seminar outputs (from presentations): From examples to advantages: Project 4D Co-GC (4D Contract Guidance and Control): A step change in air transport operations by providing a more radical and environmentally efficient solution for the management of the airspace: 4D contracts of aircrafts are arranged to avoid any same time at same position situation by speed and trajectory adjustment. Simulation frame: 2 simulation infrastructures; Multiple languages; Modules plugged to one of the infrastructures. 4DCo-GC development directly adresses the activities "Pioneering the air transport of the future" and points out the potential of networks of simulations. 16AirTN-NextGen 16
Seminar outputs (from presentations): Key issues concerning the use of simulations: Simulation is by nature a simplification of reality and based on current knowledge: Aircraft environment is very complex and aircraft systems and structures are more and more interdependant Cannot take into account non previsibles aspects or human behavior Improvement of confidence and accuracy is required. Quality metrics are required: credibility scoring? Challenges concerning the following tools: simulations, tests, research infrastuctures, certification process. Moreover the global consistency of these tools is required. Need to preserve research infrastuctures for validation. Human challenges: Engineers ARE NOT USED to express the uncertainty in their domain. A strong effort is required in basic training and professional training. 17AirTN-NextGen 17
Seminar outputs (from presentations and discussions): Questions/Discussions Key issues RI's Key actions From presentations to 2 technical perspectives: Modelisation/Simulation developments: Is it possible to develop efficient parts of global simulations without the practical knowledge of each part of the simulations? How can we assess the different parts of the global code? Consistency of the global code (and especially in cluster case)? How can we assure that all the models are consistent all together? Are new methodologies required? Essential actions/requirements concerning RIs? 18AirTN-NextGen Validation and confidence: How can we validate the simulation because of the limits of the sharing of information? What about the protection of the knowledge? Is it possible to study the response of the other models and build a good blackbox (reverse engineering a problem) Advices? From uncertainties to certainty? Essential needs to be confident? Wishes to the research community (RI, University ), to the agencies (EC, EASA ), to the Industry 18
Seminar outputs (from presentations and discussions): Questions/Discussions Key issues RI's Key actions Is this suggestion a future possibility/wish/will: models from company and RIs and Labs connected to a platform (the regulator platform) to reach conclusion on an issue? What should be the place of RI's? VHT (due to infrastructures)? Different needs regarding the customer? Company/Public entity? Company (faisability and normal use); Public entity What is the impact of very rare events / model uncertainty? Where is the real object and where is the model? Opportunity/Interest of a student challenge on cluster of simulation capabilities or on virtual certification or on virtual testing An interest for research community? Requirements? What are your essential requirements about RI's (as customers, partners, providers). Essentials actions? Suggestions? Discussions? 19AirTN-NextGen 19
Seminar outputs: Perspectives Agreement of attendees regarding the suggested questions/discussions Identified actions and/or directions. A strong agreement concerning the organisation of a student challenge (simulation, uncertainty ) Suggested actions: White paper on virtuel testing by industry? Opportunities for cross-fertilisation with space codes? Roadmap of RIs: taking into account VHT trend. taking into account design process. in collaboration with industry needs. taking into the all the RI competitors. EASA needs. Needs to manage simultaneously strategic RIs and stategic codes. 20AirTN-NextGen 20
Perspectives Next Workshop Preparation of the Workshop dedicated to preparatory technical work for the development of new infrastructures and their associated software tools. Objectives: Focus on practical requirements and specific new infrastructures. Identification of feasibility studies. List of the needed upgrades of RIs to cluster simulation capabilities and to develop virtual certification tools and procedures. Identification of new specific infrastructures dedicated to connect existing research infrastructures (e.g. specific communication equipment, standardization of model connections ). Potential use of a new mechanism supporting the personnel mobility to foster the development of simulation clusters and virtual certification. Next year in Amsterdam! Your suggestions, interactive exchanges and participation are welcome! 21AirTN-NextGen 21
Conclusions RI catalogue updated a new update at the end of the year. Seminar: Discussions on both technical and policy levels. A lot of point of view exchanges and discussions. Future needs to plug models from various stakeholders on a same simulation platform (+ associated actions). A RI's roadmap is needed. Presentations will be available on the AirTN Website soon. Unanimous needs: engineers with skills in both a physic field and uncertainty management. A starting point for a student challenge proposal? 22AirTN-NextGen 22
