1 Dear Oklahoma Evaluator On behalf of Pearson, thank you for evaluating our Interactive Science program. The purpose of this document is to address the program Lexile readability score for grades 6-8. Scores for the Interactive Science program (national edition) are listed below by grade level, then by lesson. Please note that the Lexile score is determined by an independent agency and is not influenced by the publisher, the choice of passages to include in the study, etc. Yet, as you already know, readability is not accurately determined by a simple score as most readability tests focus on reviewing passages for multi- syllable words, and compound- complex sentences. Determining the readability of a text in this fashion will not take into account any structured access provided through the text design, or embedded support materials to help multiple levels of readers access the content. At Pearson we provide research- based, scaffolded access to the content throughout the program to meet all levels of readers where they are developmentally, while helping them build important science, literacy, and comprehension skills. As such, as you begin your program evaluation, please open any grade level student text to review how students will master science, reading, math, and non- fiction content. You will see that each lesson is divided into small reading chunks of text, and that each includes numerous ways to interact with the content such as circling, drawing, highlighting, underlining, or writing, requiring students to stop while they read and assess and deepen their understanding at point of use not just at the end of the lesson or chapter. Our resources also provide point- of- use graphic organizers throughout the chapter, and allow for extension and enrichment at each stage of instruction. Like you, we know that active learners who read and interact with both images and the text retain more, score higher on standardized testing, and have deeper comprehension.
