1 ATHLETICS & CO- CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES In accordance with P.I.A.A. rules, all 7th and 8th grade students will have the opportunity to try out for interscholastic sports. The following is the list of sports: Fall: Football, Hockey, Volleyball, Soccer (Boys) Winter: Basketball, Wrestling Spring: Baseball, Softball, Track, Soccer (Girls) No student may participate in practice or a game on any day that they are suspended. Students may also not attend games as a spectator on days they are suspended. This is true for both ISS and OSS. All students may participate in various non-athletic activities that happen throughout the year. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Art Club, Poetry Club, Ultimate Frisbee, Fitness Club, Stage Crew Eligibility- Student eligibility to play on an inter-scholastic team or to be active in Co-curricular activities will depend on his/her behavior and academic performance. In the area of sports this will be determined weekly by the core teams. If a student is failing two or more subjects at the end of a week, he/she is ineligible to participate for the following week, Monday through Friday. It is expected that an ineligible student is seeking extra help from his/her teachers after school; therefore, and ineligible student may not attend athletic events as a spectator while they remain ineligible. ATTENDANCE - DISTRICT POLICY Regular and punctual attendance in school is very important. Absence from school is one of the causes of low grades and of failure in school subjects. Your attendance record is accurately kept and recorded on your report cards and on your permanent record from the time you enter school until you graduate from high school. Any student who is absent may not attend any school function after school that day. Unexcused (unlawful) absence or tardiness will be declared for the following reasons: illegal employment, truancy, oversleeping, missing the bus, shopping, baby-sitting, hunting, fishing, remaining home to do school work, and other similar reasons. Any student who accumulates an excessive number of absences may be required by school authorities to present medical excuse from his/her physician for any or for each subsequent absence. When a student is absent from school or from a class, he/she is responsible for contacting his/her teacher to make up the work. The work must be made up immediately and within the time period prescribed by his/her teacher. If a student is absent from school for an extended period of time (several days or weeks), he/she must make special arrangements with his teachers to make up missed work. Perfect Attendance Perfect attendance is defined as attending school every day for the full school day. No exceptions will be made for late arrival, early dismissal or time missed during the school day. School sponsored activities that must commence prior to dismissal are considered part of the school day. ABSENCE 1. When you must be absent from school, you are required to submit a written excuse for your absence to your homeroom teacher as soon as you return to school. A written 2

2 note is required even if the parent had called the school on the day of the absence. 2. Failure to present a signed and dated written excuse note within three days of returning will cause the absence to be recorded as "unlawful". Three accumulated unlawful absences will result in a first notice of citation to district court and a truancy elimination plan. 3. If your absences become excessive, you will be required to submit a doctor's verification of your need to be absent. 4. The school will call you at home or a school attendance officer may visit your home when you are absent. 5. Parents are encouraged to phone the Attendance office (at ext. 1112) before 10:00 a.m. on the day of absence. 6. When a student is absent from school or class the student is responsible for contacting the teacher to make up work. The work must be made up within the time period prescribed by the teacher. 7. Attendance letters will be mailed to the parent or guardian when a student begins to accumulate an excessive number of absences. Lateness 1. If you report late to school, report to the lower office to sign in and obtain a late admittance slip. If you fail to sign in and remove your name from the absentee report, you will be reported absent from school. 2. You must bring with you a note signed by a parent or guardian, which attests to a valid reason for being late. 3. Parent or guardians are encouraged to phone the lower office when a student is going to be late. Some valid reasons for lateness are: illness, personal injury, doctor's appointment which cannot be scheduled after school hours, family emergency, funeral or other urgent reasons. 4. Lateness to school is classified as "excused" or "unexcused". Oversleeping, missing the bus, baby-sitting, remaining home to do homework, having car problems or other similar reasons will be declared unexcused lateness. 5. When a student accumulates three or more unexcused latenesses, a letter will be sent to alert parents. Lateness without a valid reason may result in disciplinary action including being fined by District Court. EARLY DISMISSAL 1. If you have a valid need to leave school before the end of the school day, a note requesting early dismissal signed by a parent or guardian must be submitted to the lower office before the beginning of school on the day of the early dismissal. 2. When the request for early dismissal has been approved, you will be given a dismissal note which must be shown to the teacher at the time you are to leave school. 3. Your parent or guardian must pick you up at the lower office at the early dismissal time. 4. Students are not permitted to leave the school premises during school hours under any circumstances without permission of the administration and parental approval. BREAKFAST Breakfast is served every morning between 7:35 am until 7:57am. 3

3 BULLYING Bullying is defined as any gesture or written, verbal, graphic, or physical act (including electronically transmitted acts i.e., Internet, cell phones) that is perceived as being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic, such as: race; color; religion; ancestry; national origin; gender, sexual orientation; gender identity and expression; or a mental, physical or sensory disability or impairment; or by any other distinguishing characteristic. Disciplinary action will be taken according to policy BUS BEHAVIOR Student misbehavior on a bus will not be tolerated. Any student who is referred to the administration by a bus driver will be subject to disciplinary action including warning, assigned seating, loss of bus privileges, or suspension from school. CELL PHONES It is understood that many families provide a cell phone to their child for emergency contact purposes after school hours. However, cell phones are not permitted to be taken to class or used at any time during the school day. All students should leave cell phones in their locker between 7:30 AM and 2:45 PM. School officials may search a cell phone of any student who does not follow these rules CONFERENCES Most conferences concerning academics and behavior will be handled at the team level and may be initiated by the parents or the school. Re-admit conferences following a suspension will be handled by the administration. The Student Assistance Program team will initiate conferences as well. DRESS AND BEHAVIOR Students are expected to dress in a manner, which does not detract from the learning environment as determined by administration and staff. If anything in a student's general appearance is found to be inappropriate, the student will be removed from the school population until the situation is corrected. The partial list of Do's and Don'ts may help answer some of the questions about clothing and behavior that have come up in the past. Students should review these guidelines with their parent(s) or guardian(s), as well as the following School Board policies, which are printed on the district calendar and also available on the district website. Respect all persons and property. Learn and follow rules for specific areas. Eat only in the cafeteria. Leave book bags in your locker. DON'T Wear T shirts with questionable pictures Wear muscle or basketball shirts. Bring ipods or electronic games. Bring skateboards or rollerblades Wear hats, outdoor clothing or sunglasses inside the building. Chew gum at any time. Share lockers. Wear midriff baring shirts. Take food from the cafeteria 4

4 DISCIPLINE A positive educational environment requires the cooperation of students, parents, teachers and administration. Each student is responsible for his or her own behavior. The emphasis is on developing self-discipline. The expectation is that students will behave in an orderly and respectful manner. Disruptions and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated at any time. Rules for appropriate behavior apply from the time you leave your home in the morning to walk to school or to the bus stop, on the bus to and from school, hallways, cafeteria, athletic fields as well as the classroom, until you reach your home in the afternoon. Consequences vary depending on the offense and may include teacher detention, Administrative detention, Saturday Detention, In-School Suspension and Out- Of-School Suspension. Detentions- These are usually served Tuesdays or Thursdays from 2:45 PM to 4 PM. There is a late bus at 4. Saturday Detentions- For more serious and/ or for repeated offenses, detentions on Saturday will be assigned. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the high school. The hours are currently 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the program. Suspensions- Suspension is reserved for the more serious offenses or for repeated minor offenses. A suspension may be served "inschool" or out-of-school. The length may vary. The least severe is called a 24 hour suspension which means a student may only return to school with a parent the next day for a conference about their behavior. Most suspensions are for a day to an indefinite period of time as determined by the administration. While on suspension a student may not attend any school district function. The student is responsible to make up any assignments. Teachers will not penalize a student academically for the suspension. The student will be given a reasonable amount of time to make up work or take a test. A suspension may be given for the following infractions. This is not allinclusive but may be used as a guideline. 1. Theft of school or personal property. 2. Physical attack or threat to a student or staff member. 3. Smoking on school property or during school activities, or possession of cigarettes. 4. Misbehavior in a guest teacher's class. 5. Use of obscene or abusive language. 6. Chronic cutting of school or class. 7. Chronic lateness to school or class. 8. Verbally threatening or abusing a staff member or student. 9. Willful damaging of school or personal property. 10. Refusing to serve administrative detention. 11. Possession, use, distribution of illegal substances including tobacco, alcohol, drugs. 12. Forgery. 13. Lying. 14. Willful disruption of the normal operation of school. 15. Leaving school grounds without permission. 16. Use of any explosive device such as poppers or snappers, firecrackers, etc. 17. Any activity performed on school property or during school activities which is considered criminal under local, state or federal laws. 18. Refusing to comply with reasonable instructions of a staff member. 5

Serious Incident Reports (SIRs) are written for all violations of the drug, alcohol and weapons policy, and for serious fights. 6 FOOD AND GUM EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING If inclement weather or another emergency prevents school from opening that information will be on all the major radio stations. The emergency school closing number for the Centennial School District is 753. Information can also be found on cable channel 27 and on the district website: FAMILY TRIPS Family trips totaling no more three (3) days are permissible during the school year. The parents must submit a letter for approval of the trip to the principal at least two weeks prior to the trip. FIRE DRILLS & SAFETY DRILLS Fire drills are very serious exercises designed to prepare students and staff for the rapid evacuation of the building in case of an actual fire. When the fire bell sounds the students must leave the building through the proper exits in an orderly and quiet manner. Under no circumstances should anyone remain in the school building. Teachers will be responsible for having classes organized to close doors and windows and supervise the exit of students. Other drills to practice school safety are held at various times throughout the year. It is most important to listen to your teachers directions. Food and beverages must be consumed in the cafeteria except for special occasions designated by the principal. No students are allowed to chew gum at school. GUEST TEACHERS Students are to show guest teachers the same attention and respect as a classroom teacher. Serious disciplinary action will be taken with any student that does not show appropriate behavior towards any guest. GUIDANCE Your guidance counselor is ready to help you in several ways: student and parent interviews, small and large group discussions of common problems, testing programs, career information and perhaps most importantly, as a person you can go to with a personal problem. Students can make appointments with their counselor before school, after school, or during the school day with the permission of their classroom teacher. HOMEWORK Students will be assigned homework on a regular and consistent basis. Homework is a natural extension of the educational program and is assigned for the student s benefit. It contributes to the development of independence and responsibility on the part of the student. It is recommended that students select a buddy in each class who will call them with homework assignments in case of absence. If a student is going to be absent for three or more days, parents may call the Guidance Department at , ext 1112 and homework assignments will be ready for pick-up between 2:45 and 3:15 7

7 HONOR ROLL Distinguished Honors- A numerical average of at least 95%, with no more than one grade below 90% First Honors A numerical average of at least 90%, with no grade less than 80% Second Honors A numerical average of at least 85%, with no grade less than 75% = A = D = B 0-64 = F = C LATE BUS SCHEDULE Students who wish to stay after school lets out at 2:45 may ride one of three late busses. The schedule is subject to change depending on the sports season, but generally there will be a 4pm bus on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Monday through Friday during each sport season, there is a 5pm for athletes only. LIBRARY The Library opens to students at 8:00 a.m. and remains open through the day until 3:30 p.m. You may come to the library during the day with a hall pass from your teacher. LOCKERS Lockers are provided for students for personal use while they are in school. Students will be issued two lockers; a hall locker and a physical education locker. The lockers remain the property of the school and are to be used properly. MEDICAL 1. The health room will be closed the first hour every morning except for emergencies. 2. You must have a pass to go to the nurse's office. 3. No health room visits during the activity period except in emergencies. 4. Please take medical excuses to the lower office. MEDICAL EXCUSE If you are restricted from participating in school activities, including physical education, you must present a written request from your family physician to the school nurse and the teacher-in-charge describing the condition and advising the kind and type of restriction. MEDICATION If it becomes necessary for you to take any form of medication at school, a signed note from a parent must be presented along with the medication to the nurse. The note must say what medication is to be taken and what the dosage is. No one should carry medication of any kind (aspirin or Tylenol, etc., included). All medications will be kept in and dispensed through the nurse's office. Failure to follow these guidelines will be considered a violation of policy 3.1. PERSONAL DATA Please notify the lower office and guidance whenever a change of address or phone number occurs. An emergency number should also be included with the information given to the lower office. 8

8 PROGRESS REPORTS Progress reports are issued at the end of the fifth week in each of the four report periods throughout the school year. SCHOOL HOURS School hours for students are from 8am to 2:45 p.m. SCHOOL STORE The school store is located on the lower level near the office. School supplies and special items are available at reasonable cost. The store is open at posted times. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Sexual harassment of students as defined in school board policy 3.14 will not be tolerated and may result in suspension or expulsion from school. SMOKING The Centennial School District prohibits possession and/or use of cigarettes or any form of tobacco. Lighters or matches are also prohibited. Disciplinary action will be taken according to district policy # The school district or the local authorities may also issue fines. STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM This program is designed to help you with problems that seem insurmountable. All members of the team have been trained to recognize and act as an advocate for students in a crisis. Some team members will be leading group discussion of life issues. S.A.P. provides yet another way to help students. TELEPHONE USE Students use of the schools phones is restricted. No student is to use the public phone during school hours. Students may use school phones with administrative permission for emergencies during the school hours. Studcents may not use their personal cell phones during school hours. TEXTBOOKS All textbooks are loaned to students for the year. Textbooks must be covered. Students are financially responsible for damaged or lost books. TRANSPORTATION Anyone who is either picking up or dropping off a student at school should do so at either end of the building so as not to block access of the school busses in the front of school. All students who normally ride a bus to and from school are not permitted to walk home unless a parent gives permission. Riding the bus is a privilege and anyone who does not exhibit appropriate behavior may lose his/her bus riding privileges for up to a year. The student s parents are responsible for getting their child to school during a bus suspension. TUTORIAL The tutorial primarily runs every day from 8:50 am to 9:40 am primarily to allow time for the music performance groups to meet. For all other students, this is a time to seek extra help and make up missing assignments. 9

9 VISITORS All visitors to Log College must first register at the lower office to obtain a Visitor s Pass. WITHDRAWAL You may obtain a withdrawal form in the guidance office. School records will not be released until all obligations are fulfilled, classroom and library books returned and accounts cleared. 10
