Approximately 1/3 of youth are overweight or obese. A 2007 study found that 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Childhood obesity is likely to track onto adulthood, putting them at risk for comorbidities such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Introduction- ROSE Mission and Overview - ROSE (Reducing Obesity in Students Everywhere) is committed to overweight and obesity prevention in youth. - We address issues pertaining to overweight and obesity in children and encourage adopting and maintaining a health promoting lifestyle. - ROSE works with Miami-Dade county schools in hopes to make positive health behavior changes in our children and adolescents. 1
2 ROSE Health Promotion Lesson ROSE Topics Topics taught by ROSE presentation: Nutrition Physical activity Sleep Screen time Fast food marketing Health behaviors (avoid smoking, drinking, stress) Middle and High only Learning Objectives By the end of the presentation, students (grades 3-12) will be able to: 1. Specify the health consequences of obesity 2. Understand how the health choices they make during their youth can affect their future health 3. Provide examples of foods in the MyPlate food groups 4. Recognize that half of their plates should be filled with fruits and vegetables 2
3 Learning Objectives con t 5. Read and understand a food label 6. Describe the consequences of excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages 7. Understand how fast-food companies use various marketing techniques to sell their products 8. Understand energy balance and describe the recommendations for physical activity and screen time 9. Demonstrate an understanding of the material by reporting in writing three things they learned from the presentation Learning Objectives con t Students in middle and high school will also be able to: 1. Describe techniques for managing stress 2. Describe ways to improve their sleep hygiene 3. Summarize the consequences of smoking and its effect on multiple organs Learning Objectives con t These learning objectives are consistent with several of the National Health Education Standards, including: Describe the relationship between healthy behaviors and personal health; Examine the potential seriousness of injury or illness if engaging in unhealthy behaviors; Explain how media influences thoughts, feelings, and health behaviors; Describe ways that technology can influence personal health. 3
4 Teaching Procedures Teaching Procedures Two online presentations are available one for 3 rd -5 th graders and one for 6 th -12th graders. The interactive presentations are presented through the Prezi website. 60 minutes is the recommended duration of the lesson (50 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for the post-presentation in class assessment). Purpose of Project This project evaluated the interactive health promotion lesson's effect on: acquired knowledge, health behavior intention, information remembered one month after the lesson, health behavior change and, whether students spoke to their family about the lesson. 4
5 Literature Review Research shows that increased child-perceived parental communication is associated with adolescent well-being and overall health (Ackard, Neumark-Sztainer, Story, & Perry, 2006). More specifically, higher levels of parent-child communication has been found to predict moderate to vigorous physical activity and healthy eating behaviors (Ornelas, Perreira & Ayala, 2007; Young & Fors 2001) Literature Review con t Research also shows that parental surveillance, involvement and communication levels with children is associated with children's motivation to learn as well as their academic achievement. Based off of this postulation, those students of actively involved parents are more likely to be receptive to lesson material. Finally, as our nation s schools serve as the most profitable environment to foster obesity prevention and health promotion strategies, as more than 54 million children attend daily. Methods High school students (N=182) were exposed to the 50 minute health promotion lesson during class. 57.5% female Mean age= Following the presentation, students completed a survey assessing the information they learned from the presentation, and their healthy behavior intentions 5
6 Assessment Procedures The effectiveness of the lesson can be assessed using the Health Knowledge and Behavior Change surveys. Students are given a 9 item survey immediately following the presentation One month later, a similar survey is disseminated Post-Presentation Selected Survey Items List 3 things you learned from today s talk. What are you going to do to be healthy? How sure are you that you will make a healthy change? Are you going to tell your family about what you learned today? One Month Post Selected Survey Items List 3 things you remember about the talk. What did you tell your family about the talk? Did you try do anything to be healthy after we talked to you? If you tried to do something to be healthy, what did you do? If you tried to do something healthy, how good of a job did you do? Did anyone help you do something healthy? If someone helped you do something healthy, what did they do? 6
7 Percentage Reported 10/20/2015 Results Health behavior intention: 99% of students reported intent to make a health behavior change at baseline. Health behavior change: 87% reported making a change one month later. Acquired knowledge: 98% of students reported learning something from the lesson Information remembered one month after the lesson: 84% of students reported remembering at least one thing from the lesson a month later. Results con t Whether students spoke to their family about the lesson: Of the 96 (52.7%) students that reported initiating family discussion about the lesson, virtually all of them (99%) remembered information they learned one month later. Students who talked to their families about what they learned were more likely to have retained the material one month later (χ 2 (1,N=182)=26.2, p<.001). Note: similar effects have been found in elementary and middle school populations These results demonstrate that obesity prevention strategies can be effectively disseminated in the classroom Discussion con t Material learned at school can be extended to the family. Therefore, health promotion school lessons can encourage healthy behaviors in the home. Familial discussion may facilitate the preservation of learned material by supporting health behaviors. Increased parent involvement and discussion may improve promotion, prevention and treatment efforts, and, in turn, child health outcomes. 8
9 Clinical and Classroom Implications Interactive health interventions can be successfully adapted to a classroom setting. Thus, schools remain a profitable environment to foster future obesity prevention programs. As health behaviors are related to academic achievement, by implementing health promotion lessons, teachers have the potential to affect the academic as well as physical wellbeing of their students.
