Founded in 1964 by the Sisters of St Joseph, the College strives to live the motto 'Ad Altiora' (Ever Higher) as inspired by our founder St Mary (of the Cross) MacKillop. Our distinctive curriculum offerings, nurturing environment and extensive building program, ensure that Our Lady's College is well placed to meet the needs of current and future generations of young women. This year has been a year of action appropriate to our Josephite heritage. Our focus this year was the famous quote of St Mary MacKillop, "Find happiness in making others happy." This inspired the community to be involved in a myriad of experiences including outreach programs and cultural and sporting endeavours. Our continued focus on the pursuit of academic excellence has seen the College again celebrate improved learning outcomes for our students. Outstanding NAPLAN and OP scores in this report demonstrate deep knowledge of our students learning needs and the dedication of our teachers. 2 Characteristics of the student body Our Lady's College is an Archdiocesan Secondary College for girls, established by the Sisters of St Joseph in It is situated in the Brisbane inner-city suburb of Annerley. The recent building program positions the College enrolment capacity to be able to accommodate approximately 450 students. Many parents have chosen the school specifically because of its size, seeking a school where their daughters will be known as individuals, and not be lost in the anonymity of a large college. While the College is situated in the suburb of Annerley, good transport links see students travel from outlying southern suburbs of Brisbane. Approximately one third of our students are from non-english speaking backgrounds. The mix of cultures in the college community is a source of pride and provides for a rich diversity in classroom interactions and shared experiences. Culture is celebrated through student involvement in dance groups including Asian, Indian, African and Polynesian and everyday interactions that reflect the changing nature of the Australian context. Enrolments are drawn from as many as 24 different Catholic and State Primary Schools and 18 different parishes. Social climate The College ethos prioritises values of justice, service, compassion and integrity. Students are encouraged to live the College motto, Ad Altiora (Ever Higher) in all of their daily actions. Inclusive Pastoral Care programs, together with clear expectations as outlined in our Behaviour Support Plan, result in a largely harmonious environment where learning and teaching are the focus. This is key to positive learning outcomes for students in a multicultural setting. Clubs such as Benenson Society, Japanese Club, STEM, Cultural Dance groups and St Vincent de Paul, together with outreach experiences via Rosies and TriCare visits, allow students opportunities to find their place within the community whilst also contributing to our wider community. 3 Curriculum - our extra curricula activities Students at Our Lady's College have access to a wide array of co-curricular offerings. - The College is a member of CaSSSA Sports where students can participate in competitive sports against other Catholic girls' schools in Brisbane. Sports include, but are not limited to: tennis, volleyball, netball, touch football, indoor cricket, basketball and soccer. - Community involvement groups include: St Vincent de Paul Society, Benenson Society, primary school sport coaching, Rosies and TriCare visits as well as opportunities for students to support emerging societal needs. - Extension activities for Science are available through the STEM-Cell group where students explore the fields of Chemistry, Biology and Physics in practical and exciting ways. - The College boasts a number of impressive choirs, a growing instrumental program and private music tuition. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction The College Board and P & F are key sources of feedback to the College and this is highly valued by the College Leadership Team and staff. Students are able to provide feedback through the Student Representative Council and Senior Leadership Committees. Staff responses to the Staff Satisfaction survey provides positive feedback. Feedback from all groups indicates a high degree of satisfaction in all aspects of college life. Parent engagement Parental commitment to the College remains strong with pleasing engagement with Working Bees, attendance at Excellence Assemblies, New Parent Barbecue, College Masses, Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews and Information Evenings. The College communicates with parents via a fortnightly newsletter and specific information is sent through the College and texting systems. 4 SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS Achievements - progress towards goals In 2016, the College celebrated the sesquicentenary of Josephite Education in Australia. Ongoing cyclical reviews contribute to improvement and development with the school. The College continues to make significant progress towards achieving identified goals across a range of priorities that emphasise enhanced teaching and learning - especially in the area of numeracy, commitment to the religious life of the school and commitment to providing an excellent learning environment with the completion of the current Master Plan. Future outlook Strategic plans for the future development of the College emphasise but are not limited to: - a whole school process inclusive of both literacy and numeracy; - ongoing commitment to the faith formation of our staff and students; - practices that ensure and safe and supportive learning environment - sustainability. Provision of student safety is at the heart of the policy as office staff make contact with parents by the first break each day if a student has not arrived at the College and there has been no notification. Our Pastoral team, led by the Assistant Principal - Student Welfare, follow up with parents where longer term absence or concerning patterns of non-attendance occur. The College Counsellor is available to work with parents and students to assist with engagement.
