2 Lesson Procedures Teacher Procedures Lesson Procedures: 1. Give the pretest for this lesson using the Assessment Procedures given on the next page. The teacher should rate the student s skill level subjectively using the 4-point rubric indicated. 2. Make the overhead transparencies and copies of all student worksheets listed in the Materials section on Page To begin the first class, display the Irregular Plurals Transparency on an overhead projector. Give each student a copy of the Irregular Plurals Reference Student Worksheet to keep as a resource. 4. Go over the definitions of nouns with the students. Explain the irregular nouns and collective nouns definitions. Use each word in a sentence orally to model for the students the correct use and pronunciation of the words. 5. Hand out the in Sentences Student Worksheet and Irregular Collective Nouns in Sentences Student Worksheet to the students. You should review what makes a complete sentence, a subject and a verb. Have them write complete sentences for the words provided on the worksheets. The words provided may be used as the subject or the object in the sentences. 6. The students may need additional class periods to complete these two worksheets. At the beginning of each class, review that a complete sentence includes a subject and a verb. Collect the worksheets for grading. 7. The Crossword Number One Student Worksheet provides great additional practice. The additional Crossword Number Two Student Worksheet is provided for more fun or can be given out at the same time so all students are not working on the same crossword puzzle. This will help to eliminate the sharing of answers so the teacher can tell if the students understand the work on their own. 8. The word searches are the extended activity for singular and plural collective nouns. Give each student a copy of the Singular and Plural Collective Noun Word Search and the Singular and Plural Collective Noun Word Search Clues to practice the spelling and usage of these nouns. 9. Administer the posttest using the Assessment Procedures given on the next page to determine the student s level of proficiency following the instruction of these skill(s). The teacher should rate the student s skill level subjectively using the 4-point rubric indicated. 2

Plural nouns name more than one person, place, thing, or idea. Some nouns are irregular or unusual in the way they become plural nouns. Some nouns change their spelling completely while some have the same form whether they are singular or plural. Another set of irregular nouns called collective nouns that mean groups of people or animals and can be either singular or plural depending on how they are used.
