3 Preface The learning of English is a rewarding and self-fulfilling experience for pupils. In the Power-Up English series, each pupil is given the opportunity to learn the English language at his own pace and in an interesting, enriching, and enjoyable way. The series uses the six Principles of English Language Teaching and Learning, which are adapted from the Singapore Ministry of Education s English Language Syllabus. These six principles are contextualization, learner-centeredness, learning-focused interaction, integration, process orientation, and spiral progression or CLLIPS. The textbook is organized into 16 units, and each unit develops a theme. A wide door of educational experience is open to the pupils in the varied lessons presented in the text. Essential academic and social skills are woven in encounters at home with family members, with neighbors and friends, with classmates, and people in the community. These lessons will enrich the pupils knowledge of the English language. The basic and essential skills of language learning are integrated with vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and literary appreciation and are systematically developed in a meaningful context. Logical thinking and reasoning skills are also developed hand in hand with other language skills. Opportunities to listen, read, and write English are made available throughout the lessons. The pupils are exposed to a variety of text types, such as riddles, poems, letters, and instructions. Colorful illustrations further motivate the pupils to learn. The pupils are exposed to grammar rules and language conventions to guide them in oral and written English. Short stories, poems, and letters are mediums through which listening, reading comprehension, and appreciation skills are developed. The overall objective of Power-Up English series is for pupils to be proficient in the functional aspects of the English language.
