7 To meet the demands of these new standards Middle school math classes first implemented these new expectations five years ago. The current eleventh graders (Class of 2018) are the first class to transition to the new curriculum & sequence.

All Students will be College & Career Ready in Mathematics Middle School Students who are behind in terms of College & Career Readiness will receive additional math support

9 All Students will be College & Career Ready in Mathematics Middle School Students who are behind in terms of College & Career Readiness will receive additional math support during the school day. High School Students who are behind in terms of College & Career Readiness may elect to take other courses, including completing Algebra 2 over two years.

11 How are students initially placed into the honors sequence? Standardized Test Scores M-STEP Iowa Test of Basic Skills Previous Math Performance Math Grades TOP % No Action Required by Parents Parents will receive a placement letter by April 30 notifying them of their child s math placement.

12 How are students accelerated beyond their grade level? Students already taking middle school level honors math courses will continue in their sequence. Calculus 3 and Linear Algebra are available for students who have completed both AP Calculus and AP Statistics.

13 How can current 5 th grade students be accelerated beyond their grade level? Students who are 2-3 grade levels ahead of their peers may take an achievement test to demonstrate proficiency in the mathematics content defined by the Common Core State Standards for Grade 6, Grade 7, and Grade 8. Applications will be available in the placement letter. The 90-minute test will be given in late May or early June.

14 High School Credit in Middle School Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, and Algebra 2 Honors taken in middle school will count towards high school GPA. Students will still take four math credits in high school.

16 What s next By April 30, you will receive a letter with your child s recommended placement for 6 th grade. This letter will include the middle and high school course sequence for your child.

17 What s next If your child is placed in Math 6/7 Honors, information on additional accelerated placement testing will be included. Students do not need to take this test to be placed in Math 6/7 Honors. A test is offered to students placed in honors if they feel that they have learned all of the 6 th grade and half of the 7 th grade content already. Those students can test out of Math 6/7.

18 Opportunities for moving to the Honors Path after 6 th grade: In the spring of 6 th grade students can take the Bridge test to test out of the 7 th grade content taught in Math 6/7 Summer Honors Academy- The Bridge class where students will have the opportunity to learn the 7 th grade content from Math 6/7 and then take the Bridge test to move to Math 7/8. Math 8 can be taken the summer before 8 th grade. Other opportunities in high school i.e. doubling up on classes SHA students must meet prerequisites to apply and attend and must meet course completion requirements. Enrollment is limited
