1 Concord Middle School Encore Descriptions Elective Course MYP Subject Area Grade Level Course Title 8 th 2D Art 7 th Sculpture/3D Art 7 th /8 th Graphic 7 th General Visual 8 th Ceramics 7 th /8 th Film Study 7 th /8 th Global Music Studies 7 th /8 th Drama 7 th /8 th Chorus: FYMO 7 th /8 th Advanced Chorus IB Electives Description Students will experiment with a variety of media and techniques to create two-dimensional (2-D) artworks. Students will learn and demonstrate skills through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and/or design. Students will explore a variety of 3-dimensional media. In sculpture students will focus on working with wire, newspaper, tape, sculpey, model magic, and paper-mache to create large and small pieces. Our subjects will range from pop culture, aliens, animals, monsters, historical figures, and fictional characters. This class is an introduction to the elements, principles, and techniques of graphic design. Students will create a variety of art using digital media. Students will explore the elements and principles of art. This class will allow students to explore the creative process with a wide range of materials including 2D and 3D media. This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay. Students will learn and apply skills of the ceramic process, beginning with pinching, coiling, and slab construction to more complex forms of clay. Students will study how imagery in film and media tells a story that crosses cultural boundaries to speak in a universal language. Students will understand the power of media as a tool for expression and investigation. Students will engage with existing and emerging music from the local community and around the world to understand the significance of music to the culture of the world and how the act of making music is a universal aspect of human expression. Students will participate in the study of movement, style, sets, props, dramatic interpretation and how all of these components contribute to a theatrically appealing production. For Young Men Only: Guys, this is for YOU and ONLY YOU!! Does your voice crack? Do you like to sing, but your voice doesn't sound like what you hear on the radio? Come join our "craka-lakin crew" as we learn some great songs together without the girls! We will sing a variety of music suited for the changing voice including Barber Shop Quartet and Back Street Boys' style. (A student accompanist - someone who plays piano - would be most welcome in this group!) Are you interested in singing competitively? Then his group is for you, young Miners! Girls and guys! At least one year of previous chorus experience required. This is for singers who are ready for a challenge! Can you read music and want to get better? Do you not read music, but would like to learn how to follow a score? Can you sing in harmony with your best friend or family, but would like to

Come on and hone your music making skills with others ready to win for the Miners! Is there a Troy Bolton in the house? Any High School Musical or other musical fans out there? Then this is your ticket! How about dancing? I know many of you out there are great at dancing, BUT how many of you would like to learn how to sing while you move? How about a singing and dance team? Wouldn't that be a dream! From Broadway to Hip-Hop style this will be a group to charge up the stage! If you like to sing, but have never taken a chorus class then this is good fit for you. We will sing all kinds of songs, some with written music, some without, some in English and, some in other languages. This group would prepare you for our competitive, Advanced Chorus. (A student accompanist - someone who plays piano - would be most welcome in this group, also!) for students who have played in a band class for at least one year and display a moderate level of development on any band instruments. Students study the beginning history of jazz, America's only true claimed art form. Students will learn about interpreting the style of jazz music and learning about how to improvise music outside of the written notation. For students who have played in a band class for at least one year and display a moderate level of development on Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, and Percussion instruments. Students hone and refine the skills they learned from the beginning class and get to develop on their instruments with more complex music and increased work in small groups within the large class setting. For students who have played in a band class for at least one year and display a moderate level of development on Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinets, Saxophones, and Percussion instruments. Students will participate in various forms of dance to express and communicate ideas and feelings. This class will encourage the exploration of dance in different times and different cultures. Students will also choreography, rehearse and perform their own work.

3 Design: Design: Design: 8 th Exploring Technology 8 th Personal Finance and Hospitality 7 th Exploring Apparel and Interior Design Design 7 th /8 th Journalism Design 7 th /8 th Multimedia Broadcasting Design 7 th /8 th Yearbook Design 7 th /8 th Media Studies Design 7 th /8 th Wellness in the Health and World Design 8 th Culture Shock IB Design Electives Students will have an opportunity to use a modular lab to explore several areas of technology, including Flight, Electricity, Applied Physics, Audio Broadcasting, Transportation, Manufacturing, Robotics and Computer-aided Drafting and Design as well as many others. All modules feature numerous hands-on activities and opportunities to learn science and math concepts in a new and exciting way. This course will focus on students learning the basics behind personal finance and resource management. Students will also be exposed to the basics of food service and hospitality. This course is geared towards understanding the factors that influence clothing choice, as well as, the basics behind interior design. Students learn how to conduct an interview, develop qualityquestioning techniques, and write in journalistic style. These skills are within specific topic writing areas of journalism: news, feature, sports, and editorial. Students will work on news writing including all methods and procedures required to write an authentic news story while implementing the IB Design Cycle to develop projects. Students in the course will create a video news program for the school each week. Techniques include filming, video capture, and editing to create the weekly segments. Students write and conduct interviews for the program. Students write and star in anchor segments to introduce the weekly broadcasts. Some after-school time may be required to film school events. It time to make memories! In this class, students develop abilities in collecting information, writing captions, understanding components of quality photography, copy editing skills, and techniques of headlines. Students begin to learn skills in technology applications and advertising. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in layout, design, and graphics. Students assume responsibility for planning and coverage of school events. Students recognize the impact of mass media messages through news, entertainment, and persuasion on contemporary society. Students prepare for their roles as informed and engaged citizens in a democracy while using the IB Design Cycle to develop projects and solve problems in the world. ARE YOU AN INQUIRER? This Health/PE Design Class will give you the opportunity to explore your own creativity and apply it to different Health and PE topics. Students will dive into all aspects of culture in the United States and the rest of the world. Join us to learn about different religions, foods,

Design 7 th Transportation Movement and (Semester) Design 7 th in Modern Society Industrialization (Semester) Design 7 th /8 th Exploring the World of Design 7 th /8 th MYP 1 7 th /8 th MYP 2 entertainment, traditions, government/politics, clothing, language, arts, and much more. This class will show that the best thing about humanity is our cultural differences. Do you want to own your own business some day? Do you want to be able to stand out from the crowd in an interview and snag that new job? If so, this class may help you get there! Students will learn about different aspects of business, economics and personal finance. We will research different careers and business leaders, develop a personal budget, create a business model, and work on skills needed to get a job (interview skills, presentation skills, etc.). Evolution of societies through movement. Starting with migration of peoples examine man s quest to move themselves and their culture from one place to another. Through this lens, examine the way societies move things, and how the interaction between cultures leads to development. Beginning with the age of industrialization, study the impact that industrialization has had on society, culture, and manufacturing worldwide. Examine the worldwide impact of trade of manufactured goods and the subsequent globalization of trade. Examine the consequences of trade deals and the predict the future of the global economy. Students will explore aspects of design throughout the world and the impact on society. We will participate in projects where students experiment with answers to problems in the world, design their own solutions, and exercise creativity and critical thinking in every component. IB Foreign Elective 8 th MYP 3 7 th /8 th Heritage This course is a high school level class and we will follow the Cabarrus County Schools World s Level 1 Curriculum. The emphasis of this course is placed on learning general grammatical constructions, cultural aspects, conversing in simple phrases, building a wide vocabulary, and becoming familiar with two tenses of the indicative mood. Reading, writing, listening and speaking will be the four areas that we are going to focusing during class. In order to receive high school credit for 1, students should pass the class with an average of 80% and scored 80% or above at the final test. MYP 2 is an extension of MYP 1 and increases the students reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students learn to ask and to answer simple questions concerning various aspects of daily life, and students are encouraged to appreciate Hispanic cultures. Successful completion of MYP 1 is a prerequisite to this course. This course builds upon the concepts taught in MYP 1 and MYP 2 and follows the high school curriculum for 2. Vocabulary is expanded and students are introduced to more complex grammar rules. Students participate in oral grammar drills and oral question and answer exercises. Appreciation for the Hispanic culture becomes more defined. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn 1 high school foreign language credit. Successful completion of MYP 1&2 is a prerequisite to this course. The intention of this course is to broaden the Native Speakers ability to comprehend text and develop reading

5 Chinese Chinese Chinese MYP 1 7 th /8 th Chinese MYP 1 8 th Chinese MYP 2 8 th Chinese MYP 3 and writing skills in. The students begin a more intensive study of the grammar and start to demonstrate proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The class will also provide students the opportunity to learn about the differences and similarities between Hispanic and American culture. This course will also be in conjunction with MYP 1 (please see MYP 1 description above). The goal is for our heritage students to develop their knowledge in grammar and to improve, maintain and enhance proficiency in reading and writing. Students will increase awareness and understanding in their own culture and make connections to other Hispanic cultures. Students will learn the fundamentals of speaking and writing Chinese and explore aspects of the Chinese culture. This course follows the same curriculum as high school Chinese I. In order to receive high school credit for Chinese I, students should pass the class with an average of 80% and scored 80% or above at the final test. Chinese MYP 2 is an extension of MYP 1 and teaches students to read and to write simple Chinese. Students learn to ask and to answer simple questions concerning various aspects of daily life and explore aspects of the Chinese culture. Successful completion of Chinese MYP 1 is a prerequisite to this course. Chinese MYP 3 teaches students to engage in more detailed conversations and interpret and present information about daily life. Vocabulary, sentence structure and characters are presented in more detail. Students continue to learn and appreciate aspects of different Chinese cultures. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn 1 high school world language credit. Successful completion of MYP 1 is a prerequisite to this course. Successful completion of Chinese MYP 1 is a prerequisite to this course. *7 th and 8 th Grade Students will be given the opportunity to choose from the above sections. IB Requires students to take year-long electives in Design, Art, and Foreign. All students will receive Health and PE on a semester long basis. Students and Parents are encouraged to choose their top four choices for next school year. Every effort will be made to accommodate this request; however, based on seating and availability this request may not be guaranteed. Also, due to student interest, all courses may not be offered.

6 Concord Middle School Encore Elective Course Descriptions 6 th Grade Course Offerings All 6 th grade students will be registered for the following classes: MYP Subject Area (Semester) Design: /Chinese Course Title 6 th Grade Visual Keyboarding and Basic Word Processing Intro to Foreign Description Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of art. Students will understand the historical, cultural and visual components of art. In this course, students will learn proper techniques for typing by touch. Students will explore the basics of Word Processing software and formatting of business documents. The intention of this course is to introduce students to foreign language learning and culture. The focus will be on comprehension, both written and spoken, vocabulary for basic conversation and the basic grammatical structure of simple sentences. Students will also be exposed to the geography of the /Chinese-speaking world. 6 th Grade Chorus Guess what... if you can talk, You Can Sing!! Join us as we "Make a Joyful Noise" together. We will learn singing games, patriotic songs, a few traditional choral pieces, songs in different languages and even some popular tunes! Come on along and sing! students will spend a semester learning about the instruments used in a band class, learning about the notation and symbols of music and how to read those symbols while translating those symbols into sound on one of the following 6 th Grade Band instruments; flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone. Students will be given a choice of one of the following courses to be taken opposite of their Visual class. *Based on seating and availability this request may not be guaranteed.
