2 School background School vision statement School context School planning process At Swansea Public School we have a growth mindset where everybody can connect, succeed and thrive. Swansea Public School, situated at the entrance of Lake Macquarie, is an innovative school promoting quality programs to the community. Our school has a strong focus on academic excellence and in addition provides a wide range of sporting and cultural opportunities for students. Students sit at the core of every action and decision. Our current enrolment of 240 students includes 40 Indigenous students and the school is currently supporting 11 students from language background other than English. The school FOEI (Family Occupation and Employment Index) is currently 131 and this determines our needs based funding. The school is organised into 9 classes, with 12 teaching staff, a school counsellor, 3 administrative and support positions, a 0.4 GA allocation and 5 additional school learning support staff. Swansea Public School also has an Instructional Leader through the Early Action for Success initiative. Our school is supported by a strong community of parents and we enjoy strong links with our extended community. Swansea Public School is an active member of the Galgabba Community of Schools which enriches the learning of all students across our community. Staff, parents and the community of Swansea have a strong commitment to improving the educational and social development of all students. Our community enjoys high levels of involvement in school life including a very active Parents and Citizens Association (P and C), a healthy Canteen, parent partnerships in sports and volunteers and mentors in classroom programs. Parents enrol their children at Swansea Public School because of a strong emphasis on positive recognition of students and its ability to deliver individualised programs that cater for specific needs. We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. This program is based on the core values of being respectful, being an active learner and being responsible and safe. These behaviour guidelines provide the foundation for success at Swansea Public School. The annual evaluation was led by the school principal and school executive staff. Key stakeholders included teaching and support staff, students, parents, the school s Parents and Citizens Association, the Minimbah Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), the school s Aboriginal Education Parent Committee (AEPC) and community groups. The school leadership team sought advice and consultation with the Principal, School Leadership (PSL) and the Director, Public Schools NSW. Tell them From Me and other surveys were conducted through the school newsletter. External Validation occurred in Term and formed an important part of the self assessment and planning process. Analysis of policies, programs, plans, budgets, meeting minutes, assessment information, communications, program evaluations and other documents as part of an audit trail providing information for the school s self evaluation team. Analysis of student NAPLAN data in Years 3 and 5 including detailed SMART analysis with a particular focus on trend data and growth from Years 3 to 5 for 2015 to Analysis of student achievement data including Best Start, L3K and L3S1 programs, Reading Recovery, reading text levels K 6, LAST data, PBL school wide evaluations, Quicksmart and class based assessment tasks. Key reforms also considered and contextualised included Great Teaching Inspired Learning, Local Schools, Local Decisions, Every School Every Student, Literacy and Numeracy Plans, the Performance and Development Framework and the School Excellence Framework. Improvement Measures Greater than 80% of students demonstrate individual growth in the targeted elements of the national Learning Progressions in Literacy and Numeracy. Greater than 90% of students demonstrate active engagement in learning against personal learning goals. Students Students build skills to develop challenging learning goals that support them to achieve expected growth and engagement in Students can articulate their learning goals and how to achieve them. Staff Staff use the learning progressions to track students achievement and differentiate learning for students. Staff use formative assessment and feedback to students to help students develop challenging learning goals. Leaders The school leadership team provide quality professional learning to ensure staff are able to effectively use data to inform teaching and Evidence Based Pedagogy Staff engage in Professional Learning to effectively implement evidence based pedagogy. All teachers develop teaching and learning programs that reflect deep understanding of student data. Learning and Support Learning and Support processes are streamlined and support differentiated learning for all students. Accountability and consistency is demonstrated in all classrooms and programs. Differentiation drives student growth for our high achieving students. Data Systems All staff track student progress to ensure one year of teaching equates to one year of learning progress. Practices All teachers use data to inform and differentiate their teaching and All teachers use formative assessment practices and feedback to students to support students to set challenging learning goals. All students set challenging learning goals and monitor their progress towards achieving them. Student Wellbeing programs address students at risk of disengaging from education. Products 100% of teaching and learning programs are data informed with personalised programs for individual students. All students have individual learning goals that are challenging, monitored, reviewed and reported on to parents. The school leadership team maintains a focus on instructional leadership to sustain a culture of effective evidence based teaching so that every student makes measureable progress every year. Systems exist to support students to develop and monitor learning goals and report to parents. All staff effectively use data to evaluate their impact on student Leaders The school leadership team adopts a coordinated approach to effective classroom practice where there is an expectation of improvement in student School leaders focus on building their capacity to deliver instructional leadership. Professional Learning Communities Professional Learning Communities are focused on continuous improvement of teaching and Data Skills and Use All teachers collaborate to develop skills to analyse, interpret and extrapolate and these skills are used to inform planning, identify interventions and modify teaching practices. Teachers collaborate to share data about student progress to inform the development of evidence based programs which meet the needs of all students. Instructional leadership builds capacity of all teachers to deliver innovative practice.
